The Multidimensional Masculinity in Nguyễn Huy Thiệp’s Short Stories

Nguyễn Huy Thiệp is a pillar in Vietnamese cultural life after the Second Indochina War, and the fates of men and women at the beginning of Đổi mới (Renovation) is one of the prominent themes in his short stories. To show off sexual power, seek glory, and maintain his dominant position, Thiệp’s heroes engage in a game of oppressing the weak, hunting animals, and harassing women. However, due to the complex changes in social life, moral values, and gender inequality, men in the postwar period quickly experienced the feeling of humiliation, impotence, and failure. In turn, the sophisticated aspects of masculinity demonstrate the cultural and ethical concerns of contemporary Vietnamese society. By exploring the multidimensional nature of masculinity expressed in Thiệp’s stories, this study aims to resolve misconceptions about gender and the relationship between men and women in his work.

<P>Five new tirucallane saponins, paramignyosides A-E (1-5), were isolated from the water fraction of the Paramignya scandens stem and leaves. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic evidence including high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HR-ESI-MS) and one dimensional (1D)- and 2D-NMR. The effects of isolated compounds on pro-inflammatory cytokines were evaluated by measuring the production of interleukin (IL)-12 p40, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated bone marrow-derived dendritic cells (BMDCs). Paramignyoside C (3) exhibited selective and potent inhibitory effect (IC50=5.030.19??M) on the production of IL-12 p40 comparable to that of the positive control, SB203580 (IC50=5.000.16??M). Further studies are required to confirm efficacy in vivo and the mechanism of anti-inflammatory effects.</P>
High-Resolution Simulations for Vietnam - Methodology and Evaluation of Current Climate

To assist the government of Vietnam in its efforts to better understand the impacts of climate change and prioritise its adaptation measures, dynamically downscaled climate change projections were produced across Vietnam. Two Regional Climate Models (RCMs) were used: CSIRO’s variable-resolution Conformal-Cubic Atmospheric Model (CCAM) and the limited-area model Regional Climate Model system version 4.2 (RegCM4.2). First, global CCAM simulations were completed using bias- and variance-corrected sea surface temperatures as well as sea ice concentrations from six Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) global climate models. This approach is different from other downscaling approaches as it does not use any atmospheric fields from the GCMs. The global CCAM simulations were then further downscaled to 10 km using CCAM and to 20 km using RegCM4.2. Evaluations of temperature and precipitation for the current climate (1980-2000) were completed using station data as well as various gridded observational datasets. The RCMs were able to reproduce reasonably well most of the important characteristics of observed spatial patterns and annual cycles of temperature. Average and minimum temperatures were well simulated (biases generally less than 1oC), while maximum temperatures had biases of around 1oC. For precipitation, although the RCMs captured the annual cycle, RegCM4.2 was too dry in Oct.-Nov. (−60% bias), while CCAM was too wet in Dec.- Mar. (130% bias). Both models were too dry in summer and too wet in winter (especially in northern Vietnam). The ability of the ensemble simulations to capture current climate increases confidence in the simulations of future climate.

In this study, the stochastic finite element solution is given to obtain the response variability in the natural frequency of Functionally Graded Material (FGM) beam due to uncertain structural parameters. Among others, the elastic modulus and mass density are chosen to have randomness along the beam axis direction, which are modeled as one-dimensional homogeneous stochastic processes. The stochastic analysis of the FGM beam is performed in conjunction with Monte Carlo simulation (MCS). Random samples of random parameters are generated based on the spectral representation method. The response variability in the natural frequency of FGM beam, due not only to the single random parameter of elastic modulus or mass density but also to both of the random parameters taken into account at the same time is investigated. The effect of respective random parameters on the response variability of natural frequency and the effect of correlation between the two random parameters as well are discussed in detail.
Magnetic Resonance WPT System Using a Planar Receiver for Mobile Applications

In this study, a wireless power transfer (WPT) system including three coils and working at 6.78 MHz is investigated. By employing a 2 x 3 metamaterial (MTM) array, the efficiency of the proposed WPT system is significantly enhanced. Experiments show that with the MTM array, a maximum efficiency improvement of 27 % is achieved at transfer distance of 35 cm. The impact of ground plane on the transfer efficiency is also studied. Several methods to reduce this impact are discussed and measured.

<P>This paper presents a magnetic resonance wireless power transfer (WPT) system that uses three coils, a planar receiver and operates at 6.78 MHz,. Effective power transfer is ensured by establishing an impedance matching condition for this WPT system. A metamaterial (MTM) array having dimensions of 20 cm X 30 cm is also positioned near the load coil to concentrate the magnetic field and enhance the transfer efficiency. The result is a maximal improvement of 27% in the transfer efficiency at a transfer distance of 50 cm. The impact of a ground plane on the transfer efficiency is also examined. By utilizing the MTM array, making slits on the ground plane and increasing the gap between the ground plane and the load coil, it is possible to mitigate this impact. The highest transfer efficiency improvement is about 55% at a distance of 20 cm with the ground plane. A practical laptop model is fabricated to verify the impact of the load coil angle and position on the transfer efficiency. The result shows that the maximum transfer efficiency with the laptop model is 47.58% with the load coil angle of 90 degree.</P>
Magnetoresistance Effect in La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 Thin Films Fabricated by Using Pulsed Laser Deposition

La0:7Sr0.₃MnO₃ thin films were fabricated onto (100) n-Si substrates by using pulsed laser deposition (PLD). The thickness of the lms was controlled from 30 nm to 100 nm by varying deposition time. The deposited lms were then annealed at 600℃ for 5 h. Room-temperature X-ray patterns verifed that the lms had a La0:7Sr0:3MnO3 single phase as did the target. The crystalline orientation of the lms was in uenced by the lms thickness. Thinner lms were more oriented in the (104) direction. The Magnetoresistance (MR) measured at 300 K for all the lms exhibited a pure DE behavior that depended on the films thickness. A nonlinear eld dependence of the magnetoresistance was observed in the temperature region far below TC. This obtained result could not be explained by the DE mechanism. Fitting experimental data to the spin polarized tunneling model, we attributed the dominated low-field MR below TC to spin polarized tunneling between grain boundaries.
