A Trend of Cultural Studies of Dance Initiated by Susan Leigh FosterHyun Jung Kim, Ph.D.LecturerSungkyunkwan University, Suwon University, and the Korean Natioinal University of the ArtsThis paper aims to explore how the critical issues of cultural studies have influenced the recent development of dance studies in the United States. Cultural studies is an umbrella term that includes theoretical approaches drawn from poststructuralism, postcolonialism, multiculturalism, contemporary Marxism, new historicism, semiotics, psychoanalysis, deconstruction, and feminism. Cultural studies, which investigates the natural as a social, cultural, historical construction, has strong effects on methodologies in dance field as well as the humanities. Susan Leigh Foster initiated a trend of interdisciplinary dance scholarship in 1986 and since then some scholars have facilitated it following the theoretical approaches of cultural studies. The dance scholars examine dance as an embodied social, cultural practice. They enable dance studies previously marginalized within the academy to be a major academic discipline. Dancing bodies as a primary text manifest or subvert meaning and identity.In South Korea, more and more universities have offered cultural studies programs. The interdisciplinary programs are based on art history, film studies, gender studies, popular culture, and mass media, not on dance field. Considering the stagnant situation of domestic dance academy, it is necessary to apply the debates of cultural studies to dance scholarship. Cultural studies opens up a possibility for dance scholarship to go into wider academic communities.
창의적인 무용학 연구를 위한 입문교육 프로세스 및 연구 환경 개선방안 모색 : Amabile의 창의성 구성요인을 중심으로

This study is to provide entry education process which is useful to research beginners and instructors to perform creative dance studies. First, creative components such as expertise, creative-thinking skill, intrinsic task motivation which Amabile(1997) suggested have been applied first to perform studies. Then, the situation of dance studies was detailed. Models to develop creative studies have been schematized. As a result, it has been schematized from acquiring dance studies areas to recognizing dance areas and detailed knowledge in terms of expertise. from integration with adjoint academic disciplines to integration with adjoint academic disciplines of dance studies in terms of the creative-thinking skill, from provoking intrinsic motive related to studies to provoking intrinsic motive of researchers in terms of intrinsic task motivation. And in order to perform expressed creative study tasks, physical, mental, emotional external environments which were insisted by Amabile have been applied to research space, emergence, and environment for mood. Then fit to environment of dance studies, it was arranged to capable research design, instruction from expert, separate theories and practices. The way to improve research environment for dance studies was classified into study fund raising, study organization, study collaborating, and study culture. Here, first, for study fund raising, reward and punishment system is required to foster superior thesis presenters and long/mid-term support to individuals and organizations need to be intensified. Second, intensive investing structure should be established by founding and increasing contract labs and university labs in order to create study organizations. Third, academic societies for non-humane studies and joint academic contest should be recommended. Finally, it was suggested that the number of professors in dance studies major needs to increase to improve study culture so as to establish dignity of dance studies and extend educational period for it the in curriculum of the graduate course at university. 이 연구는 창의적인 무용학 연구수행을 위하여 초보 연구자와 지도자에게 유용한 입문교육 프로세스를 제공하고 무용학 연구 환경을 개선하기 위한 방안 모색에 목적이 있다. 먼저 창의적인 무용학 연구를 수행하기 위하여 Amabile(1997)이 제안한 창의성 구성요인인 전문성(expertise), 창의적인 사고능력(creative-thinking skill), 과제동기부여(Intrinsic task motivation) 요인을 창의적인 연구수행에 1차적으로 적용한 다음 무용학 연구 상황으로 구체화 하였다. 그 결과 전문성은 해당학문 분야의 전문지식의 습득에서 무용학 영역인지 및 세부지식을 습득하는 것으로, 창의적인 사고능력은 인접학문과의 융합에서 무용학의 인접학문 분야 융합으로, 과제동기부여는 연구수행과 관련된 내적 동기유발에서 연구자의 내적 동기유발의 과정으로 창의적인 연구 발현 모형을 도식화 하였다. 그리고 발현된 창의적인 연구 과제를 실제 수행하기 위하여 Amabile이 주장한 물리적, 정신적, 정서적 환경의 외부환경 요인을 각각 연구수행 공간, 연구 몰입, 연구 분위기의 연구 환경으로 대입한 다음 무용학 연구 환경 상황에 맞게 수행 가능한 연구 설계, 전문가의 지지, 이론과 실기의 분리로 구체화 하였다. 무용학 연구 환경을 개선하기 위한 방안은 크게 연구펀딩, 연구조직, 연구협력, 연구문화로 구분하였다. 그 결과 첫째 연구펀딩 조성을 위해서는 우수논문 발표자 육성을 위한 상벌제도를 마련하여 개인과 조직에 중장기적인 지원을 강화해야 하고 둘째, 연구조직 구성을 위해서는 대학연구소 및 계약적 민간 연구조직 설립 확충을 통해 집중투자 구조를 조성해야하며 셋째, 연구협력을 위해서는 인문학 이외의 학문분야 학회와 공동학술대회 개최를 장려해야 한다. 마지막으로 연구문화 개선을 위해서는 무용학 이론전공 교수의 수를 증강시켜 무용학의 위상을 세우고 대학원 과정의 커리큘럼에서 무용학 연구와 관련된 교육기간을 확장시킬 것을 제안하였다.

