        Preserved Hippocampal Glucose Metabolism on 18F-FDG PET after Transplantation of Human Umbilical Cord Blood-derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells in Chronic Epileptic Rats

        Human umbilical cord blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hUCB-MSCs) may be a promising modality for treating medial temporal lobe epilepsy. 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) is a noninvasive method for monitoring in vivo glucose metabolism. We evaluated the efficacy of hUCB-MSCs transplantation in chronic epileptic rats using FDG-PET. Rats with recurrent seizures were randomly assigned into three groups: the stem cell treatment (SCT) group received hUCB-MSCs transplantation into the right hippocampus, the sham control (ShC) group received same procedure with saline, and the positive control (PC) group consisted of treatment-negative epileptic rats. Normal rats received hUCB-MSCs transplantation acted as the negative control (NC). FDGPET was performed at pre-treatment baseline and 1- and 8-week posttreatment. Hippocampal volume was evaluated and histological examination was done. In the SCT group, bilateral hippocampi at 8-week after transplantation showed significantly higher glucose metabolism (0.990 ± 0.032) than the ShC (0.873 ± 0.087; P < 0.001) and PC groups (0.858 ± 0.093; P < 0.001). Histological examination resulted that the transplanted hUCB-MSCs survived in the ipsilateral hippocampus and migrated to the contralateral hippocampus but did not differentiate. In spite of successful engraftment, seizure frequency among the groups was not significantly different. Transplanted hUCBMSCs can engraft and migrate, thereby partially restoring bilateral hippocampal glucose metabolism. The results suggest encouraging effect of hUCB-MSCs on restoring epileptic networks.

        Androgyny of Sword Dance Costumes in the Joseon Dynasty

        Neo-Confucianism was the dominant ideology of the Joseon Dynasty Korea. Male and female costumesreflected a clear distinction in male and female sex roles. This study analyzes cross-dressing in sword danceperformances. The research method examines relics, paintings, pictures, and documents relevant to sword dancecostumes as well as for the military. The results are: First, the composition of sword dance costume was jeogori(upper garment), skirt, and shoes with military costume of jeollip (hat), jeonbok (long vest), and jeondae (belt). Second, the sword dance costume and military costume are very similar except for the basic inner wear, shoes,some details and methods of wearing. Third, the sword dance costume gradually adopted military items andfeatures. The sword dance costume was basically female, with overall additions of a male costume, to expressan androgynous image; however, the cross-dressing phenomena in the sword dance were not intended for thepursuit of sexual pleasure.

        BaZr<sub>0.85-x</sub>Pd<sub>x</sub>Y<sub>0.15</sub>O<sub>3-</sub><sub>δ</sub>/ Carbonates 복합전도체 전기적 특성 연구

        PdO-doped $BaZr_{0.85}Y_{0.15}O_{3-\delta}$ (BZPY) proton conductors have been proposed as applicable for intermediate temperature electrolytes for protonic ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs) because the PdO doping is effective for improving the proton conductivity of $BaZr_{0.85}Y_{0.15}O_{3-\delta}$ (BZY) with high affinity for hydrogen. In order to further improve the conductivity of BZPY, two-phase composite electrolytes consisting of a BZPY and molten carbonate were designed. Dense BZPY-based composite electrolytes were fabricated after sintering at $670^{\circ}C$ for 4 h, since molten carbonates fill the grain boundary of the porous BZPY matrix. Furthermore, BZPY/$(Li-0.5Na)_2CO_3$ composites show a significantly enhanced protonic conductivity at intermediate temperatures. This may be because easy proton transport is possible through the interface of the carbonate and oxide phase.

        Effects of Early Surgical Exploration in Suspected Barotraumatic Perilymph Fistulas

        Objectives. Treatment of traumatic perilymph fistula (PLF) remains controversial between surgical repair and conservative therapy. The aim of this study is to analyze the outcomes of early surgical exploration in suspected barotraumatic PLF. Methods. Nine patients (10 cases) who developed sudden sensorineural hearing loss and dizziness following barotrauma and underwent surgical exploration with the clinical impression of PLF were enrolled. Types of antecedent trauma,operative findings, control of dizziness after surgery, postoperative hearing outcomes, and relations to the time interval between traumatic event and surgery were assessed retrospectively. Results. All patients had sudden or progressive hearing loss and dizziness following trauma. Types of barotrauma were classified by the origin of the trauma: 4 external (car accident, slap injury) and 6 internal traumas (lifting, nasal blowing,straining). Surgical exploration was performed whenever PLF was suspected with the time interval of 2 to 47 days after the trauma. The possible evidence of PLF was found during surgery in 9 cases: a fibrous web around the oval window (n=3), fluid collection in the round window (RW; n=6) and bulging of the RW pseudomembrane (n=1). In every patient, vestibular symptoms disappeared immediately after surgery. The hearing was improved with a mean gain of 27.0±14.9 dB. When the surgical exploration was performed as early as less than 10 days after the trauma,serviceable hearing (≤40 dB) was obtained in 4 out of 7 cases (57.1%). Conclusion. Sudden or progressive sensorineural hearing loss accompanied by dizziness following barotrauma should prompt consideration of PLF. Early surgical exploration is recommended to improve hearing and vestibular symptoms.

