논문초록본 논문은 필자가 미국 위스콘신 대학에서 오년여의 기간 동안 담당하였던 영작문 강의의 경험에 기초한 것으로써, 특히 영작문 강의 교수와 이공계 학생들 사이에 엄연히 존재하는 오해와 갈등의 요소들을 해소하여 보다 생산적이며 창의적인 글쓰기 학습의 방향을 모색하고자 한다. 객관적이며 경험론적인 가치 기준에 길들여진 과학도들에게 주관적 창의성이 강조되는 수사학의 방법론을 이해시키고 그들이 작가로서의 자신을 인정하고 스스로를 재조명할 수있도록 유도하는 일이 영작문 교수가 처한 가장 커다란 과제이며 급선무일 것이다. 이를 위해 이공계 학생들이 본능적으로 느끼는 공포, 즉 글쓰기가 과학의 객관적 사실들을 희생하지않고도 행해질 수 있는 인간적이며 창조적인 작업이라는 것을 인식시키며, 동시에 작문 교수가 갖는 과학 분야에 대한 스스로의 무지함에서 오는 두려움을 극복하여 상반된 학문에 대한 배려와 이해의 폭을 넓혀야할 것이다. 이러한 교수와 학생 사이의 심리적 갈등과 분열의 해소는 작문 강의실 내에 만연해 있는 냉전의 분위기를 종식시킬 것이며, 비로서 학생은 작가로서 교수는 그들의 글을 읽고 감상하며 평가하는 독자로서의 기본적 위치를 확립하여, 과학과 수사학이란 상반된 두 분야가 평화롭게 공존하는 강의실에서 생산적이며 창의적인 글쓰기 교육이 이루어질 수 있을 것이다.

A Chronicle of a Christian malgr? lui:A Reading of Wise Blood

Wise Blood is a chronicle of a Christian malgré lui (in spite of himself) who paradoxically achieves the heroic stature by failing triumphantly to run away from God. In a fallen world where a good man (a true Christian) is hard to find, the protagonist plays the role of an exemplary hero in his total commitment to Christ and to the Cross of suffering. The stage of his vehemently stubborn attempt to escape God, who "would chase him over the waters of sin" constitutes the greatest portion of the chronicle. The shrill thesis of the novel―that is, once chosen, there is no escape from the clutches of Christ―is stressed by its circular journey pattern of escape from and return to God. The essay attempts to trace the footsteps of the hero's journey movement by dividing it into three major phases of the heroic adventure: departure―initiation―return. (Seokyeong Univ.)

The Fatal Encounter in “The Life You Save May be Your Own” and “Good Country People”

The core of the narrative in Flannery O'Connor’s two short stories discussed in this essay is the encounter between the main characters and the devil-intruder. The encounter is violent and fatal: the devil walks away with the most valuable loot, shaking their “self-intoxicated identity” to its roots. The devil-intruder forcefully crosses the threshold of the self-enclosed and supposedly inviolate world of the intruded and destroys their smug views of superiority and shallow sense of ownership by depriving them of what they most value. In the process, the mysterious intruder administers demonically anarchic power, ripping apart the outward facade of the intruded and exposes the fallen and sinful self. O'Connor’s devil is not to be “simply taken this or that psychological tendency,” but to be clearly recognized as the devil for the sheer malignancy he displays in his double-dealing ways. Supposing “the devil teaches most of the lesson that leads to self-knowledge,” O'Connor bestows on the darkly disruptive figure the role of playing a spiritual catalyst by delivering a harsh lesson, which may lead the self-knowledge of the intruded. Mrs. Crater of “The Life” and Hulga Hopewell of “The Good Country People” are the surest candidates to fall victim to the fatal encounter with the devil-intruder travelling in many protean forms and names. Their revelatory moment of self-knowledge is hideous and final. All Mrs. Crater’s earthly possessions prove insubstantial; Hulga’s intellectual pride with her Ph. D. in Philosophy proves inane as well. Each, given the opportunity to recognize her self-deception through the fatal encounter with the devil, has the moment of truth, which may or may not effect her change of heart. As to the final condition of each of the two characters, O'Connor intends to leave it open to the reader’s choice. The one thing for sure is that the devil is again at large, “looking for someone to devour.” The modern landscape O'Connor presents is “a territory held largely by the devil” and the subject of her fiction is “the action of grace” in such a world.