무용학은 태생적으로 융복합의 성격을 띄고 있다. 그동안의 무용학은 타학문 영역의 이론을 수용하여 예술이론으로만은 설명할 수 없는 무용현상을 다각도에서 이론적으로 규명해나가면서 무용학 영역을 확장해왔다. 그러나 디지털 혁명에 따른 테크늄과 인터렉션 그리고 자유와 개방이라는 융합사회의 특성을 종전의 무용학만으로 설명하기에는 역부족이다. 이에 국내 무용학의 융복합 연구동향을 고찰한 결과, 2000년대에 들어서면서 무용학은 1.다양한 영역의 융복합 무용학 연구 촉발, 2.융복합 프로그램 개발 연구 시도, 3.무용디지털콘텐츠 융복합 연구 활성화, 4 융복합 무용공연예술현상 연구 이상 , 네 측면에서 각 영역이 개별적이긴 하지만 지속적으로 연구가 진행되어 왔음을 알 수 있었다. 이는 무용예술의 기술융합 및 과학분야와 학제간 융복합 연구 그리고 타 학문영역과 통섭연구라는 측면에서 무용학의 영역확장 및 구조변화를 일으킬 수 있는 촉진제 역할을 하고 있었다. 그러나 문제점은 현재 연구개발안이나 연구프로그램은 무용디지털콘텐츠 융합 연구이외에는, 거의 대부분 현실화되거나 실용화되는 경우가 없었다. 이에 융합시대에 따른 무용학 발전을 위하여 다음 세 가지 결론을 도출했다. 첫째, 과학과 무용과 기술 이론이 집약된 무용융합학을 제안한다. 이는 융합사회에 따른 새로운 인문학적 모델을 제시할 수 있는 학문적 토대를 마련해 줄 수 있다. 둘째, 무용학의 학제적 융합연구가 현실에서 실효성을 거둘 수 있도록 이론을 현장에 상용화하는 행동주의적 단계로 이행해야 한다. 섯째, 무용융합공연의 연구기술 축적 및 활성화를 위해 대규모 위주의 융합공연 형태에서 아이디어가 참신한 소규모 융합공연 형태로 전환이 필요하다. Dance studies inherently have a nature of convergence and integration. Meanwhile, dance studies have extended their realm by investigating dance phenomena from many perspectives which art theories cannot explain. However, the previous and current dance studies are inadequate to explain a confluence society which is characterized as techuim, Interaction, freedom and openness according to the digital revolution. Hence, a result of research trend in domestic dance studies, it is found that dance studies have been studied in four perspectives since the early 2000s: first, a triggering the various studiesa of the convergent and integrative dance; second, an attempt to the convergent and integrative program development research; third, the vitalization of the convergent research on dance digital contents; and fourth, a research on the convergent dance art phenomena. These researches have played an important role in boosting a change in the structure and realm expansion of dance studies that are interdisciplinary research enabling a holistic approach to the integration and convergence between scientific technique, skills of dance art and other studies. However, it should be acknowledged that one problem is the current research development plan or/and research program have very little feasibility and practicality except an interdisciplinary research on the dance digital contents. Therefore, it is suggested for the development of dance studies in the age of convergence as follows: first, a dance convergent study integrated in skills and theories of dance and science that would pave the way for an academic foundation leading to a new humanistic model in the age of convergent; and second, a need for a paradigm shift that theories should be deployed in the scene on a commercial scale in order to produce effectiveness of the interdisciplinary and integrative research on dance studies by turning into a behavioristic research phase. third, it needs to changeover from large scale of convergent performance into small scale of convergent performance based on original idea for accumulation of teachnique research and promotion of dance convergent performance.
A Remark on Dance Research Methodologies