        Bordetella bronchiseptica bateriophage suppresses B. bronchisepticainduced inflammation in swine nasal turbinate cells

        The development of therapeutic bacteriophages will provide several benefits based on an understanding the basic physiological dynamics of phage and bacteria interactions for therapeutic use in light of the results of antibiotic abuse. However, studies on bacteriophage therapeutics against microbes are very limited, because of lack of phage stability and an incomplete understanding of the physiological intracellular mechanisms of phage. The major objective of this investigation was to provide opportunity for development of a novel therapeutic treatment to control respiratory diseases in swine. The cytokine array system was used to identify the secreted cytokines/chemokines after Bordetella bronchiseptica infection into swine nasal turbinate cells (PT-K75). We also performed the real-time quantitative PCR method to investigate the gene expression regulated by B. bronchiseptica infection or bacteriophage treatment. We found that B. bronchiseptica infection of PT-K75 induces secretion of many cytokines/chemokines to regulate airway inflammation. Of them, secretion and expression of IL-1β and IL-6 are increased in a dose-dependent manner. Interestingly, membrane-bound mucin production via expression of the Muc1 gene is increased in B. bronchiseptica-infected PT-K75 cells. However, cytokine production and Muc1 gene expression are dramatically inhibited by treatment with a specific B. bronchiseptica bacteriophage (Bor-BRP-1). The regulation of cytokine profiles in B. bronchiseptica-induced inflammation by B. bronchiseptica bacteriophage is essential for avoiding inappropriate inflammatory responses. The ability of bacteriophages to downregulate the immune response by inhibiting bacterial infection emphasizes the possibility of bacteriophage-based therapies as a novel anti-inflammatory therapeutic strategy in swine respiratory tracts.

        한반도 출토 슴베찌르개 연구

        This paper is to analyze various components of every stemmed point in Korean Peninsula. Stemmed points, the most signal artifacts among Korean Upper Paleolithic assemblages, are considered as the artifacts which have relatively unquestionable authenticity compared to other artifacts due to the distinct stem on the bottom and the triangular head of the tip. They are mainly distributed from the southern Korean Peninsula to the western Japan. Especially, the stemmed points are closely tied in with the feature of the blade in the same period. With the development of blade-technology?certain blank, they appear to be typical in terms of the shape. This study aims at analysis of variation of the subject by observing the exterior form of every stemmed point excavated in Korean Peninsula. This paper, started with arranging of diverse terms, includes the transition phase on the basis of analysis of form, crafting techniques, sites, and so on. When it comes to the transition phase, the stemmed points are categorized into three phases. The phaseⅠis identified the period of the advent of stemmed points. They consist of coarse particles such as quartz, bulging sections, being irregularly shaped. The phase Ⅱ is the full-fledged process where assimilation between blade-technology and stemmed pointmanufacture occurs. The phase Ⅲ represents the decline of the artifacts, but it is hard to regard it as the period of complete extinction. They are shown to be gradually replaced by other points: the obsidian points from Suyanggae or Sam-ri. 현재까지 슴베찌르개에 대한 연구는 교류와 전파, 지역 간 비교에 그 초점이 맞추어져 있으며 정작 석기 자체의 연구는 미진하였다. 따라서 본고에서는 석기에 중점을 두고 형태분석을 통한 의미 도출 작업이 필요하다고 판단하여 속성분석·제작기법·공반유물·출토유적·유적 내 석기 집중부 등을 검토하는 작업을 시도하였다. 먼저 속성분석에서는 슴베찌르개를 소재박편·평면형태·단면형태로 나누어 각각의 속성을 검토하였다. 그 후 절대연대·공반유물·층위에 입각하여 유적을 시간 순으로 배열하고, 이에 따른 슴베찌르개 변화 양상을 앞 장의 속성들을 위주로 검토하였다. 그 결과 호평동 유적, 용방 유적을 기점으로 3단계로 구분되었다. 각 단계는 석재, 소재박편, 크기에서 차이를 보였다. 또한 소재박편이 일반박편에서 돌날로, 돌날에서 좀돌날로 교체되는 시기와 돌날, 좀돌날 기술의 등장시기 사이에 공백기가 있었다. 이 후 앞장의 분석을 토대로 슴베찌르개의 제작기술과 출토양상을 검토하여 슴베찌르개의 전개양상을 살펴보았다. Ⅰ단계는 출현기로 일반적인 슴베찌르개 형태와는 달리 볼록한 단면, 입자가 굵은 석재 등 양면이 가공된 포인트형 석기들과 비슷한 형태를 지녔으나 복수의 문화층에서 슴베찌르개가 확인되고 본 단계부터 사용 및 제작의 연속성이 확인된다. Ⅱ단계는 본격적인 돌날기술과 슴베찌르개 제작의 융합과정으로서 대량 출토되는 경우가 많고 그 사용도 활발한 단계이다. 이 단계에서는 길이 약 5~8cm의 전형적인 슴베찌르개가 사용된다. Ⅲ단계는 마지막 단계에 해당하지만 단선적인 쇠퇴기로 볼 수는 없다. 서로 다른 석기 집중부, 복수의 층에서 슴베찌르개가 확인되기도 하며, 형태는 Ⅱ단계와 비슷하나 다만 그 크기가 작아지는 경향을 보인다. 이점은 좀돌날의 사용과 연관될 것이다. 이후 수양개 및 삼리유적의 흑요석제 슴베찌르개를 기점으로 다른 기종으로 대체된다.