분열형 효모 Schizosaccharomyces pombe에서 자외선 유도유전자 UVI-180의 특성 연구

본 연구는 DNA 상해유도기작을 규명하기 위하여 하등 진핵생물인 분열형 효모 Schizosaccharomycespombe로부터 subtraction hybridization 방법을 이용하여 자외선 유도 유전자인 UVI-180을 분리하고 그유전자 구조와 발현양상을 조사하였다. UVI-180 유전자의 발현양상을 Northern hybridization 방법으로 살펴본 결과 자외선(ultraviolet- 조사 1시간 후에 최대의 발현 증가를 나타내었다. 반면 알킬화제인MMS(methyl methanesulfonate) 처리에 의해서는 전혀 발현이 증가되지 않았다. 이 결 과 UVI-180 유전자는 DNA . 유전자의 기능을 알기 위하여 null-mutant 세포 주를 제조하여 그 특성을 살펴본 결과 이 유전자는 세포의 성장에 필수적인 유전자임을 알수 있었다.

Man on the Go: A Reading of “The River” and “The Displaced Person”

This paper offers a reading of the two stories from O’Connor’s first collection of “stories about original sin,” “A Good Man is Hard to Find” and Other Stories. The collection is the dramatization of the traveler’s encounter with the demonic forces of darkness impeding the progress of his Godward journey to the “true country, which the writer with Christian conviction will consider to be what is eternal and absolute.” Delineating the course of man on the go, O’Connor surveys the modern road on which her characters are making their journey and reports it as “a territory held largely by the devil.” Despite the darkly perilous nature of the journey, man’s fallen state compels him to be forever on the go—either toward further exile from or return to the “true country.”Young Harry in “The River” finds his “Kingdom of Christ” by submerging himself into the river; Mrs. Shortley in “The Displaced Person” finds hers at the end of the road. The frightening deaths that befell to them signal the end of their long earthly journey from suffering to penance and at the same time the beginning of their spiritual journey to God. Their sudden, violent deaths are undoubtedly good ones since by losing their life they make a breakthrough from the sordid earthly existence and find themselves at “the tremendous frontiers of [their] true country.” This way they make a great Christian paradox a literal reality: “He who loses his life will find it.”

롤랑 바르트의 『모드의 체계』에 대한 비판적 수용 : 의미작용의 기호학적 관점을 중심으로

기호학자로서의 롤랑 바르트 Roland Barthes는 페르디낭드 드 소쉬르 F. de Saussure의 영향을 받은 그레마스 A. J. dramas를 만나게 되면서 현대사회를 읽는 분석틀로 구조주의를 알게 되었다. 그는 소쉬르가 기호 과학을 위해 제안하였던 공시적 분석방법을 사용하여 패션, 음식, 가구, 자동차에 이르기까지 기호학의 적용대상을 확장시켰다. 기호표현 속에 공시되어있는 의미작용의 과정을 설명하였던 자신의 기호학 원리의 적용모델로 계획하였던 그의 『모드의 체계』système de la Mode는 언어의 본질 규명을 위하여 언어학을 기호학에 포함시켰던 소쉬르와는 달리 기호학을 다시 언어학에 귀속시키는 의미의 모델로써 모드의 체계를 바라보는 것이다. 이는 그의 형식주의적 텍스트 분석 활동 기간 중에 이루어 것으로써, 저자가 이미 인정하였듯이 존재 방식 혹은 창작 방식이라는 단어 '모르의 체계에 대한 설명으로는 불충분한 것이었다. 모드는 언어체계 내부에서 단어나 구 그리고 이야기와도 같은 언표들의 의미를 연구하는 언어학적인 의미론에 귀속되기보다는 오히려 그가 "저자의 죽음"으로 공언하였던 문화적 코드로써의 글쓰기와 자연으로써의 육체가 상호 침투되는 존재론적인 "텍스트'성에 의해 직조되어지는 무한한 의미 실천(Parole)의 장이며, 의미작용에 의해 어떤 대상화된 주체 혹은 상황을 지시하는 논리적 구조를 갖는다. 본 연구는 언어 연구 상의한 특수 분야를 지칭하는 의미론을 모드의 구조분석에 적용한 롤랑 바르트의 형식주의적인입장에 영향을 끼친 소쉬르의 기호학 일반 명제들을 소개하고, 구조언어학적 의미화 과정의 층위변화에 대하여 살펴보고자 한다.