Dance studies has formulated the logic system of movement and has progressed in association with other disciplines. This article sets two research objectives: first to examine the distinct characteristics of the dance medium and the movement analysis systems, and second to investigate the direction and process of dance studies. Dance derives from human experience. It exists in its contemporary forms as an embodiment of human history and culture, as an ephemeral event. Dance is thus analyzed in terms of its functional units and symbolic meaning systems. Researching dance requires a means to document dance movements but also an ontological meaning of dance. This article uses perspectives from aesthetics and science of art to explore the fundamental issues on dance studies and changes in positivist approaches to dance. Finally, it emphasizes the importance of researching dance per se, affirming multidisciplinary approaches within contemporary dance studies.
국내 무용학 질적연구의 현황 및 특성 탐색 : 주요 질적연구 방법을 중심으로

본 연구는 국내 무용학 분야에서의 질적연구 현황을 고찰하고 특성과 시사점을 도출하는데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 학술 검색을 활용하여 무용학에서 주로 사용한 질적연구 방법별 분류를 통해 총 167편의 논문을 선정하여 분석하였다. 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 국내 무용학 질적연구에서 주로 사용되는 질적연구의 방법은 ‘현상학 연구, 생애사 연구, 사례 연구, 자문화기술지 연구, 내러티브 탐구, 실기기반 연구’로 분석되며, 연구동향, 연구주제 및연구방법, 연구사례의 측면에서 각 방법별로 독자적인 특성이 있는 것으로 파악되었다. 둘째, 국내 무용학 질적연구의 특성으로 ‘무용학 질적연구의 확장과 세분화, 무용학 질적연구의 주제 다각화, 무용의 특수성을 반영한 새로운 접근 시도, 무용학 세부 분야와 방법별 활용도의 차이’가 발견되었다. 향후 국내 무용학 질적연구의 발전을 위해 체계적이고 치밀한 연구설계, 질적속성을 드러내는 글쓰기, 무용학 질적연구 아카이브 구축 등을 제안한다. This study aims to examine the current state of qualitative research in the field of dance studies in Korea and to identi fy its characteristics and implications. A total of 167 papers were selected and analyzed through academic database searches, categorized according to the qualitative research methodologies commonly employed in dance studies. First, the predominant qualitative research methods in Korean dance studies include phenomenological research, life history research, case studies, autoethnography, narrative inquiry, and practice-based research. Each method demonstrated dis tinct characteristics in terms of research trends, topics, methodologies, and case studies. Second, the identified charac teristics of qualitative research in Korean dance studies include the expansion and diversification of qualitative research, the broadening of research topics, innovative approaches reflecting the unique nature of dance, and differences in methodological application across subfields of dance studies. To further advance qualitative research in Korean dance studies, this study proposes the necessity of systematic and rigorous research design, writing that highlights qualitative attributes, and the establishment of a dedicated qualitative research archive.
사회과학분야 : 다문화가족 대상 국내 무용 및 스포츠 연구동향 분석

