      • Factors associated with inflammatory change of epidermal cyst

        Background: Epidermal cysts (EC) are the most common tumors found on the skin and accompanying inflammation is also frequent. However, the predictors for inflammatory change have not been investigated yet. Objectives: This study was performed to investigate the difference between inflamed and uninflamed epidermal cysts, and to assess associated factors for inflammatory change. Methods: We analyzed the biopsy-proven 1723 epidermal cysts (515 inflamed and 1208 uninflamed) at two tertiary hospitals from 2011 to 2021. Results: The proportion of inflamed epidermal cysts (IEC) and uninflamed epidermal cyst (UIEC) were 29.9 % and 70.1 %, respectively. Inflammatory change was less frequently observed on the face (25.5 %) than the other sites (32.1 %) (p=0.0046). The anatomic location with the highest rate of inflammatory change was back (40.8 %, p=0.0004). Mean duration of inflammatory change from UIEC to IEC on the face was shorter than the other sites (12.5 months vs 17.9 months, respectively, p= 0.0473). On ultrasonography, long axis of IEC (20.7mm) was generally longer than that of UIEC (15.7mm) (p=0.0218). Moreover, Inflammatory change was more frequent on the EC with punctum compared to those without punctum (35.3 % vs 30.3 %, P=0.0471). Conclusion: Based on the location, size and presence of punctum, decision on the optimal treatment strategies can be established when encountering patients with EC.

        Derivation and verification of an aerosol dynamics expression for the below-cloud scavenging process using the moment method

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>An aerosol dynamics equation for the below-cloud scavenging process considering phoretic and electric charging effects in addition to the conventional mechanisms (the Brownian diffusion, interception, and impaction) is developed by using the moment method. Then, the dynamics of particle size distribution by the below-cloud scavenging process is calculated by using the developed equation and verified with the measurement data. The calculated particle size distribution changes are quite small compared to the measured changes. The calculated removal rate is smaller by 10<SUP>−2</SUP>–10<SUP>−3</SUP> than the measured data when only the conventional mechanisms are considered. With the extended mechanisms, the scavenging coefficient increases upto 20 times, mainly for the particle size range of 0.1μm<<I>d<SUB>p</SUB></I><3.0μm. However, the difference between the calculated and measured scavenging coefficient is still large, especially, for <I>d<SUB>p</SUB></I><0.1μm. Other possible scavenging mechanisms that might affect the below-cloud scavenging process such as coagulation and condensational growth of hygroscopic particles, turbulence, and updraft into cloud are discussed. It is recommended that further studies on wet scavenging process are needed.</P>

      • Fatigue analysis of floating wind turbine support structure applying modified stress transfer function by artificial neural network

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The frequency-domain approach has been studied as a potential replacement modality for the time-domain method in fatigue analysis of offshore wind turbine structures. It is assumed that in the frequency-domain approach, the stress response spectra induced by wind and wave loads can be expressed by a stress transfer function. To obtain the stress transfer function, coupled analysis should be performed in advance. However, since the response of a wind turbine to different average wind speeds is non-linear, the stress transfer function is bound to change with wind speed. This means that repeated simulation is needed in order to calculate the stress transfer function according to wind speed change. The problem, though, is that if the number of simulations is large, prohibitively high computational and time costs probably will be incurred. In this study, to reduce the number of simulations and, at the same time, increase the accuracy of results, a correction factor of the stress transfer function induced by wind load was artificial-neural-network-approximated as a function of mean wind speed and frequency. Sensitivity analysis was conducted to determine how many sample points are required and how to select them. Also, a superposition model is proposed to improve the accuracy of the ANN model. This model is designed so that the peaks in the stress spectrum have a dominant influence on fatigue damage. In order to better simulate the correction factor around the peak, the model considering only the data of the periphery of the peaks and the model reflecting the whole data are superimposed. The total stress spectrum were calculated by summing stress spectrum induced by wind load from the ANN model and induced by inertia load from motion analysis based on linear wave theory. Numerical analysis for a 10 MW class wave and offshore wind hybrid power generation (WWHybrid) system, which is a kind of semi-submersible wind turbine platform, was performed to verify the performance of the proposed model. It was confirmed that the superposition model improves the accuracy by 20–50% compared with the single ANN model.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> This paper proposes a procedure to apply the regression model to predict the fatigue life of a floating wind turbine support structure. </LI> <LI> The proposed procedure shows the stress transfer function induced by wind loads as a function of mean wind speed and frequency through a neural network model. </LI> <LI> A sampling strategy for constructing a model and a superimposed model concept for reflecting different weights between samples to a model are suggested. </LI> </UL> </P>

