Background: Recent studies report an association of decreased testosterone levels with type 2 diabetes mellitus, insulin resistance, hyperinsulinemia, dyslipidemia and metabolic syndrome. However, studies on correlations of testosterone with dyslipidemia, insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome in Koreans are scarce. We analyzed the relationship between levels of sex hormones and metabolic syndrome, lipid profiles and insulin resistance in Korean adult males. Methods: A total of 289 males were selected among the participants in a medical health check-up from June to July 2003 at Kangbuk Samsung Hospital Health Promotion Center. Metabolic syndrome was defined according to the Modified National Cholesterol Education Program-Adult Treatment Panel (NCEP-ATP) III. The serum total testosterone level was measured using a radioimmunoassay and sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) was measured using a radioimmunometric assay. Results: The prevalence of metabolic syndrome was 15.6% and the total testosterone level showed a significant correlation with the levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, fasting insulin, and uric acid even after adjustment for age and body mass index (BMI). Serum SHBG showed a significant correlation with diastolic blood pressure, uric acid, triglyceride, fasting insulin and insulin resistance indices. In logistic regression analysis in which age, drinking history, and smoking status were adjusted, decreased total testosterone and SHBG levels as well as increased estradiol levels showed significant correlations with an increased prevalence of metabolic syndrome. Conclusion: This study shows that decreased total testosterone and SHBG levels and an increased estradiol level were significantly correlated with increased metabolic syndrome prevalence and dyslipidemia in healthy Korean male adults. Further studies are suggested for the association of sex hormone replacement and the changes in the metabolic status. (Korean J Med 73:565-574, 2007)
조각난 경관에서 멸종위기종 붉은점모시나비의 서식지 패치 네트워크 분석과 보전

종에 대한 생태적 특성과 서식지에 대한 이해는 종의 보전에 매우 중요하다. 본 연구는 멸종위기에 처해있는 붉은점모시나비의 생태적 특성을 바탕으로 서식지 패치네트워크를 분석하였다. 그 결과 포획 개체수는 188개체, 재포획은 220회 되었다. 그리고 암수의 비율은 42:146개체로 암컷보다는 수컷이 약 4배 많은 것으로 나타났다. 또한 개체의 평균생존일수는 $3.93{\pm}3.93$일(수컷: $4.0{\pm}3.9$, 암컷: $2.5{\pm}1.0$), 암컷과 수컷의 최대 생존일수는 각각 13, 14일 나타났고, 수컷이 암컷에 비하여 오래 생존하는 개체가 많은 것으로 나타났다. 종의 평균이동거리는 377 m을 보였으며 최대 1550 m까지 이동하는 것으로 나타났다. 패치연결성과 개체생존이주율의 추정에서 패치간의 거리가 약 300 m 이내가 종의 이주에 적합하며 600 m 이상 떨어질 경우 개체생존이주율이 급격하게 감소하는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 종의 이주 빈도는 근접한 거리에서 다수의 패치가 있는 곳에서 활발하게 일어나고 있어 종의 보전을 위해서는 근접한 거리에 다수의 패치가 필요함을 알 수 있었다. 이번 연구 결과는 붉은점모시나비의 서식지 특성이 분석되어 종 보전을 위한 서식지 디자인 및 설계에 유용하게 사용될 수 있을 것으로 본다. Understanding the ecological complexity and habitat of a species are crucially important to conserve an endangered species. This study evaluated the patch network ecology of the endangered species $Parnassius$ $bremeri$. The results indicated that 188 individuals were captured and 220 were recaptured, respectively. The sex ratio of female: male was 42:146; males were four times more abundant than females. The average longevity of an adult was $3.93{\pm}3.93$ days (male, $4.0{\pm}3.9$; female, $2.5{\pm}1.0$ days); the maximum longevity was 14 days for males and 13 days for females, respectively. Therefore, the expected longevity of males was longer than that of females. The average emigration distance for the species was 377 m, and the maximum emigration distance was 1550 m. The analysis of patch connectivity and individual colonization revealed that the ideal distance between patches was about 300 m. Moreover, a >600 m patch distance decreased the colonization rate severely. We also observed higher immigration and emigration between patches that were clustered in close proximity. This leads us to conclude that a higher number of patches at a close distance is best suited for $P.bremeri$. We find these results to be crucial to determine a policy to protect and conserve this endangered species.

This paper attempts to discuss a set of Islamic dietary laws developed on the basis of the Qur’ānic injunctions. According to the laws, ḥalāl (lawful) food that Muslims are allowed to consume includes all vegetables, all seafoods, and all meat products that do not fall into the ten ḥarām (unlawful) categories: (1) the flesh of dead animals, (2) flowing or liquid blood, (3) the flesh of swine, (4) the flesh of an animal dedicated to any other than Allāh, (5) the flesh of animal strangled, (6) the flesh of animal beaten to death, (7) an animal that died after falling from a high place, or falling into a gully or ravine, (8) an animal which died after being gored by horns of another animal, (9) an animal partially devoured by wild animals and died as a result, and (10) the flesh of animal sacrificed to idols. Drinking alcohol is ḥarām and considered the mother of all evils, for it “excites enmity and hatred (Qur’ān 5:91). It is also worthy of note that animals slaughtered by the People of the Book are considered halāl. In conclusion, it can be said that Muslims ponder daily upon the will of Allah and the meaning of faith by eating ḥalāl foods and avoiding ḥarām foods.

This case report describes a successful orthodontic treatment with orthognathic surgery of a 17-year-old girl with skeletal Class III and unilateral cleft lip and alveolus on left side. The treatment included extraction of the maxillary premolars and asymmetric mandibular setback surgery. To induce regeneration of buccal alveolar bone on upper left lateral incisor, the palatal positioned left lateral incisor was aligned. After orthodontic treatment with orthognathic surgery, the patient had an improved facial profile, improved alveolar bone appearance on the cleft alveolus area, and favorable occlusion.

This paper focuses on a BOM(Bill of Materials) management problem for a small and medium manufacturing company that produce automobile parts. Automobile part's manufacturers produce various products due to various automobile characteristics such as types, colors, and the other options of car. These products are classified into product groups with common parts. And each product group is regarded as a product family. This paper proposes an efficient and effective EXCEL-based BOM management scheme using characteristics of the product family. And we have implemented the practical EXCEL-based BOM management system for real small and medium automobile part's manufacturing companies.

Subungual exostosis is a benign, acquired tumor of cartilaginous bone which occurs beneath the nail of the distal phalanx, and can often lead to displacement and deformity of the overlying nail. Complete surgical excision is a curative treatment for subungual exostosis. Since there have been no case reports of complete surgical removal of subungual exostosis in the Korean dermatologic literature, we report four cases of subungual exostosis that were successfully treated through complete excision or excision in combination with additional curettage.
