How the L.A. Riots Was Remembered in Korean Cinema: Western Avenue and Shattered American Dreams
2013 International Journal of Contents Vol.9 No.1
The L.A. riots, which happened during three days from April 29 to May 1, 1992, are viewed as the most deadly and destructive riots in American history. Depicted in blaring front-page headlines and violent pictures on television, this urban upheaval received epic exposure in many countries. In Korea, it was especially shocking due to the viewpoint that highlighted the conflict between Korean and African Americans. This paper aims to review the black‐Korean conflict during the 1992 L.A. riots in a Korean movie, Western Avenue. It is a film that narrates the despair of Korean Americans in the context of the L.A. riots, while placing American ideologies on trial. It is the only feature-length film to portray the story of Korean Americans in the L.A. riots. This paper examines some of the factors that resulted from the 1992 L.A. riots before the discussion of Western Avenue. Then, the paper analyzes the story of the Korean American in the film, focusing on how this film deals with the black‐Korean conflict during the 1992 L.A. riots.

The Korean films in the 1980s played an important role in impeding the interaction between the media and the audience. In terms of two mechanisms of money and power, the Korean films lost the function of publicity and were forced to disregard positive aspects of culture as a way of understanding society. As a mass medium, the film did not give people the space for critical thought and discussion on social reality. This study tries to discuss how Korean movies in the 1980s functioned as a bulwark of critical debate provided by the interaction between cultural texts and audiences through the notion of the public sphere. For Habermas, the public sphere provides a basis for critical analysis in order to reveal the relationship between media and economic and administrative power in a modern society.
Vol.7 No.5
Experimental study for a submerged structure was conducted to protect coastal structures and shorelines. The rectangular submerged structure known as the most efficient shape among various submerged structures in the literature was fabricated at the nose of a rubble mound breakwater. The reflection coefficients and the run-up heights along the slope of a breakwater were measured for different significant wave heights and periods. It is found in this study that the reflection coefficient is affected more relatively by the significant wave period than the significant wave height and the run-up heights are reduced approximately 28% in terms of and 26% in terms of , respectively, by the installation of a submerged structure inducing the interception and breaking of waves.
Adorno and Critical Perspectives on the Culture Industry and Film
Vol.0 No.19
Adorno's theory of the culture industry constitutes one of the most comprehensive critical perspectives on the mass media in contemporary society. He sees film as a component of the culture industry. Adorno develops the pessimism about modern culture and film, displaying the aspects of reification in the discussion of the culture industry. For him, reification is ultimately considered "identifying thought" in order to conform to the status quo. By reification, he discloses the transformation of culture into the industrial culture. This paper attempts to examine Adorno's argument on the essence of the film medium in his critique of the culture industry. Furthermore, this paper tries to put some questions in order to rethink Adorno's perspective on film.
