This study explores middle-class Korean immigrant mothers’ purposes and values reflected in their book selections in the U.S. Once a month for seven months, data about their book selections were collected from interviews, observation, and documents. The findings showed that these mothers preferred informational books as a way of overcoming minority status, and their book selections were restrained by their middle-class habitus. This study also revealed that the mothers used Korean or English books depending on their needs to teach Korean or American culture. On the basis of the findings, this paper suggests that it is necessary to understand the diverse educational purposes and values of immigrant parents and use multicultural literature in class to discuss race and social class issues that parents might emphasize less at home.

Objectives: To evaluate the perinatal outcome, prevalence and clinical significance of pregnancies with single umbilical artery. Study Designs: Fifty-five pregnant women who gave birth to neonates with single umbilcial artery were identified from January 1989 to August 1996. Data of pregnancy and perinatal outcome were reviewed. Associated malformations and other perinatal factors such as maternal age, gravidity, associated maternal disease, infant sex, birth weight, placental weight, etc., were analyzed. The associated malformations were classified into three types according to severity of involvement. Type A included all lethal or major malformations; Type B, nonlethal but unequivocal malformations; and Type C, borderline malformations. Results: Cases with single umbilical artery were found in 55 cases(0.38%) among 14,377 women who were delivered of neonates at our unit during the study period. Adverse perinatal outcomes including preterm delivery(<37 weeks, 38% ; 21/55), fetal growth retardation(33.7% ; 18/55), low 1 and 5 minutes Apgar score(52.7% ; 29/55, 40.0% ; 22/55), and perinatal death (45.5% ; 25/55) and the presence of other congenital anomalies(60% ; 33/55) were common. VATER/VACTERL association was found in 5 cases, and chromosomal anomaly was identified in 5 ; 3 of them were trisomy 18. Cases with single umbilical artery and other anomalies were at significantly higher risk for the occurrence of adverse outcomes including preterm delivery, low Apgar score and perinatal death than those without other anomalies(p<0.05 for each). Conclusion: Single umbilical artery is commonly associated with other congenital abnormalities of the neonates. Neonates with associated abnormalities are at higher risk for adverse perinatal outcome than those without other anomalies.

This study examines the values and support that four middle-class Korean mothers with different immigrant statuses in the U.S. have for their children’s language and literacy development as presented in Korean or English book selections. The findings show that all mothers wanted their children to develop the Korean language. However, depending on their immigrant statuses and experiences, the mothers have different values in regard to their children’s developing Korean language skills. These differing values influence providing Korean books for their children. All four mothers began to highly value that their children learn English as they started school and utilized their different types of capital to acquire the school-valued English books. This study sheds light on how immigrant parents can differ in their values and support for their children’s language and literacy development at home. It also highlights the importance of building home-school partnerships to maintain immigrant children’s heritage language and literacy development.
