In this study evidence is presented for the effectiveness of tracking to improve EFL learners’ speaking competency. EFL speaking fluency can be assessed in various aspects, among which we focus on pronunciation (in particular, suprasegmental features). We used the tracking technique by which the subjects listen to a recorded material and repeat it modeling the native speaker’s pronunciation in every aspect. We hypothesized that tracking could help learners improve the naturalness of their pronunciation, which can be analyzed in terms of the key factors such as general impression, segmental pronunciation, stress/intonation, speech rate, and thought group. The experimental group of Korean adult EFL learners were required to do nine tracking tasks during one semester, and three native English teachers evaluated the subjects’ speaking, focusing on their pronunciation. Both the experimental group and the control group took a pretest and a posttest, and the results were compared through statistical analyses. We found that the experimental group of Korean adult EFL learners significantly outperformed the control group in the key factors of pronunciation. We argue that tracking is a verified and desirable method to improve EFL speaking fluency.

In this paper, we develop a polymeric blend membrane based on CO2-philic poly(2-[3-(2H-benzotriazol-2-yl)- 4-hydroxyphenyl] ethyl methacrylate)-poly(oxyethylene methacrylate) (PBEM-POEM) comb copolymer, which was synthesized by facile free radical polymerization. The PBEM-POEM (PBE) comb copolymer was blended with a commercial oligomer, low-molecular-weight poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG, Mw = 200 gmol-1) with various ratios to prepare CO2/N2 separation membranes. From the result of CO2/N2 separation test of the PBE/PEG blend membranes with the various PEG contents, we could conclude that with increasing PEG content, the CO2/N2 selectivity significantly increased while the CO2 permeability decreased showing trade-off relationship. However, when comparing the performance of the PBE/PEG (9 : 1) with the PBE/PEG (7 : 3) membrane, the CO2 permeance decreased by only 8.3%, while the N2 permeance decreased by 69.1%. Therefore, the CO2/N2 selectivity dramatically increased from 33.8 to 100.3. This could be because the POEM chains, which account for 80% of the PBE copolymer, favorably interact with PEG and lead to a more compact chain structure, which was confirmed by FT-IR, XRD and SEM analysis. The PBE/PEG (7 : 3) blend membrane had the most optimal gas separation performance, showing a CO2 permeance of 170.5 GPU and CO2/N2 selectivity of 100.3.

When we hear someone's voice, even without having met the person before, we usually make up a certain mental image of the person. This study aims at investigating the relationship between the voice and the image information carried within the voice. Does the mental picture created by the voice closely reflect the real image and if not, is it related with the real image at all\ulcorner To answer the first question, a perception experiment was carried out. Speech samples reading a short sentence from 8 males and 8 females were recorded and pictures of subjects were also taken. Ajou University students were asked to participate in the experiment to match the voice with the corresponding picture. Participants in the experiment correctly match 1 female voice and 4 male voices with their corresponding pictures. However, it is interesting to note that even in cases of mismatch, the results show that there is a very strong tendency. In other words, even though participants falsely match a certain voice with a certain picture, majority of them chose the same picture for the voice. It is the case for all mismatches. It seems that voice does give the listener a certain impression about physical characteristics even if it might not be always correct. By showing that there is a clear relationship between voice and image, this study provides a starting point for further research on voice characteristics: what characteristics of the voice carry the relevant information\ulcorner This kind of study will contribute toward the understanding of the affective domain of human voice and toward the speech technology.
Bridgman 결정성장공정에서 각속도변화가 유동장 및 열전달에 미치는 영향

A simplified model for the so-called ACRT(accelerated crucible rotation technique) Bridgman crystal growth was considered in order to investigate the principal effects of the periodic variation of angular velocity. Numerical solutions were obtained for Ro=0.5, Ra=4.236*10$_{6}$ and E=2.176*10$^{-3}$ . The effects of spin-up process combined with natural convection was investigated as a preliminary study. The spin-up time scale for the present problem was a little larger than that observed for homogeneous spin-up problems. Numerical results reveal that over a time scale of (H$^{2}$/.nu..omega.$_{f}$)$^{1}$2/ the forced convection due to the formation of Ekman layer predominates. When the state of rigid body rotation is attained, natural convection due to buoyancy emerges as the main driving force and them the steady-state is approached asymptotically. Based on our preliminary results with simple spin-up, several fundamental features associated with variation of rotation speed are successfully identified. When a periodic variation of angular velocity was imposed, the system response was also periodic. Due to effect of mixing, the heat transfer was enlarged. From the analysis of time-averaged Nusselt number along the bottom surface the effect of a periodic variation of angular velocity on the interface location could be indirectly identified.d.
