        Fast and opposite temperature responsivity in release behavior of cocontinuous hydrogel composites

        For practical implementation, numerous attempts have been made to improve the mechanical durabilityand response rate of temperature-responsive hydrogels. In this study, the introduction of a cocontinuousstructure with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), which successfully improved both the properties, wasfound to reverse the temperature dependence of release behavior. The cocontinuous composites ofpoly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAm) and PDMS were prepared via directional melt crystallizationand subsequent infiltration of PDMS. The compressive moduli of composites were more than 30 timeshigher than those of PNIPAm. Further, the existence of soft hydrophobic PDMS walls against thePNIPAm phases accelerated the deswelling process, and thus, it was more than 2,000 times faster thanthat of PNIPAm. The deswelling rate increased as the size of PDMS phases increased. The release rateaccelerated above the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) and slowed below the LCST, reversibly,thereby opposing the behavior of PNIPAm. Therefore, the fast volume shrinkage of PNIPAm phases confinedbetween PDMS phases is responsible for the unique release behavior of the composites, and not themolecular diffusion processes through hydrogel mesh structures. Collectively, these findings highlight aversatile tool for engineering the release behavior of smart drug carriers based on temperatureresponsivehydrogels.

        Stem Cell In Adult Pancreas: Its Activation and Induction of Beta Cell Differentiation

        Stem cells in adult pancreas and their specific marker are poorly characterized. We hypothesized that pancreatic stemcells could evolve from the duct system in response to neogenic stimulation. Following partial pancreatectomy (Px), wefound extensive formation of ductules consisting of nestin-positive epithelial cells with higher replicating ability in theneogenic foci after Px. The neogenic ductules were isolated for the culture of nestin-positive duct cells. These nestinpositiveduct cells were numerous and displayed extensive self-replication in the duct cell explants, thus depicted asnestin-positive duct stem (NPDS) cells. Endocrine cells, mostly insulin cells were present in the explants at day 2 assingle cells or as small clusters adjacent to the NPDS cells, and formed islet-like masses at day 3 of culture, implyingislet cell differentiation from NPDS cells. We found transient up-regulation of PDX-1 expression by RT-PCR at day 3after Px in pancreatic tissue. We investigated the effect of clusterin overexpression on differentiation of insulin betacells from duct cells We found that the number of insulin producing cells increased 11.5 fold when clusterin was overexpressed.Insulin expression, both insulin mRNA and peptide levels, was increased in clusterin cDNA transfectedcells.In conclusion, we suggest that NPDS cells could be generated from adult pancreas by neogenic motivations and theymay differentiate into insulin-secreting-cells, and clusterin could stimulate not only differentiation of precursor cells inthe pancreatic duct, but also proliferation of predifferentiated beta cells. Those differentiated beta cells are functionalcells secreting insulin in response to glucose stimulation.

        데이터 기반 항공기 지상 이동 시간 예측 알고리즘 개발

        Departure Manager (DMAN) is a tool to optimize the departure sequence and to suggestappropriate take-off time and off-block time of each departure aircraft to the air trafficcontrollers. To that end, Variable Taxi Time (VTT), which is time duration of the aircraftfrom the stand to the runway, should be estimated. In this paper, a study for developmentof VTT prediction algorithm based on machine learning techniques is presented. The factorsaffecting aircraft taxi speeds were identified through the analysis of historical traffic data onthe airport surface. The prediction model suggested in this study consists of severalsub-models that reflect different types of surface maneuvers based on the analysis result. The prediction performance of the proposed method was evaluated using the actualoperational data.

        외국의 방사성동위원소 사용시설 방사성유출물관리 차등 규제기준비교·분석 및 국내 적용방안

        In Korea, current regulatory standards for radioactive effluent from radioisotope (RI)handling facility still needs to adopt a graded approach per the magnitude of radioactive material andthe likelihood of potential radiological impact. Also, a dose constraint for radioactive effluent has notbeen applied to the RI handling facility in Korea. To overcome the limitations and propose application toKorean regulations, this study comparatively analyzed regulatory standards of selected countries (UnitedStates, Germany, Finland, Sweden, and United Kingdom), reflecting the graded approach. All thosecountries have a single dose constraint (0.01 to 0.3 mSv y-1) as a small fraction of dose limits and apply itto the RI handling facility, which uses unsealed sources. Also, radioactivity concentration limits or totalradioactivity limits are derived from those constraints. In the United Kingdom (UK), the graded approachfor dose assessment is adopted with the optimization threshold (0.02 mSv y-1). With this threshold, the UKregulatory institute provides dose assessment methodology with conservative assumptions for screeningpurposes or methodology with relatively realistic assumptions for detail assessment. Based on thepractices of the selected countries, this study suggests establishing a dose constraint for the RI handlingfacilities to apply the graded approach in Korean regulatory standards. Also, the relevant regulatoryprocess should not place an undue burden on licensees. In line with this, the regulatory institute mightconsider providing a simple dose assessment tool for screening purposes or applicable discharge limitsin terms of total radioactivity or radioactivity concentration to help the licensees comply with the doseconstraints more easily. This study is expected to be used as the basic research to enhance the gradedapproach in Korean regulations on radioactive effluent control of the RI handling facility.

