        THE FRACTURE CHARACTERISTICS OF GLASS FIBER POST AND CORE ON USING DIFFERENT TYPES OF CORE RESIN MATERIALS

        Statement of problem. Glass fiber post is one of recent developments to accommodate esthetic restoration for endodontically treated teeth. This has many advantages over conventional post system in physical properties, esthetic factor, risk of root and restoration fracture, adhesion to core, radiopacity, removal and retrievabilty, biocompatibility and chemical stability. Purpose. This in vitro study was to evaluate the most suitable type of resin core for the glass fiber post through surveying the fracture modes and the maximum load that fractures the tooth. Material and methods. 50 sound maxillary premolars restored with glass fiber posts($ParaPost^{(R)}$ Fiber White) and different types of resin cores(ParaCore, $Z100^{TM}$, $Rebilda^{(R)}$ and $Admira^{(R)}$) were prepared and loaded to faiure in a universal test machine. The maximum fracture load and fracture mode were investigated in the specimens that were restored with resin and those of metal cast and core. With the data, Wilcoxon rank sum test was used to validate the significance between the test groups, and Tukey' s studentized range test was used to check if there is any significant statistical difference between each test group. Every analysis was approved with 95% reliance. Results. On measuring the maximum fracture load of teeth specimens, there was a significant difference between the maximum fracture loads of the tooth specimens. ParaCore showed the highest mean maximum fracture load followed by $Z100^{TM}$. And, the distribution of fracture mode of tooth specimens showed generally Type D, the three parted fracture of the core around the post was mostly seen(62.5%), and specifically, ParaCore showed 90% and $Z100^{TM}$ showed 100% Type D fracture. Conclusion. Referring to the values of maximum fracture load and mean compressive fracture load, ParaCore and $Z100^{TM}$ had high values and are recommended as tooth colored resin core material for glass fiber post. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS. This study was carried out intending to be of aid in selecting the appropriate resin core for the glass fiber post. The dual cure type composite resin ParaCore and light cure type composite resin $Z100^{TM}$ have good properties and are recommended as tooth colored resin core material for glass fiber post.

        Changes in autonomic nervous system activity after treatment with alpha-blocker in men with lower urinary tract symptoms

        <P><B>Purpose</B></P><P>To determine changes in autonomic nervous system activity after treatment in men with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), we evaluated changes in patients' symptoms, uroflowmetry, and heart rate variability (HRV) after treatment with alpha-blockers for 12 weeks.</P><P><B>Materials and Methods</B></P><P>Ninety-five men who had LUTS (International Prostate Symptom Score [IPSS] ≥8) were included in this study. We divided them into two groups on the basis of a low frequency/high frequency (LF/HF) ratio of 1.6. After treatment with Xatral XL (Handok Inc., Korea) 10 mg for 3 months, we rechecked their IPSS, uroflowmetry, HRV and compared these with the baseline measurements.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>Fifty-four men were assigned to the low LF/HF group (group A: LF/HF ≤1.6) and 41 men to the high LF/HF group (group B: LF/HF >1.6). At baseline and 12 weeks, none of the parameters differed significantly between the groups except for HF, which is one of the parameters of HRV. IPSS, the IPSS-voiding subscore, and the IPSS-storage subscore decreased and maximal uroflow increased significantly after 12 weeks of treatment. Whereas the baseline LF/HF ratio increased from 0.89±0.407 to 1.80±1.804 after treatment in group A, it decreased from 3.93±5.471 to 1.79±1.153 in group B.</P><P><B>Conclusions</B></P><P>The efficacies of Xatral XL were clear in both groups. We found that the LF/HF ratio in the two groups merged to a value of approximately 1.79 after treatment. We suggest that this could be a clue to the importance of balance in autonomic nervous system activity in men with LUTS.</P>

        Decreased <i>DBC1</i> Expression Is Associated With Poor Prognosis in Patients With Non-Muscle-Invasive Bladder Cancer

