If herbal medicine has not stored properly during its manufacturing, processing and distributing processes, it was changed in quality or deterioration from high possibility of microbial growth and contaminant ultimately bring about the reduced quality in herbal medicine. This study was attempted to establish an organized system for storage standards by 1) monitoring microbial contamination (total bacteria, total fungi, E. coli, salmonella, P. aeruginosa, S. aureus) of distributed materials from herbal medicine (10 species, 50 samples) 2) analyzing the quality variation of the main component and microbial contamination by storage factors (temperature, packing materials, periods) 3) quality monitoring of distributed materials (2 species, 50 samples) according to storage periodsl l year, 2 year, 3 year). The changes of loss on drying contents, component assay by HPLC method, and microbial contamination test were measured during storage. The levels of microbial contamination in the 50 samples herbal medicines were investigated by using selective media of total bacteria, total fungi, E. coli, salmonella, P. aeruginosa, S. aureus, in accordance with testing method of Korea Pharmacopoeia 8th edition. As a result, the microbial contamination of 50 items were showed that total fungi count on Atractylodis Rhizornatd items) showed as high measured by WHO's microbial contamination limit standard. Among the total 50 herbal medicines, 12 presumptively E. coli were isolated and identified as E. colic). strain), coliform bacteria(11 strains). 21 presumptively S. aureus were isolated and identified but it was not detected. whereas presumptively salmonella and P. aeruginosa were not detected at all samples. Quality changes by storage conditions were showed that the remarkable content change of poncirin, magnolol, honokiol was founded after 12 month stored whreas change of cinnamic acid, berberine were appeared uniformly.
Tenderization of Bovine Longissimus Dorsi Muscle using Aqueous Extract from Sarcodon aspratus

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of aqueous extract from Sarcodon aspratus on tenderization of the bovine longissimus dorsi muscles in comparison with commercial proteolytic enzymes. Furthermore, meat quality and muscle protein degradation were examined. We marinated meat with 2% Sarcodon aspratus extract, 2% kiwi extract, and 0.2% papain. Beef chunks (3×3×3 cm³) were marinated with distilled water (control), Sarcodon aspratus extract (T1), kiwi extract (T2) or papain (T3) for 48 h at 4℃. There were no significant differences in muscle pH and lightness between control and treated samples. T1 had the lowest redness (p<0.01), and higher cooking loss and water holding capacity than control and T2 (p<0.05). T1 and T3 exhibited lower shear force values than control (p<0.05). Total protein solubility did not differ significantly between T1 and control, but T1 had less myofibrillar protein solubility than control and T2 (p<0.001). The degradation of myosin heavy chain in T1 and T3 was observed. This degradation of myofibrillar protein suggests that Sarcodon aspratus extract could influence tenderization. These results show that aqueous extract of Sarcodon aspratus extract actively affect the tenderness of the bovine longissimus dorsi muscle.
Electrical Investigation of LIGA-Processed Gas Electron Multipliers

Gas electron multipliers (GEMs), which have square-shaped micro-holes, have been realized by using a deep-etch X-ray lithographic technique or LIGA process. In order to understand the operation of such a gas avalanche microdetector, we have performed electric field simulations by using three-dimensional finite-element methods. The most important electrical characteristic, the gas avalanche gain, of the LIGA-processed GEM has been measured with regards to two-different charge-collection geometries, open and closed GEM geometries. The measurement results for the gas avalanche gain over a wide range of thicknesses are presented. Other electrical characteristics, such as the pulse-height spectra and the time stability, are also presented.

Inonotus obliquus(Pers.:Fr.) Pil. is a white rot fungus that belongs to the family Hymenochaetaceae of Ba-sidiomycetes. Extracts and fractions of this fungus have been known to have biological activities, including antimutagenic,anticancer, antioxidative, and immunostimulating effects. Recently, there have been reports that the anti-inflammatory and an-tinociceptive properties of the methanol extract of I. obliquusmay be due to the inhibition of inducible nitric oxide (NO) syn-thase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) expression via the down-regulation of nuclear factor .B (NF-.B) binding ac-tivity. However, the effects of I. obliquusmediator production have not yet been elucidated. In the present study, a 70% ethanol extract of I. obliquus(IOE70) showedantioxidative effects. We also tested the ability of the I. obliquusextract to inhibit the inflammatory cascades in lipopolysac-charide (LPS)-induced RAW 264.7 macrophage cells. The NO inhibition of IOE70 was better than that of other ethanol ex-tracts from I. obliquus. To investigate the mechanism by which IOE 70 inhibits NO production and iNOS and COX-2 ex-pression, we examined the activations of I.B., Akt, and c-Jun NH2-terminal kinase (JNK) in LPS-activated macrophages.IOE70 markedly inhibited the phosphorylation of I.B.macrophages. Taken together, these experiments demonstrated that IOE70 inhibition of LPS-induced expression of iNOS andCOX-2 protein is mediated by Akt and JNK. Based on our findings, the most likely mechanism that can account for this bi-ological effect of IOE70 involves the inhibition of NF-.B through the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/Akt/I.B pathway and theinhibition of JNK activation. Thus, IOE70 might have useful clinical applications in the management of inflammatory dis-eases and may also be useful as a medicinal food.

Rehmanniae Radix Preparata attributes good blood circulation and it has been used for the treatment of dizziness, men's sterility, excessive loss of blood and weakness. On the quality control of commercial Rehmanniae Radix Preparata, quantitative determination of 5-hydroxymethyl (5-HMF) using HPLC method has been conducted. Quantitative analysis of S-hydroxymethyl-2-furaldehyde (5-HMF) in commercial Rehmanniae Radix Preparata showed average of $0.136{\pm}0.057%$ in 14 samples collected throughout the regions of Korea.
Electrical Properties of Ag Schottky Contacts to Hydrothermally-grown Polar and Nonpolar Bulk ZnO

The electrical properties of Ag Schottky contacts to hydrothermally-grown polar (Zn- and Opolar)and nonpolar (m-plane) bulk ZnO were investigated. Ohmic-like behavior for Zn-polar ZnO and rectifying behaviors for O-polar and m-plane ZnO were observed from current-voltage (I-V )measurements. Schottky contacts to O-polar ZnO were found to have higher barrier heights and lower ideality factors than those to m-plane ZnO. Higher series resistances were found for both the Zn-polar and the m-plane ZnO compared to the O-polar ZnO probably due to the presence of the interfacial layer and interface states. The homogeneous barrier heights obtained from linear fitting to the effective barrier height vs. ideality factor plots were similar to those obtained from capacitance-voltage (C-V ) measurements. A higher degree of oxidation at the Ag-ZnO interface might occur for O-polar ZnO than for m-plane ZnO, increasing the barrier heights. The large dispersion in the capacitance for m-plane ZnO was related to the excess capacitance due to the interface states.
