Induction of erythroleukaemia by F - MuLV and Purification of Erythropoietin

Friend Murine Leukemia Virus (F-MuLV) is affective against 2-day old new borns in NFS/n Swiss mice. Infected babies suffer from splenomegaly and anemia at the age of 4-5 weeks beyond which the condition worsens and is fatal. However, the spleen size can be reduced by hypertransfusion for 8 weeks. If left alone after this treatment, the spleen enlarges and becomes palpable again. This time the spleen cells are transplantable and inflict the same disease if injected to normal adults. While these leukemic cells were considered to be hormone-independent, addition of erythropoietin (EPO) was found to be essential for maximum growth in culture. Influence of EPO on the in vivo growth of leukemic cells was indicated by our findings that administration of the hormone caused a more severe leukemia and rapid death while, transfusion of red blood cells, which lowers endogenous EPO, led to increased survival of leukemic mice. It is suggested that hormone-associated therapy may be efficacious in the treatment of this and perhaps, other leukemias. Several erythroleukemic cell lines released factors which stimulated erythropoiesis in vivo and in vitro. A simple five step scheme has been devised which allows purification of this erythropoietic activity to apparent homogeneity. The methods employed included lectin affinity chromatography (wheat germ agglutinin), gel filteration (ultro gel ACA 44), ion exchange, hydroxylapatite, and high performance liquid chromatography, Following polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, biological activity was recovered in an area corresponding to a molecular weight of 35,000 daltons. Silver staining of a polyacrylamide gel after electrophoresis of our most purified preparation revealed a single band of 35,000 daltons.

$TiO_2$ was successfully formed on a Ti specimen by MAO (Micro-Arc-Oxidation) method treated in $Na_3PO_4$ electrolyte. This study deals with the influence of voltage and working time on the change of surface microstructure and phase composition. Voltage affected the forming rate of the oxidized layer and surface microstructure where, a low voltage led to a high surface roughness, more holes and a thin oxidized layer. On the other hand, a high voltage led to more dense surface structure, wider surface holes, a thick layer and fewer holes. Higher voltage increases photocatalytic activity because of better crystallization of the oxidized layer and good phase composition with anatase and rutile $TiO_2$, which is able to effectively separate excited electrons and holes at the surface.
Multidisciplinary Functional MR Imaging for Prostate Cancer

Various functional magnetic resonance (MR) imaging techniques are used for evaluating prostate cancer including diffusion-weighted imaging, dynamic contrast-enhanced MR imaging, and MR spectroscopy. These techniques provide unique information that is helpful to differentiate prostate cancer from non-cancerous tissue and have been proven to improve the diagnostic performance of MRI not only for cancer detection, but also for staging, post-treatment monitoring, and guiding prostate biopsies. However, each functional MR imaging technique also has inherent challenges. Therefore, in order to make accurate diagnoses, it is important to comprehensively understand their advantages and limitations, histologic background related with image findings, and their clinical relevance for evaluating prostate cancer. This article will review the basic principles and clinical significance of functional MR imaging for evaluating prostate cancer.

The sex-linked, recessive otu1 mutant of Drosophila melanogaster was studied cytologically to reveal the effect of the otu gene mutation on oogenesis. Consequently, the germarium of the otu1 mutant was found to be larger as compared to the normal fertile one and contains many undifferentiated tumor cells resembling cystocytes. Each ovary consists of three types of ovarioles; ovarioles with only a germarium, ovarioles with a germarium and one tumor chamber, and ovarioles with a germarium and two tumor chambers. In the otu1 germarium, the mesodermal follicle cells invade the clusters of different number of tumor cells at the posterior region of the germarium in order to make the tumor chamber and the dividing frequency of the tumor cells in the .rst tumor chamber was six times more than in the second tumor chamber. Follicle cells surrounding the tumor chamber are morphologically normal, but the number of the follicle cells becomes less as the tumor chambers move down contrary to the fertile one. The otu1 mutant female never lays the egg and the formation of the vitelline membrane is incomplete. The otu1 mutant tumor cells also showed characteristics of certain rapidly dividing cells and its nucleus is lobulated.
An Empirical Study on Effects of Korea’s Cultural Exports

This paper aims to find how Korea’s cultural exports, a measure of cultural proximity, influence its total exports. Centered on consumption goods, detailed product-by-product analyses are also conducted. Empirical analyses using the gravity model show that a 100% increase of Korea’s cultural exports has the effect of increasing total exports by 3.9-4.7%; the export increasing impact of reproducible cultural goods is 3.8-6.1%. The one-year lagged cultural exports also significantly affect the current total exports. Although the overall positive impact of cultural exports is stronger to those of nondurable consumer goods, exports of some durable goods are also positively influenced by them. Meanwhile, the positive impact of cultural exports is larger in higher-income nations. In the case of higher-income countries, the export-increasing effect is larger on durable consumer goods, but, in the case of lower-income countries, larger on nondurable consumer goods. Asian countries are more positively affected by Korea’s cultural exports than those in the other regions. From the viewpoint of trade policy, Korea should take greater interest in cultural exports to higher-income countries in order to increase their positive impact.

Two genera of the plant bug in the subfamily Mirinae (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Miridae) are newlyreported from the Korean Peninsula with discoveries of Tolongia pilosa Yasunaga, 1991 and Yamatolygusinsulanus Yasunaga, 1994. The male genital structure of T. pilosa is remarked. Female genitalia ofY. insulanus is described for the first time. Morphological information such as diagnoses is also provided.
