Terrestrial insect herbivore communities of riparian zone in urban ecological river, Korea

This study was conducted on the association of terrestrial insect herbivore communities with flora andplant communities in the riparian zone of an urban river in Daejeon, Korea. The survey was conducted inMay, August, and October on three sites that are composed typical habitat diversity in the river. As aresult of the analysis, the highest matching rate of insect herbivore host plant and flora of the site wassite 1 with 93%. In addition, the dominant and subdominant species of the terrestrial insect herbivoresshowed a very close association with the dominant plant species that make up the plant community. As aresult of analysis of similarity among the sites, the most heterogeneous group of terrestrial insectherbivore communities were in May, which presumed to be affected by changes in biomass of host plantsbefore and after the rainy season. The results of this study can be used as data necessary for the conservationof biodiversity in riparian zone in the future.

광섬유 모재제조공정인 OVD와 VAD방식에서의 입자부착 증진을 위해서 외부에서 전기장을 가 해서 실리카입자를 대전시킨 뒤에 타겟으로 부착을 시키는 전기영동원리를 이용하는 방법을 소 개하였다. 실험에서는 디스크형 타겟을 사용하여 타겟 근방에서의 온도, 전기장분포를 측정하였고 입자부착실험을 수행했다. 그 결과 9cm 타겟에 -1.6kv가 가해\ulcorner을 때 전기영동으로 인한 부착률 증가는 열영동으로 인한 효과의 약 35%가 되었다.

Purpose: To review the management of posterior segment metallic intraocular foreign bodies (IOFB) and to compare the use of an external approach using a large electromagnet and an internal approach using vitrectomy and its tools for their removal. Methods: A retrospective review was performed on 49 eyes of 49 patients who underwent surgical removal of metallic IOFBs with either an internal or an external approach at a single institution between January 2003 and December 2006. We divided 49 eyes into two groups based on the type of approach: 26 external (n=26) and 23 internal (n=23). Visual acuity and the presence of any complications occurring with the two approaches were the main outcome measures studied. Results: Thirty of 49 eyes (61%) showed improvements in visual acuity. When we compared patients treated with an external versus an internal approach, we found no statistically significant difference in regard to visual outcome. Preoperative vitreous hemorrhage and endophthalmitis were more common in the internal approach group. A trend toward a higher rate of reoperation was more common in the external approach group, but they were not statistically significant. Postoperative complications found to be significantly different between the two groups were the rate of postoperative endophthalmitis and retinal detachment, which were more common in the external approach group. Conclusions: Surgical removal of metallic IOFBs results in significant visual improvement regardless of the approach method. The internal approach by vitrectomy is recommended as the first choice in preoperative conditions such as severe cataracts, vitreous hemorrhage and endophthalmitis, as well as in groups at high risk for postoperative endophalmitis and retinal detachment. 톨루엔 노출 근로자의 생물학적 노출지표로서의 요중 마뇨산, 톨루엔 및 오르토-크레졸 비교

This study was performed to compare the urinary hippuric acid, toluene and o-cresol as indices for biological exposure for workers exposed to toluene in air the statistical differences of various individual characteristics, the correlations between each biological exposure index and the concentration of individual exposure to toluene in air, and the statistical differences of the indices depending on sampling time points. The results of the study are as follows; 1. Factors such as age, BMI, benzoic acid containing foods, alcohol, smoking, drug, coffee did not affect the excretion of urinary hippuric acid, urinary toluene and urinary 0-cresol. 2. For urinary hippuric acid, the correlation with the individual exposure concentration to tolune in air was statistically significant (r=0.632, p<0.01) and the correlations for urinary toluence and o-cresol were r=0.035 and=0.114, respectively, thus the correlations were not statistically significant and low. Besides in cases lower than 10ppm, the correlation with the individual exposure concentration to tolune in air was statistically significant (r=0.447, p</0.01) but the correlation between the concentration of individual exposure to air-toluene and two biological monitoring indicies (urinary toluence and o-cresol) was not statistically significant. 3. Diffrence of biological exposure indecise in the begining and end of shift to indivisual exposure to toluene in air were statistically significant the urinary hippuric acid, toluene, and o-cresol in end of shift were higher than begining of work. However, in cases lower than 1ppm, diffrence of the urinary toluene and o-cresol were statistically in the begining and end of shift, but urinary hippuric acid was not. We concluded that, while the individual characteristics(e.g., age, body mass index, benzoic acid containing foods, alcohol, smoking, drug, coffee) did not affect the excretion of urinary hippuric acid, toluene and o-cresol. But the excretion change through the begining and end of shift have the statistical significance, so sampling time at the end of shift was vary important. Although the excretion of urinary hippuric acid showed significant correlation with the exposed toluene in air, urinary toluene and o-cresol wene recommended to be used as a subsidiary index in very low concentration of toluene in air.
