Changes in certain fish behaviors are known to be very sensitive indicators of sublethal exposure to environmental contaminants. Therefore, behavioral toxicity tests, if properly designed, can be very useful to assess the influence of hazardous chemicals on fish. However, quantitative analysis of xenobiotic -mediated changes in locomotor behavior in fishes are rare, due mainly to the methodological difficulties. In general, fish movement has been known to be hypertrophic or hypotrophic according to the chemicals. As a study of fish behavioral toxicities, we quatified the swimming movement of Orydas latipes using computer-automated video tracking system. Oryzias latipes was exposed to cadmium of 128 mg/L for 1 hour in a limited aquaria, then the total swimming distance, the average swimming velocity, the histogram of turning angles, and the turning frequency were analyzed. Fish treated with cadmium showed decreased swimming activities, decreased velocity, and decreased turning frequency, which means hypotrophic activity. From these results, the computer-automated video tracking system of this study seems to be a good tool for the evaluation of the potential ecotoxicological studies.
PCR을 이용한 국내 및 수입 축산물 유래 Listeria monocytogenes의 유전학적 분석연구

One hundred-fifty two of Listeria strains were isolated from domestic chicken carcasses, a slaughter-houses from nationwide from 1996 to 1997 and imported livestock products from a ten foreign countries including the USA, China, France and Thailand. To substitute the laborious and time consuming procedures of clinical laboratory standard diagnostic methods, the rapid and specific multiplex PCR(M-PCR), which was designed to amplify a three kinds of genes simultaneously f3r specific detection and differentiation of L. monocytogenes(LM) by one step procedure, was established. The LM strains confirmed with M-PCR were analysed to their genetic diversities by RAPD using the two primers(D87 & MMTl), and also evaluated on their discriminatory abilities(na) between two primers. our study also conducted the REP-PCR and ERIC-PCR for evaluation of the possibility of REP and ERIC elements for genetic subtyping of LM strains. According to the REP-PCR and ERIC-PCR fingerprinting patterns, LM strains were divided into 7(ERIC-type) and 4(REP-type) major clusters at the relative clone cut off value of 80%. According to the computer analysis of PCR results using the GelCompar Ⅱ software, ERIC-PCR(DI=0.955) had expressed the most high discriminatory ability and followed by REP-PCR(DI=0.952), RAPD(D87; 0.954, MMT1; 0.937), in order. The combined analysis of the present PCR results was also expressed the reliable and useful discriminatory ability(DI=0.916). This study suggested that PCR based methods could be used as an reliable, reproducible, rapid, and highly discriminatory method for the genetic differentiation of genus Listeria.
[논문]결정화 유리첨가에 의한 BNT 계 세라믹 복합체의 소결 및 유전특성

본 연구에서는 BaO-Nd2O3-TiO2계 마이크로파 유전체 세라믹스에 결정화 유리를 첨가하여 적충일체형 RF 수동소자 모률 구현을 위한 저온소결 유전체소재를 개발하고자 하였다. BaO-Nd2O3-TiO2에 결정화 유리를 5~3Owt% 범위로 첨가하여 소결온도를 1300°C 에서 1050 °C 로 낮추었으며, 첨가량의 증가에 따라서 소결밀도의 증가 및 입성장이 뚜렸이 일어났고 결정화 유리를 20wt% 첨가하여 1050 °C의 소결온도에서 95% 이상의 상대밀도를 갖는 소결체를 얻을 수 있었다. 이때 유전율(Er),72,품질계수(Q . f),1500, 공진주파수 온도계수(tf), 22 ppm/°C 을 나타내었으며 이는 LTCC 재료로서 응용가능성이 있다고 판단되었다.
Durability Properties of High Volume Mineral Admixture Cement Composite

<P> Cement is used to make cement composite, produces a large amount of CO<SUB>2</SUB> (870 kg/ton) during manufacturing. Hence, an approach to effectively reduce CO<SUB>2</SUB> emissions in the concrete industry is to reduce the amount of cement by increasing the amount of a mineral admixture such as blast furnace slag powder or fly ash. Here, we optimized the high volume mineral admixture binder composition by investigating the strength properties of a cement mortar made using binders with various admixtures and inorganic stimulus agents. We used a cement composite mix with a water/binder ratio of 26 % or 46 % to evaluate the compressive strength and durability of the cement composite with increasing amounts of admixture. The cement composite mixture with an inorganic stimulus agent showed outstanding chloride penetration resistance over all curing times and a durability factor of 90 % or more to freezing and thawing. A higher carbonation resistance was found when increasing the curing time for the high volume mineral admixture compositions with an inorganic stimulus agent added due to faster curing, resulting in a dense inner concrete structure. Consequently, when using an inorganic stimulus agent with a sufficiently long curing period, high volumes of the admixture can be used to produce concrete with suitable properties for various applications. </P>

Scrub typhus is a zoonotic disease, caused by Orientia tsutsugamushi, and characterized by a typical primary lesion(eschar), rash and non-specific symptoms such as fever and chills, headache, myalgia. Although it is an acute febrile illness, severe complications of this disease are very rare since the introduction of specific antibiotic therapy. The authors report two cases of scrub typhus complicating acute respiratory distress syndrome. Although appropriate diagnosis and treatment were performed, all two patients expired. They were diagnosed as scrub typhus by travel history, clinical manifestations, eschars, serologic test and polymerase chain reaction(PCR).(Korean J Med 59:544-549, 2000)
