Objective : This study was designed to investigate the effects of Curcuma longa Rhizoma(CLR) on asthma. Methods : Detecting splenocyte proliferation rates, cytokines and antigen specific antibody isotypes in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF). In addition, the present author I also investigated changes in spleen and histopathological changes of lung tissues. Results : Oral administration of CLR lowered spleen weight and splenocyte proliferation rates. In addition, levels of IL-4, IL-17A and Granulocyte/Macrophage Colony-Stimulating Factor(GM-CSF), Th2 driven cytokines, were lowered respectively and IFN-g, and Th1 driven cytokine, were elevated by CLR. Levels of Ovalbumin(OVA) specific IgE and IgGl in BALF were also lowered by oral administration of CLR too. Conclusion : CLR is useful to treat patients with asthma and the mechanisms are related to the in suppression of Th2 skewing reactions.

A halochromic fluorescence dye was synthesized to fabricate acid-gas sensing textiles. The dye has a maximumabsorption at 436 nm and stokes shift of 54 nm in ethanol, which means that it exhibits a typical fluorescence color ofgreenish yellow. The dye was designed to have good substantivity toward hydrophobic and chemical resistant polyethylenicfibers, such as high molecular weight polyethylene (HMWPE) fibers, by introducing di-butyl and t-butyl groups on coumarinand benzoxazole moieties of the chromophore, respectively. The fluorescence dye showed the change of both color andfluorescence emission properties not only in a solution by addition of hydrochloric acid but also inside the HMWPE fiber onexposure to gas phase hydrogen chloride even at relatively low concentrations. From the repeat test, the sensing performancewas maintained reversibly even after 20 repeat cycles of adsorption and desorption of gas phase hydrogen chloride. TheHMWPE fabrics dyed with the fluorescence dye can be washable by showing fastness of rating 4-5 to washing.

A textile-based chromogenic sensor was fabricated to react against small amount of gas phase alkaline chemicals. A modified bromothymol blue (mBTB) having two linear pentyl substituents on the chromophore was synthesized to givegood affinity and wash fastness on nylon substrates as well as recognizable color change by exposure to gas phase basicchemicals such as ammonia and alkylamines. The color change properties of the mBTB were examined in solution and onnylon fabrics at various alkaline conditions. The nylon fabric dyed with mBTB exhibited very sensitive and rapid reactionshowing color change over 50 from orange to dark khaki even at 10 ppm of ammonia in a couple of minutes. The textilesensor appeared to be reused more than 20 repeat cycles. The textile sensor was tested for fastness to washing, rubbing andlight. The wash fastness of mBTB was significantly improved compared to the conventional bromothymol blue.