This study aims to find the position of agenda and the future tasks related to the studies on the dance & sports area that have been conducted with multicultural families for 5 years from 2010 to 2014 by analyzing such studies focusing in dance related contents. The research method of this study is the analysis focused in the key words such as ‘Dance of Multicultural Family’ and ‘sports of Multicultural Family’ conducted with published journal using the academic journal search site. The subject studies are analyzed based on the number of presented studies of each type of academic journal, major study key word, major study subject, major research method and major study result using the key words. And, finally, 28 major contents presented in dance and sports related studies are organized and analyzed. The study results are as following: First, for the study subject, the number of studies on multicultural families’ children is the highest followed by the order of marriage immigrant females, marriage immigrant females and their children and multicultural families’ children versus. Second, qualitative method and the program effectiveness analysis are mostly in the studies. Also, some studies are on the program development while the others are conducted applying Delphi technique. Recently, studies that use integrated methods simultaneously applying qualitative and quantitative methods are presented. Third, major study results are composed mostly of researches on Roles and strategies for adaptation in the dance & sports for multicultural families and positive changes through the participation. Fourth, analysis results of major dance related contents show that traditional dance, creative dance, dance/movement therapy, traditional children song movement play and leisure school are proposed for program contents. Dance related leisure programs of many periods from 3 periods to 30 periods for multicultural families’ Korean life adaptation are found to be attempted. As conclusion, dance & sports activities for multicultural families are emerging as their important adaptation methods. Especially, dance related contents are shown to be continuously studied as active and interesting method to improve the expression and the emotional stability by using bodies and to increase the adaptation to Korean culture. It is anticipated that integrated studies that fully reflects various areas of leisure will be achieved through the inter-discipline studies with related learnings for multicultural families in the future.
글로컬 시대 지역무용 연구 과제 -대전 무용계를 중심으로

This paper aims to examine trends of dance studies focusing on Daejoen``s dance world and to suggest issues of local dance studies in the glocal era. Today``s glocal era emphasizes the dynamic identity of local culture, and needs methodologies of cultural studies for it. In this context, I investigated 26 dance studies focusing on Daejoen``s dance world and analyzed similarities and differences of their arguments. I argue that we need to develop research scope, theme, and methodology, beyond chronological record, for local dance studies, and that interdisciplinary research and archive of local dance contribute to the development of dance studies.

This study focuses on dealing with succession and modification for the function of korean traditional dance as a field of study; it aims to investigate what research is required for establishing Korean traditional dance as a study, away from the practice-centered learning of traditional dance. The research originates from the fact that dance department of the university may be nonexistent in the not-so-distant future. Thus, universities concerned ought to regard the dance as a study, with humanistic-sociologic, practical perspective and maintain the properties of identity, uniqueness, and differentiation of the dance. Convergence, a contemporary study trend, is employed for the purpose of studying traditional dance and learning and the results are as follows: first, now that Korean traditional dance has been passed down for a long time, humanistic research covering literature, historical studies and philosophy, could be carried out. Second, since traditional dance is defined as movement using human body, the relevant research area can be extended to natural science. Third, the dance is usually performed, centered on music of songs and dances and thus convergence study of synthetic art like music, art, costume, and props, should be implemented. Fourth, the branch studies of social science, such as politics, social studies, and economics, are to be made possible through an interdisciplinary approach, seeing that the cultural phenomena shown in the traditional dance have been interlinked with sociality and political nature of the time. Last but not least, Korean traditional dance could be applied to advertisements featuring broadband of smart phone and lifelong dance like traditional dance of yoga and living pictures; the research associated with modern culture industry could be a feasible plan, by means of development of taegeuk and stomatal movement and integration with other departments of art.
중년의 현대무용 전공인들의 라인댄스에 대한 이야기보따리 풀기 : 입문계기를 중심으로

