박연미,최경미 한국현대언어학회 2001 언어연구 Vol.17 No.1
This paper studies the effects of English immersion program by adopting three different statistic models i.e. multivariate linear model, univariate linear model and multiple comparison. In particular, it aims at sorting out the relevant factors that lead to the different test results among students. To do so, it shows how pre/post-test results are correlated with some objective information of students collected from the questionnaire. The factors are to be said to be statistically meaningful as the three models show the identical results. This paper is worthwhile in the way of factoring out the relevant elements that result in the difference of English proficiency, which eventually suggests a way to enhance English proficiency.
Multivariate Analysis of Variance for the Factors that Affect the Improvement of English Proficiency
박연미,최경미 한국현대언어학회 2005 언어연구 Vol.20 No.3
This paper is intended not only to examine the overall effect of the immersion program, but also to sort out elements that affect elementary students' English proficiency and its improvement. After setting both explanatory and response variables based on the questions from the questionnaire, this paper adopts the generalized linear model and multivariate analysis of covariance for the analysis. By analyzing nine quantitative and three qualitative variables, this paper indicates that only six variables including Grade, Native Tutor Educated, Tutored Hours, the First Learning Age, P-Positive and P-Negative are significant in the test results. It also shows that among the explanatory variables, only three factors such as Grade, Korean Tutor Educated and P-Positive play an important role in the improvement of English proficiency.

This paper critically reviews the salient features of AGREE advocated in late Minimalism. It is to show that AGREE-based grammar is doomed to suffer from the shortcomings in both conceptual and empirical points of view. Conceptually, the argument that AGREE is a more economical operation than MOVE does not fit with the hypothesis that both AGREE and MOVE is a virtually conceptually necessary(VCN) operation. Empirically, expletive construction, a classic example for AGREE-based analysis, is to be recapitulated by MOVE-based analysis. That is, it is to show that AGREE-based analysis cannot account for some prominent characteristics of there-construction.
A Loophole of the EPP-less Movement Analysis
박연미 한국생성문법학회 2007 생성문법연구 Vol.17 No.4
This paper is to point out a loophole of the EPP-less movement analysis to successive cyclic movement proposed in Bošković(2007). Bošković's analysis can be regarded as a hybrid of early and current minimalist analyses to successive cyclic movement. Although the EPP-less movement analysis has tried to capture the insights of both the early and the current minimalist analyses, this paper shows that it also is not free from the most serious drawback in the EPP-driven analysis, namely a look-ahead problem. Some other problems remaining in the EPP-less movement analysis are discussed.
A Remark on the Remnant Movement Analysis of Gapping
박연미 한국영어학회 2011 영어학 Vol.11 No.3
This paper is to look into a particular analysis of gapping, namely, the remnant predicate movement analysis by Johnson (1996, 2009). After discussing both merits and demerits of the analysis, I propose an alternative analysis that is meant to capture the insights of the two approaches of gapping, that is, the ellipsis analysis and the movement analysis. More specifically, gapping in the new analysis is argued to be a combination of across-the-board verb movement followed by a phonological deletion rule.

Active and passive verbs differ in their allowance for VP adverbs such that active verbs allow the adverbs to follow them while passive verbs allow the adverbs either before or after them. This paper is to propose an account for the distributional difference of VP adverbs with respect to the voice of the verb after discussing both some empirical and theoretical shortcomings of Haumann’s (2007) account. It will be argued that it is not the value of voice, but the different structure of passive and active verbs that is responsible for the distributional difference of VP adverbs. In particular, the VP-Focus phrase is proposed for the structure of passives. Thus the new account eventually supports the argument that active and passive verbs project a different syntactic structure and accordingly trigger a different kind of movement of the verb involved.
Case As an Irreducible Feature
박연미 한국현대언어학회 2012 언어연구 Vol.28 No.1
The goal of this paper is to provide some empirical data to reinforce an argument that both the Extended Projection Principle and structural Case are needed as an independent formal feature in the grammar although their formal properties may overlap to a great extent. To lead the argument this paper deals with subject inversion constructions such as expletive constructions, quotative inversion and locative inversion constructions. This paper is solely based on a model of grammar that distinguishes the covert component from the overt component.