        <P><B>Purpose</B></P><P>The deleted in bladder cancer 1 (<I>DBC1</I>) gene is located within chromosome 9 (9q32-33), a chromosomal region that frequently shows loss of heterozygosity in bladder cancer (BC). It is suspected that it acts as a tumor suppressor gene, but its prognostic value remains unclear. The aim of the present study was to investigate the value of <I>DBC1</I> as a prognostic marker in BC.</P><P><B>Materials and Methods</B></P><P>The expression of <I>DBC1</I> was determined by real-time polymerase chain reaction analysis in 344 patients with BC (220 non-muscle-invasive BC [NMIBC] and 124 muscle-invasive BC [MIBC]) and in 34 patients with normal bladder mucosa. The results were compared with clinicopathologic parameters, and the prognostic value of <I>DBC1</I> was evaluated by Kaplan-Meier analysis and a multivariate Cox regression model.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P><I>DBC1</I> expression was significantly decreased in patients with MIBC compared with those diagnosed with NMIBC (p=0.010). Patients with aggressive tumor characteristics had lower <I>DBC1</I> expression levels in NMIBC (each, p<0.05). By multivariate Cox regression analysis, low <I>DBC1</I> expression was a predictor of progression to MIBC (hazard ratio, 7.104; p=0.013). Kaplan-Meier estimates revealed a significant difference in tumor recurrence, progression to MIBC, and cancer-specific survival depending on the level of <I>DBC1</I> expression in NMIBC (log-rank test, each, p<0.05).</P><P><B>Conclusions</B></P><P>The expression of <I>DBC1</I> was associated with tumor aggressiveness, progression to MIBC, and survival in NMIBC. Our results suggest that <I>DBC1</I> expression can be a useful prognostic marker for patients with NMIBC.</P>

        SQL2 적합성 시험도구의 설계 및 구현

        DBMS 기능시험은 DBMS마다 그 기능이 상이하므로 DBMS 인터페이스격인 SQL의 적합성 시험을 통한 방법이 일반적이다. SQL 적합성 시험도구는 DBMS SQL 구현의 정확성을 시험함으로써 DBMS 기능시험을 목적으로 한다. 본 논문에서는 기능 시험도구로서 SQL 적합성 시험도구인 설계 및 구현에 대해 기술한다. 시험항목들은 완전성, 독립성, 자체 평가성, 명확성, 확장성, 편리성을 가지도록 설계 및 구현되었으며 SQL 표준안(SQL2)의 완전수준을 시험범위로 하였다. 개발된 시험도구는 660개 이상의 개별 시험항목을 제공하며, 바다 Ⅱ DBMS의 기능 시험용으로 구현되었으나 타 DBMS의 SQL2의 적합성 시험에도 이용할 수 있다. Due to different functionalities supported by various DBMS systems, it is quite difficult to define a standard functionality test for DBMS. For this reason, conformance to the industry standard interface language SQL is generally used as a basis to verifying the functionality of a DBMS. The objective of such a testing tool is to verify semantics and syntax of an SQL implementation of DBMS. In this paper, we present the design and implementation of an SQL conformance testing tool for relational DBMSs. The test is designed for ISO SQL2 Full Level and each test item has been generated with the criteria of independence, self-evaluation, clarity, extensibility and convenience. The testing tool offers over 660 individual test items and has been developed primarily for the BADA Ⅱ DBMS, although it can also serve as an SQL2 conformance test for other DBMS.

        An Integrated Circuit for Biphasic Pulse Generator with Variable Parameters

        A biphasic pulse generator integrated circuit (IC) was designed, and the parameters of the generated pulses such as pulse rate, duration, and amplitude were adjusted to the desired values by using the time-varying differences of two inputs of the operational amplifier integrated on the IC. The chip was fabricated with the MagnaChip /SK Hynix CMOS 0.35 ㎛ process, which allowed a maximum pulse amplitude of 3.3 V. In addition, it included a transformer that allowed the IC to rectify the amplitude modulated (AM) input with a 1 ㎓ carrier and provide the supply voltage to generate the pulses. The whole size of the full system was 441.5 ㎛×527.8 ㎛, and the system successfully generates biphasic pulses up to 1.2 ㎑ using the RF signal. This circuit can be used to generate biphasic pulses with variable parameters for distributed neural interfaces, and to provide scan voltages for potentiostat applications such as in the Fast Scan Cyclic Voltammetry (FSCV). In addition, this IC with an integrated transformer suggests that a wireless electroanalytical system on a chip can be achieved as a future work.