목적 본 연구는 중년의 무용전공인들이 무용분야 내 다른 영역의 활동을 위해 라인댄스를 선택한 요인과 입문과정에 대해 살펴보았다. 방법 이 연구를 위해 질적사례연구방법을 채택하였고, 연구참여자 5명과의 심층면담으로 질적자료를 수집하고 분석하였다. 분석과정에서 삼각측정법, 동료검증, 참여자확인과정을 거쳐 연구의 신뢰성을 높이려는 노력을 하였다. 결과 첫째, 중년의 무용전공인들은 무용계에서 예술가로 살아가기 위해 강의 활동과 겸업하며 무대 활동을 이어갔지만, ‘현대무용 전공인으로서 설자리가 좁아짐’에 따라 무용계에서 다른 분야로의 진출을 모색하게 되었다. 그러나 ‘재사회화의 노력’에도 ‘어려움’을 겪게 되었으며, ‘주변의 소개’로 라인댄스를 접하게 되며 사회무용분야로 도전하게 되었다. 둘째, 중년의 연구참여자들이 재사회화의 도구로 라인댄스를 선택한 것은 라인댄스가 ‘중년’과 ‘현대 무용전공인’에게 적합한 특성과, ‘자격취득과정의 용이한 장점’을 가지고 있기 때문이었다. 결론 이러한 결과를 볼 때, 라인댄스는 중년의 현대무용 전공인들을 위한 재사회화 도구로 적합한 장르이다. 이 연구는 사회무용분야에서 활동하기를 원하는 중년의 현대무용 전공인에게 유용한 정보와 동기부여를 제공할 수 있을 것이다. 중년의 전문무용인들이 라인댄스를 통해 무용분야 타 장르에서 활발하게 활동하는데 이 연구가 기여할 수 있을 것이다. Objectives This study analyzed the cause factors and processing introductory opportunity in which middle-aged dance professional line dance instructor for the dance carrier decision. Methods For this study, a qualitative case study method was applied, and the results of the oral materials collecting and analyzing qualitative data by the in-depth interview with 5 participants. For the increasing the reliability of the study, triangulation, peer verification, and participant verification in the analysis process. Results The results of the study are as follows: First, middle-aged dance professionals continued managing their carrier as professional dancers while teaching with lectures and dancers to live as artists in the dance field. However, he encountered difficulties even in ‘re-socialization efforts’, and came into line dance instructor s introduction to the surroundings’ and took on a challenge in the social dance field. The middle-aged research participants as a method for re-socialization, the reason I chose line dance that is because it is has proper characteristics profession for “middle-aged” and “modern dance professionals,” and “acceptable advantages of the qualification acquisition processing.” In this result, line dance is an acceptable dance field genre as a re-socialization method for middle-aged dancer professionals. Conclusions According to the results of this study, line dance is an acceptable dance field genre as a re-socialization method for middle-aged dancer professionals. This study would provide useful information and motivation to middle-aged modern dance carrier decision who hope to work in social dance. The middle-aged dance professionals would contribute to be active activities of middle-aged professional dancers for other dance genres with line dance instructing. According to the results of this study, line dance is an acceptable dance field genre as a re-socialization method for middle-aged dancer professionals. This study would provide useful information and motivation to middle-aged modern dance carrier decision who hope to work in social dance. The middle-aged dance professionals would contribute to be active activities of middle-aged professional dancers for other dance genres with line dance instructing.

The Korean Society for Dance Studies has contributed to the development of dance studies. However the society is under fierce competitive circumstance because there are filled with lots of journals which are published by 13 societies and 4 university research institutes in the dance field. So it is important to facilitate collaboration community for the sustainable growth of the Korean Society for Dance Studies. In this paper, we analyzed collaboration community of the Korean Journal of Dance Studies in the aspect of co-authorship network, the results were as follows; First, the ration of single author paper is about 80%. Second, there are not collaboration among researchers. Third, the relative degree centralization and the relative betweenness centralization are low. Fourth, the average of the relative degree centralities has increase as time passes, but the average of the relative betweenness centralities is close to 0% regardless of research period. Finally, the standard deviations of the relative degree centralities range from .954 to 4.252, but the standard deviations of the relative betweenness centralities close to 0% regardless of research period. From the results, we found the implication for the sustainable growth of the Korean Journal of Dance Studies as follows. The Korean Society for Dance Studies needs to make it easy to communicate with researchers by facilitating an academic conference and monthly special lecture, it is necessary to build research field database of researchers for sharing idea or methodology among researchers. We expect the results will contribute to facilitate collaboration community in the Korean Society for Dance Studies.
