Tuberculous osteitis of the skull is an uncommon condition, first reported by Reid of Erlangen, who described two cases in 1842. By 1933. only 220 cases had been recorded in world literature (Strauss). It occurs in approximately 1%. of all patients with tuberculous osteitis and is diagnosed by clinical manifestation, skull roentgenogram, smear and culture of aspirated pus, and biopsy of granulation material. It responds readily to chemotherapy and the prognosis is favorable. To the best of our knowledge, the condition has not been previously reported in Korea. But recently we experienced a case of tuberculous osteitis of the skull in an 18-year-old male patient who complained of dyspnea, chest pain, multiple swelling of scalp and right eye proptosis. The patient was treated with antituberculous medication and discharged with his condition improved.

Purpose: Bronchogenic carcinoma is generally considered as a disease that predominantly affects middle-aged and elderly man. Relatively a small number of patients are diagnosed in the third and fourth decade of life or earlier. The current study was performed to review the clinical characteristics of bronchogenic carcinoma in patients younger than 40 years of age. Subject and methods: Total 32 patients who visited and diagnosed as primary lung cancer at the Pusan National University Hospital from January 2000 to December 2005 were analysed. Results: The results obtained were summarized as follows. 1) The total number of patients was 32 cases : 14 case of man and 18 cases of women. Average age was 35.3 ± 4.6 years. Male to female ratio was 1 : 1.46. 2) Adenocarcinoma was the most frequent cell type of young age lung cancer group. 3) Stages Ⅲ and Ⅳ (89.5%) tumors were frequent in young age lung cancer group. 4) Distant metastasis rate(68.8%) was also higher in young age lung cancer group. Conclusions: The predominance of adenocarcinomas, the lower male-female ratio, and the high incidence of advanced stage lung tumor at the diagnosis are the characteristics of lung cancer in patients younger than 40 years of age.
