Poly (cyclohexylenedimethylene terephthalate) (PCT) is a high performance, semi-crystalline thermoplastic polyester produced by polycondensation of cyclohexane dimethanol and terephthalic acid. PCT was developed in 2007 as a new material to replace polycarbonate (PC) as bisphenol A was detected in food containers manufactured by PC and safety issues were raised. PCT materials are manufactured into various plastic articles such as baby bottles, water bottles due to its excellent transparency, durability and heat resistance. In this study, migrate substances from baby bottles and storage containers to food were selected and analyzed using GC-MS/MS. 7 validation parameters including linearity were performed for method validation, and as a result, the correlation coefficient (r2) was 0.996 or higher, LOD was 0.54 to 15.83 ug/L, and LOQ was in the range of 1.65 to 47.97 ug/L. The results of analysis of 100 baby bottles and storage containers under real use conditions will be used for safety management of food utensils, containers and packaging.

Abstract

A pilot-scale calcium sodium phosphate (CNP) plant was designed and manufactured to examine the performance of recently developed stabilization/solidification (S/S) technology. Hg-contaminated wastes samples generated via various industrial processes in Korea, including municipal, industrial, and medical waste incineration, wastewater treatment, and lime production, were collected and treated using the pilot-scale CNP plant. S/S samples were fabricated according to various operating conditions, including waste type, the dose of the stabilization reagent (Na2S), and the waste loading ratio. Although the performances (Hg leaching value and compressive strength) were reduced as the waste loading ratio increased, most of the S/S samples exhibited Hg leaching values that were below the universal treatment standard limit of 25μgL−1 and compressive strengths that exceeded the criterion of 3.45MPa.

Highlights

The Hg leaching from the field-collected waste samples were investigated.

A calcium sodium phosphate process is proposed to treat Hg-contaminated wastes.

A pilot-scale treatment plant was designed and manufactured using the CNP process.

The waste samples were successfully treated using the pilot-scale treatment plant.

Purpose: Varicose veins are a major problem worldwide and improvement in quality of life (QoL) is the ultimate goal after treatment of this benign disease. However QoL is highly dependent on personal and social factors. This study compares high ligation and stripping (HS) and radiofrequency ablation (RFA) in terms of QoL and recurrence in Korea. Methods: A retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data between August 2006 and October 2008 was performed for patients undergoing HS and RFA at a single institution. QoL was assessed with a questionnaire preoperatively, at 3 months postoperatively and annually thereafter. Recurrence was assessed by Duplex ultrasound annually after surgery. Results: A total of 272 patients completed the questionnaire at 3 months. Among these patients, 155 patients returned for their annual follow-up. There were no significant differences between HS and RFA in global QoL scores, although RFA showed less pain. However, paresthesia rates were also higher after RFA. Recurrence rates were similar between the two modalities, although technical failures were more common after RFA. Conclusion: Overall QoL and recurrence rates were similar between the two modalities. The benefits of RFA do not seem to be enough to overcome the higher costs of HS in Korea.

Phytophthora capsici, which causes diseases in solanaceous crops, secretes necrosis and ethylene-inducing peptide 1-like proteins (NLPs) that induce plant defense responses and leaf necrosis. In this study, we used RNA interference (RNAi) technique, a proven strategy for crop protection and gene regulation in plants, to suppress P. capsici infection through the inhibition of PcNLPs. In the RNAi mechanism, Dicer processes double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) into smaller entities known as small interfering RNAs (siRNAs). These siRNAs subsequently integrate into the RNA-induced silencing complex to form sequence-specific base pairing with complementary regions of the target mRNA. This interaction effectively initiates the degradation process of the target mRNA. We designed and synthesized dsRNAs targeting the “AIMY” and “GHRHDWE” conserved motifs of PcNLP gene family, which are predicted to be key elements for the expression of NLPs and pathogen infection. After infiltration of dsRNAs targeting the motifs and inoculation with P. capsici, we confirmed a significant suppression of P. capsici infection and downregulation of the PcNLP gene family. These findings imply that the dsRNA-mediated RNAi technique holds potential for mitigating a wide range of pathogens, while simultaneously suppressing the expression of a particular gene family using dsRNA targeting functional conserved motifs in the gene family.

Leuconostoc mesenteroides is a commercially important lactic acid bacterium currently used as a starter for kimchi and kefir. However, its sensitivity to acid stress limits its performance. L. mesenteroides was grown in a medium supplemented with 3.2 or 6.4 mM glutathione (GSH), and cell survival rates were measured during a long-term mild acid challenge (pH 4.0). As a result, GSH was imported by the cells and protected against acid stress; thereafter it was consumed as a nutrient. Acid stress resistance of starter cultures of this bacterium can thus be improved by cultivating it in media supplemented with GSH.