        환경농업조성지구내 용수원 및 채수시기별 수질비교

        A study was conducted to investigate the seasonal changes in water quality of watershed in the Agricultural Environment Promotion Zone. samples collected were 12 GW (ground water), 2 IW (irrigation water), 2 SW (stream water) in An-Doug City, 4 GW, 6 IW, 11 SW in Young-Yang Gun, and sampling was conducted separately during dry and rainy season. In the ground water, EC and ionic species, except pH, were higher than those in stream water, and especially NO_3-N concentration exceeded the limitation of drinking water. Concentration of ions decreased as the sampling depth was far from the soil surface. During a rainy season, the concentrations of NO_3-N and K In the stream water were slightly higher than those during season. COD was lower during dry season in Yong-Yang, while the trend was contrasted to An-Doug. These results suggest that ground water was polluted by fertilization and compost while streamwater was polluted by loss of soil and organic during the rainy season. Principal chemical components related with changing water quality were EC, NO_3^-, Ca, Mg, Na, CI^-, SO_4^- in ground water, whereas NH_4-N, K, Mg, CI^-, SO_4^- in stream water.

      • 열화된 HK40 강의 마식특성에 관한 연구

        The erosion behavior of artificially aged HK40 steel was invested. Erosion tests were conducted at room temperature, 200℃ and 400℃ using Al_2O_3 particles. Erosion rates increased with the increment of temperature. The maximum erosion rate appeared with the impingement angle of 30 degree. The erosion rate increased, reached the maximum at 1000 hours, and after that, decreased with the heat treatment time. The mechanism of erosion seems to be the cutting wear which is very much associated with the strength of material. As results, the erosion rates were rather affected by the tensile strength and the strain hardening coefficient than the hardness and the yield strength. Such changes of material properties would be caused by the change of micro-structure due to the precipitation of carbide and the dissolution of solid element within matrix during the heat treatment.

      • S-580 : Vitamin D and carotid subclinical atherosclerosis in SLE

        Vitamin D and carotid subclinical atherosclerosis in SLE Chang-Bum Bae, Ju-Yang Jung, Bo-ram Go, Hyun-Ah Kim, Chang-Hee Suh Department of Rheumatology, Ajou University School of Medicine, Suwon, Korea Introduction Atherosclerosis develops earlier in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and is the important cause of mortality. It has been suggested that vitamin D deficiency contributed cardiovascular disease and immune dysregulation in SLE. Methods One-hundred two female patients with SLE and 52 normal controls (NC) were recruited. The carotid artery intima-media thickness (cIMT) and plague were assessed by B-mode ultrasound at the carotid artery level. Vitamin 25(OH)D3 levels were checked by immunoradiometric assay using the Bio-Line 25(OH)D3-Ria CT kit (Bio-Line S.A., Belgium). Disease activity markers were checked at the time of enrollment. Results The cIMT of SLE is 0.41±0.08mm, which is higher than NC (0.37±0.11 mm, p=0.012). Also, carotid artery plague index (PI) of SLE is higher than NC (0.68±1.39 vs 0.26±0.87, p=0.026). The cIMT was correlated with age (r=0.442, p<0.001), body mass index (r=0.246, p=0.013), waist-hip ratio (r=0.245, p=0.013), SLE disease activity index (r=0.239, p=0.016), taking aspirin (r=0.244, p=0.013), and the carotid artery PI was correlated with renal involvement (r=0.224, p=0.023) in patients with SLE. Vitamin 25(OH)D3 was not showed correlation with cIMT and carotid artery PI. Also, it was not correlated with disease activity markers. Conclusion In patients with SLE, the risk of cardiovascular disease measured by cIMT and carotid artery plaque was higher than NC, which may be derived from systemic inflammation. However, vitamin D levels were not showed significant correlations with carotid subclinical atherosclerosis. It may be not suitable to assess vitamin D as marker of disease activity or subclinical atherosclerosis.

        Structural Alterations in the Gill of the Red Sea Bream, Pagrus major, Exposed to the Harmful Dinoflagellate Cochlodinium polykrikoides

        The effects of Cochlodinium polykrikoides on the gill of red sea bream, Pagrus major, were examined to clarify the ichthyotoxic mechanisms of this plankton species. The gill of fish exposed to dense blooms over 3,000 cells/mL for 24 h showed severe epithelial separation: a severe edema was found in the secondary lamellar epithelium and interlamellar regions of primary filament. In addition, lipid peroxidation of gill tissue in Chchlodinium-exposed fish was about 2.5 times higher than that of control. The composition of glycoproteins in the gill mucus of Cochlodinium-exposed fish was also changed. These results suggest that the loss of structural integrity of cell membrances in fish gill may be deeply involved in fish death by C. polykrikoides.