        모성 심 질환이 동반된 임신의 임상양상

        목적 : 전체 임신의 약 1%를 차지하고 있는 모성 심 질환이 동반된 임신의 결과에 대해 알아보기 위함이다. 연구 방법 : 1994년부터 2001년까지 최소한 임신 20주 이후에 분만하였으며 모성 심 질환이 동반된 산모의 의무기록을 고찰하였다. 결과 : 심장질환을 동반한 산모는 총 195명으로 224예의 분만이 있었다. 224예의 임신 중 류마티스성 심질환군이 117예 (52.2%), 선천성 심 질환군이 96예 (42.9%)에 해당하였으며, 나머지는 11예로 부정맥, 심근병증, 승모판막 탈출 증후군 등이었다. 임신과 관련된 모성사망은 2예 (0.9%)가 있었으며, 대부분의 산모 (91.9%)가 분만 전, 분만 중, 분만 후의 뉴욕 심장협회 운동기능 평가상 class I, Ⅱ에 해당하였다. 태아의 평균 재태 기간과 출생시의 평균체중은 37.9주와 2883 gm 이었다. 주산기 사망률이 17.9/1000이며, 선천성 기형은 6예로 전체의 2.7%를 차지하였으며, 선천성 심기형의 재발률은 2.1%였다. 결론 : 모성 합병증 및 조산, 저 체중아의 대부분이 뉴욕 심장협회 운동기능 평가상 class Ⅲ, Ⅳ 심 질환 산모군에서 발생하였다. 산모의 운동기능상태 평가가 산모 및 태아의 예후에 중요한 인자라 할 수 있다. Objective : To assess the pregnancy outcomes complicated by maternal heart diseases. Methods : From 1994 to 2001, medical records of pregnant women who had reached at least 20 weeks of gestation with maternal heart diseases were reviewed. Results : 224 deliveries of 195 women were enrolled in this study. In 117 (52.2%) cases the heart diseases were of rheumatic origin, in 96 (42.9%) cases congenital, and the remaining 11 (4.9%) cases were miscellaneous group that included arrhythmia, cardiomyopathy, and mitral valve prolapse. There were 2 (0.9%) cases of maternal death related to pregnancy. Majority (91.9%) were in New York Heart Association functional classes I, Ⅱ before, during, and after delivery. Mean gestational age at birth and birth weight were 37.9 weeks and 2883 gm. Perinatal mortality rate was 17.9/1000 and the rate of congenital malformation was 2.7%. Recurrence risk of neonatal congenital heart disease was 2.1%. Conclusion : Most complications were developed in the pregnancies complicated by maternal heart diseases with New York Heart Association functional classes Ⅲ, Ⅳ. Functional status of the pregnant women is the important risk factor in maternal and fetal outcomes.

        Effect of Ginseng Saponins on Enhanced Dopaminergic Transmission and Locomotor Hyperactivity Induced by Nicotine

        Several studies have shown that behavioral hyperactivity induced by psychomotor stimulants is prevented by ginseng saponins. In an attempt to investigate whether the effect of ginseng saponins is through their inhibitory action on the enhanced dopaminergic transmission by psychomotor stimulants, we examined the effects of ginseng total saponin (GTS) presynaptically on nicotine-induced dopamine (DA) release in the striatum of freely moving rats using in vivo microdialysis technique and postsynaptically on the in vitro and in vivo binding of [<SUP>3</SUP>H]raclopride to DA D<SUB>2</SUB> receptors. Also, we examined the effects of GTS on nicotine-induced locomotor hyperactivity and on nicotine-induced Fos protein expression in the nucleus accumbens and striatum. Systemic pretreatment with GTS (100 and 400 mg/kg, intraperitoneally (i.p.)) resulted in a dose-dependent inhibition of locomotor hyperactivity induced by nicotine. GTS decreased nicotine-induced DA release in the striatum in a dose-dependent manner. However, GTS had no effects on resting levels of locomotor activity and extracellular DA in the striatum. GTS inhibited the in vitro binding of [<SUP>3</SUP>H]raclopride to rat striatal membranes with an IC<SUB>50</SUB> of 5.14±1.09 μM. High doses of GTS (400 and 800 mg/kg, i.p.) resulted in decreases in the in vivo binding of [<SUP>3</SUP>H]raclopride in the striatum. GTS decreased nicotine-induced Fos protein expression in the nucleus accumbens and striatum, reflecting the inhibition by GTS of nicotine-induced enhancement of dopaminergic transmission. The results of the present study suggest that GTS acts not only on dopaminergic neurons directly or indirectly to prevent nicotine-induced DA release but also postsynaptically by binding to DA D<SUB>2</SUB> receptors. This may explain the blocking effect of GTS on behavioral activation induced by nicotine and conceivably by other psychostimulants. Our data raise the possibility that GTS, by attenuating nicotine-induced enhancement of dopaminergic transmission, may prove to be a useful therapeutic agent for nicotine addiction and warrant further investigation on its effect on nicotine's rewarding property.Neuropsychopharmacology (2006) 31, 1714–1721. doi:10.1038/sj.npp.1300945; published online 26 October 2005
