The present study has been undertaken to elucidate whether glutathione S-transferase (GST) is related to cross-adaptive response to DNA-protein crosslink (DPC) induced by ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS) or ultraviolet radiation (UV)-C in Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells. DPC was determined by SDS-K^+ precipitation method, and GST was measured by western blot analysis. 2,4-Dinitrophenol (DNP) that depletes cellular ATP and cycloheximide (CHM) that inhibits protein synthesis were used to find whether DNP and CHM affected the expression level of GST and cross-adaptive response to EMS or UV. There is a cross-adaptive response to DPC in cells pretreated with EMS or UV and subsequently treated with UV or EMS, respectively. In cells pretreated with 2 mM EMS and subsequently treated with 5J/㎡ UV, DNP and CHM did not affect cross-adaptive response to DPC and GST. And also, in cells pretreated with 1J/㎡ UV and subsequently treated with 8 mM EMS, CHM did not affect crass-adaptive response to DPC and the expression level of GST. But DNP increased the amount of DPC, and decreased the expression level of GST in UV-pretreated cells. These results suggest that GST are involved in the induction of cross-adaptive response to DPC in CHO cells.

This paper presents an improved admission policy of 2000 academical year so that more promising students apply for the University. By analyzing the past admission data and the questioned report, a unique admission policy has been suggested as the University feature reflected. One of the major differences compared from the admission policy of the last year is that the entry number limit for the special admission is in creased or newly established such as the entry allocated for recommended students, perfectly attending students, and regionally apportioned students. Also established is the special admission for those licensed students and late educated students.
Clinical Comparison for Colon Polyps between Right and Left Colon in Koreans

Background/Aims: Comparative studies of colon polyps between right and left colon in Korean population are limited. We investigated the clinical characteristics of the patients according to polyp location and compared the results of the morphological and histological analysis of right and left colon polyps. Methods: The study was performed prospectively for the patients who underwent colon polypectomy for health check-ups in a single tertiary center. The patients were classified into three groups by the location of the polyps: right group (from the cecum to the splenic flexure), left group (from the descending colon to the anus), and total group. The size, the morphology, the location and the pathology of the polyps were evaluated. Results: From June 2010 to June 2011, Overall 2596 polyps from 950 patients (male=646) were analyzed. Colon polyps were right side-shift with increased patients age (P<0.001). The incidence of polyps was most common in sigmoid colon (26.5%). Polyps less than 5 mm size were more common in left colon (P<0.001) and flat polyps larger than 1 cm in right colon (P=0.006), respectively. In histopathological findings, the distribution of advanced adenoma was not different according to the location, however tubular adenomas and serrated adenomas (P<0.001) were more common in right colon. Female was more distributed in right group, respectively (P<0.001). Conclusions: In a single center study, colon polyps were more distributed in right colon with age and in females. Also flat polyps larger than 1cm, tubular adenoma and serrated adenoma were found in larger proportion in right colon. (Intest Res 2012;10:372-378)

Liposarcoma accounts for at least 20% of all soft tissue sarcoma in adults and occur anywhere in the body, although about 14% of cases arise from retroperitoneum. Liposarcoma usually presents as a painless, enlarging mass that can slowly grow over many years. We here report a case of retroperitoneal liposarcoma in a 52 years old female patient undergoing continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis. Retroperitoneal liposarcoma was incidentally found by computed tomography which was performed due to ventral hernia and confirmed by ultrasonography guided-biopsy. She was treated successfully by wide surgical resection and transferred to hemodialysis.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P> <I>Ishige foliacea</I>, a species of edible brown algae, contains specific polyphenols called phlorotannins, which have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer properties. We hypothesized that the phlorotannin-rich fraction of <I>I. foliacea</I> (PRFI) is neuroprotective. We investigated the effects of PRFI on scopolamine-induced memory impairment in mice. PRFI (50 or 100 mg/kg) supplementation for 6 weeks improved scopolamine-induced memory impairment symptoms in the Morris water maze and passive avoidance tests. PRFI reduced acetylcholinesterase activity in the brain and significantly decreased lipid peroxidation levels, but increased glutathione levels and superoxide dismutase activity. Additionally, PRFI up-regulated the expression levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and tropomyosin receptor kinase B, and phosphorylated extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) and cyclic AMP-response element-binding protein (CREB), which are involved in neuroplasticity in the cerebral cortex and hippocampus. Our results suggest that PRFI prevents scopolamine-induced memory impairment, possibly through oxidative scavenging and ERK-CREB-BDNF pathway regulation.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> PRFI improved scopolamine-induced memory impairment in mice. </LI> <LI> PRFI decreased AChE activity and restored scopolamine-induced oxidative stress. </LI> <LI> PRFI activated the ERK-BDNF-CREB signalling pathway. </LI> <LI> PRFI is a potent agent for the treatment of memory impairment-related diseases. </LI> </UL> </P>

자동차 비배기계 미세먼지는 브레이크 및 타이어 마모에 의해 주로 발생되는 것으로 알려져 있다. 배기계 미세먼지와 달리 도로상에서 타이어 마모에 의해 발생되는 미세먼지는 대기중 농도가 낮으며, 성분분석을 위한 추적 물질의 부재 등으로 인하여 정확한 분석이 매우 어려운 실정이다. 본 연구에서는 타이어 마모와 미세먼지 발생량의 연관성을 분석하기 위하여, 각기 다른 배합조건으로 타이어 시료를 준비하고, 강제적으로 마모하여 이때 발생되는 미세먼지의 함량과 경향을 분석하였다. It is known that particular matter from the vehicle’s non-exhaust emission is mainly generated by wear of brakes and tires. Unlike particular matters from exhaust system, the one generated by tire wear on the road is very difficult to accurately analyze due to the absence of traces and low concentration in the atmosphere. In this study, in order to analyze the relationship between tire wear and the amount of particular matters generated, samples were prepared with various recipes and under different mixing conditions. Generated particular matters by abrading tires or specimens were analyzed by aerodynamic particle sizer.
