Vol.10 No.-

The Scarlet Letter is in a sense the last of Nathaniel Hawthorne's tales and of course their climax. The novel presents a very clear and perfect image of Hawthorne as a speculative philosopher and an ethical thinker. In this thesis a study was made on the characteristic of the thought and the theme reflected in the Scarlet Letter. The characteristic of the thought is the duality of puritanism and romanticism. The main current of the thought is in the tension between the puritan and the romantic tendencies. The hero, Arthur Dimmesdale, symbolizes puritanism, and the heroine, Heater Prynne, romanticism. While Hawthorne leans in puritanism by Dimmesdale, he is skeptical and critical ,about the heartlessness, intolerance and severity of puritanism by Hester. The theme of the novel is the moral isolation due to guilt-consciousness. Moral isolation causes the destruction of inner sphere of reality, which means the quiet and pure communion of a human mind and heart with others in love and charity. The severity of puritanism drove both Hostel and Dimmesdale into a state of moral insanity. The essence of moral isolations of Hester and Dimmesdale differs in that Hestel's sin was revealed, but Dimmesdale's, concealed. So Dimmesdale is much more serious in the moral agony than Hester. They are left stranded in the midst of a terrible solitude which, to Hawthorne's thinking, is the negation of reality. The real emancipation from the moral isolation, which means the release from the power of sim, should result in the salvation of soul. Unless there is true repentance, salvation is unattainable. To the last Hester has no repentance, but Dimmedale's conclusive confessio nleads to his salvation.