        동해 울릉분지의 탄산칼슘 포화상태

        동해 울릉분지의 탄산칼슘 포화상태를 1999, 2014, 2017, 2018년도 해양 조사를 통해 수집된 pH, 용존무기탄소(DIC), 총알칼리도(TA) 자료를 이용하여 계산하였다. 1999년에 비해 2010년대에 전 수심에서 탄산염 포화상태는 유의하게 감소하였다. 2018년 현재 방해석과 선석의 포화면 수심은 각각 약 500 m와 200 m로 상승하였다. 탄산칼슘 포화상태를 결정하는 주된 화학종인 탄산이온은 상층과 심층에서 다른 분포를 보였다: 상층에서는 약 $175{\mu}mol\;kg^{-1}$로 비교적 높고, 심층에서는 $50{\mu}mol\;kg^{-1}$ 이하로 아주 낮게 나타났다. 그러나 탄산이온 농도의 감소 경향은 심층보다 상층에서 두드러졌는데, 이는 2000년대에 대기에서 이산화탄소의 침투가 주로 상층에서 일어나는 것이 반영된 결과로 해석된다. The calcium carbonate saturation state in the Ulleung Basin of East Sea was calculated using bottle data set of pH, dissolved inorganic carbon and total alkalinity obtained from the year 1999, 2014, 2017, and 2018 cruise. In the 2010s calcium carbonate saturation state was significantly lowered at all depth compared to the 1999 reference state. Accordingly calcite saturation horizon and aragonite saturation horizon shoaled to 500 m and 200 m, respectively. A key chemical species for the calcium carbonate saturation state, carbonate ion showed distinctive profile between upper and deep waters: it is moderately high (${\sim}175{\mu}mol\;kg^{-1}$) in upper waters and very low (< ${\sim}50{\mu}mol\;kg^{-1}$) in the deep waters. However the decreasing trend of carbonate ion concentration was pronounced in the upper water than deep waters, suggesting atmospheric $CO_2$ penetration is largely confined to the upper waters in the 2000s.

        방문동기의 만족 영향관계에서 관여도 조절효과* -애완곤충경진대회 사례-

        The study aims to identify the moderating effects of involvement on satisfaction, recommendation, and revisit intention in insect exhibition. Tourism motivation and involvement are crucial factors influencing visitors satisfaction. Particularly, the study aim to examine the moderating effects on tourism involvement between tourism motivation and visitors’ satisfaction. Data were collected from 346 usable questionnaires among visitors of the pet insect competition. Results of a factor analysis yielded three dimensions of tourism motivation which are insect experience/learning, recreation/escape, and social and friendship. Hierarchical regression analysis indicates that insect experience/learning motivation and recreation/escape motivation influence visitors’ satisfaction, Results also show that visitors’ involvement has moderating effects on satisfaction. It was suggested that visitors’ motivation and involvement be considered in insect exhibition and events.

        편의점 판매 김밥의 단백질과 무기질 함량을 중심으로 한 영양 적정성 평가

        This study examined the nutritional information using the nutrition labels of gimbap sold at convenience stores and evaluated nutritional adequacy compared to dietary reference intakes for Korean adolescents. Thirty gimbaps (triangular gimbaps and regular gimbaps according to the main ingredients of vegetables, fish, and meat) were purchased at five convenience stores of different brands with many stores in Korea. The food and nutrition labels of the gimbaps were investigated, and nine minerals were analyzed using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The average price of gimbap was 1,906.7 won, and average energy was 292.0 kcal, and the protein content was 15.5% of the recommended intake for Korean male adolescents aged 15~18 years. The mineral content ranged from 6.9% for zinc to 39.0% for selenium. Except for sodium and selenium, the energy, protein, and mineral content did not meet 1/3 of dietary reference intakes for adolescents. For the index of nutritional quality (INQ), calcium and zinc were the lowest in the triangular and regular gimbap, respectively. The INQ of potassium was significantly higher in triangular gimbap with vegetables. The content and INQ of selenium were in regular gimbap with fish, and the zinc INQ was in regular gimbap with meat. Overall, gimbap sold in convenience stores has a high sodium content, and the contents of energy, protein, and minerals, except selenium, are insufficient for a single meal.
