This study was conducted to gather the basic data on the breeding of new variety for the lotus plants. We have crossed 6 kinds of the lotus plants with 10 cross combinations, and have also examined into the effect of cross combination on the seed formation rate, the characteristics of seeds and lotus pips. The rate of lotus pip with the seed bearing were over 80.0%. Number of seeds bearing per lotus pip were 11.0 in a cross combination to 2.5-7.5 in the others. Seed formation rate were 22.1-68.4% in all combinations except for one cross combination by 91.7%. Seed fresh weight were 172 g over 1.05 g. Lotus seeds could be formed in all cross combinations. Consequently, it was considered that cross combination were useful for the breeding of the high quality variety.
