IL-9 is a known T cell growth factor with pleiotropic immunological functions, especially in parasite infection and colitis. However, its role in tumor growth is controversial. In this study, we generated tumor clones expressing the membrane-bound form of IL-9 (MB-IL-9) and investigated their influences on immune system. MB-IL-9 tumor clones showed reduced tumorigenicity but shortened survival accompanied with severe body weight loss in mice. MB-IL-9 expression on tumor cells had no effect on cell proliferation or major histocompatibility complex class I expression in vitro. MB-IL-9 tumor clones were effective in amplifying CD4+ and CD8+ T cells and increasing cytotoxic activity against CT26 cells in vivo. We also observed a prominent reduction in body weights and survival period of mice injected intraperitoneally with MB-IL-9 clones compared with control groups. Ratios of IL-17 to interferon (IFN)-γ in serum level and tumor mass were higher in mice implanted with MB-IL-9 tumor clones than those observed in mice implanted with control cells. These results indicate that the ectopic expression of the MB-IL-9 on tumor cells exerts an immune-stimulatory effect with toxicity. To exploit its benefits as a tumor vaccine, a strategy to control the toxicity of MB-IL-9 tumor clones should be developed.
Effect of 3 - aminobenzamide on DNA Replication in CHO Cells Exposed to MMS
김영상,박상대 한국유전학회 1983 Genes & Genomics Vol.5 No.3
Effects of 3-aminobenzamide (3AB) on DNA replication was investigated in CHO cells treated with MMS by alkaline sucrose gradient sedimentation analysis. The inhibitor produced a dose-dependent decrease in the rate of DNA replication. The inhibitor did not seem to affect the specific step of DNA replication, but decreased the number of active replicon, which can accomplish DNA replication. Since 3-AB increased MMS-induced DNA strand breaks and significantly retarded the rejoining of strand breaks, we examined the possibility that single strand breaks enhanced by 3-AB may influence the pattern of DNA replication in the presence of MMS.

Recently, there have been many construction projects on soft ground with growth of industry and economy. Therefore foundation piles of abutments and(or) buildings had been suffering from a lot of stability problems of inordinary displacement due to lateral flow of soft ground. Although many researches about lateral flow have been carried out, it is still difficult to assess the mechanism of lateral flow in soft ground quantitatively. And reasonable design method for judgement of lateral flow occurrence in soft ground is not established yet. In this study, six PNN (Probabilistic Neural Network) models were developed according to input variables and database compiled from Korea and Japan for the judgment of lateral flow occurrence. PNN models were compared with present empirical methods. It was found that the developed PNN models can give more precise and reliable judgment of lateral flow occurrence than empirical methods.
The Impact of Korean University EFL Learners’ Reading Strategies and Motivations on Performance
김영상 팬코리아영어교육학회 2008 영어교육연구 Vol.20 No.4
This research examines the effect of motivation and reading strategies on EFL readers’ performance in a university setting. More specifically, the research draws upon the constructs of motivation and reading strategies, taken together, in order to test whether or not each category of the reading strategies functions as mediation between motivation and reading proficiency. Four subscales of motivation and three subscales of reading strategies were administered to the research participants (N=168). Data were drawn from EFL learners registered for EFL reading courses at a Korean university. Data collected were subject to stepwise regression analyses for the constructs at hand in an investigation of the magnitudes of prediction according to each of the subtypes of motivation and reading strategies. For motivation, the strength of motivation was found to be the most powerful influence on reading achievement. For reading strategies, global strategy turned out to be the prime determining factor in reading proficiency. When hierarchical regression analyses were performed in order to place each category of reading strategies under scrutiny in terms of mediation between motivational strength and reading achievement, only the category of global strategy served as a partial mediator between these two variables. The Sobel (1982) test further confirmed that global strategy does function as a mediating factor.
Credit Ratings and Short-term Debt Financing: An Empirical Analysis of Listed Firms in Korea
김영상,정병욱,황인덕 한국증권학회 2015 Asia-Pacific Journal of Financial Studies Vol.44 No.1
This paper investigates how credit ratings affect trade credit use in short-term debt financing. According to the empirical results, under information asymmetry in the debt market, credit rat-ings play a key role both as a screening device for the lender and as a signaling device for the bor-rower. That is, the credit rating system can mitigate the problem of information asymmetry toimprove efficiency in the allocation of funds in Korea’s short-term debt market. Noteworthy isthat, according to the empirical results, there is a nonlinear relationship between the level of creditratings and trade credit use. Among firms with low-ratings, an increase in credit ratings reducestrade credit use in Korea, whereas among those with high ratings, an increase in credit ratingsincreases trade credit use. Given that large firms have high credit ratings in Korea, the positiverelationship between the level of credit ratings and trade credit use suggests the possibility of pred-atory trade credit transactions. In addition, various characteristics of borrowing firms, such as size, financial distress, product characteristics, and industry characteristics, are key determinants oftrade credit use in short-term debt financing.
