The lack of consideration for statistical properties in Taguchi's threelevel linear graphs is rectified. We propose a new set of linear graphs for the threelevel orthogonal arrays according to the maximum resolution criterion. In the presence of twofactor interactions however, the serious bias of all the estimated effects as well as the estimated variance shows that these designs should not be employed. The various alternative designs are discussed.

<P>The first ever demonstration of a cable‐type lithium ion battery architecture with outstanding omni‐directional flexibility is described by Je Young Kim, Heon‐Cheol Shin, and co‐workers on page 5192. The Front Cover image illustrates the unique battery architecture comprising a skeleton frame surrounding an empty space, that is, a hollow‐spiral anode with a multi‐helical structure. This design enables the battery to reliably power an LED screen or an MP3 player even under severe mechanical twisting and bending. </P>

The technological effects of Makgeolli lees fiber (0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, and 4.0%) on chicken salt-soluble breast meat proteins in a model system on proximate composition, physicochemical properties, and textural properties were investigated. Makgeolli lees fiber was obtained from Makgeolli brew processing, and the by-products showed good dietary fiber. The moisture and ash contents, water holding capacity, redness, yellowness, hardness, and apparent viscosity of chicken salt-soluble meat protein heat-induced gel systems with Makgeolli lees fiber were all higher than the control without Makgeolli lees fiber. However, protein solubility and electrophoretic patterns did not differ among the control and treatments with Makgeolli lees fiber samples. The chicken salt-soluble protein heat-induced gel systems incorporating Makgeolli lees fiber had improved water holding capacity, textural properties, and viscosity due to Makgeolli lees fiber addition. These results suggest that the addition of 4.0% Makgeolli lees fiber to gel is helpful to improve the physical properties of heat-induced gels.

Characterization of Bimetallic Fe-Ru Oxide Nanoparticles Prepared by Liquid-Phase Plasma Method

<P>The bimetallic Fe-Ru oxide nanoparticles were synthesized in the liquid-phase plasma (LPP) method which employed iron chloride and ruthenium chloride as precursors. The active species (OH·, H<SUB>α</SUB>, H<SUB>β</SUB>, and O<SUP>I</SUP>) and the iron and ruthenium ions were observed in the plasma field created by the LPP process. The spherical-shaped bimetallic Fe-Ru oxide nanoparticles were synthesized by the LPP reaction, and the size of the particles was growing along with the progression of the LPP reaction. The synthesized bimetallic Fe-Ru oxide nanoparticles were comprised of Fe<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB>, Fe<SUB>3</SUB>O<SUB>4</SUB>, RuO, and RuO<SUB>2</SUB>. Ruthenium had a higher reduction potential than iron and resulted in higher ruthenium composition in the synthesized bimetallic nanoparticles. The control of the molar ratio of the precursors in the reactant solution was found to be employed as a means to control the composition of the elements in bimetallic nanoparticles.</P>

The objective is to develop the complex coating technique with high quality and homogeneity of coating for spherical parts with diameter of 2 ~ 4 mm and stable mass production shall be secured with consideration of coating material, process and jig design. Silicon oxide-diamond like carbon (SiO-DLC) complex coating chemistry is expected to enhance the high temperature stability as opposed to DLC. Currently, the spherical part is first welded and then assembled with other parts, finally they are coated with DLC. However in this manner, the maximum charging in one coating batch is limited due to the very big size of the whole component which increases cost. Therefore the spherical part is to be coated before welding. Overall, reactive sputtering with high precision fixturing and masking technique resulted in the best overall properties for modern powertrain fuel system. The jig design was optimized with consideration of coating properties (height, width, thickness, inserting distance) and spherical parts were fixed at the jig with magnet plate. Coating material and process were determined with several trials. In conclusion the PVD+PACVD coated parts is developed and coatings with high quality, homogeneity and 30,000 inserting amount are secured. Coated parts are minimum 100 % more durable than non-coated parts.
