정수연 ( Su Yeon Jung ),김도완 ( Do Wan Kim ),서종철 ( Jong Chul Seo ) 한국공업화학회 2015 공업화학 Vol.26 No.1

Lacquer sap extracted from lacquer trees exhibits good thermal stabilities and antimicrobial properties. To apply these superior properties to functional packaging, polyurushiol (YPUOH) powders were prepared and blended into LDPE (low density polyethylene) to prepare three different LDPE/YPUOH composite films via a twin screw extruder system. Their morphology, thermal and antimicrobial properties as well as barrier properties of the LDPE/YPUOH composite films were thoroughly investigated to find out applicablities of the films as functional packaging materials. Although the interfacial interaction between LDPE and YPUOH was relatively weak, LDPE/YPUOH composite films exhibited good dispersion of YPUOH in LDPE, resulting in the enhanced thermal stability with YPUOH loading. Due to the good antibacterial property of as-prepared YPUOH, LDPE/YUOH composite films also showed an excellent antibacterial activity (R) of 99.9% against E. coli. Furthermore, the moisture barrier property of LDPE/YPUOH composite films increased with increasing YPUOH contents. Incorporating the relatively low amount of YPUOH in LDPE resulted in the apparent enhancement in thermal stabilities, antibacterial and moisture barrier properties, which made them promising candidates as a functional filler for packaging materials.

Fundamental Investigation of Functional Property of Concrete Mixed with Functional Materials

        Lee, Jong-Chan,Lee, Moon-Hwan,Lee, Sae-Hyun,Park, Young-Sin,Park, Jae-Myung Korea Concrete Institute 2006 International Journal of Concrete Structures and M Vol.18 No.e3

Environment-friendly materials are increasingly used as building construction materials nowadays, and the market share of those is growing. Accordingly, the research and developments in terms of environmental value are progressing steadily now. The main characteristics of environmental products are far-infrared radiation, negative-ion emission, electromagnetic wave shielding, and antimicrobial property. These products are often used in mortar and as spray on the finishing material. Nevertheless, there are hardly any research on the functional properties of concrete, the main material in construction field. Thus, we evaluated such basic properties of concrete as slump, compressive strength and air content while using such functional materials as sericite, wood-pattern sandstone, carbon black and nano-metric silver solution to focus on their functional properties like far-infrared radiation, negative ion emission, electro magnetic wave shielding, and antimicrobial activity in this research. The results indicated that the most useful material in the functional materials was carbon black. Sericite and nano-metric silver solution had a little effect on the functional property. Moreover, although wood-pattern sandstone had very high functional property, it exhibited too low compressive strength to be applied, to concrete as a factory product. Antimicrobial property of nano-metric silver solution in the concrete was not clear demonstrated, but if these specimens were to be aged in $CO_2$ gas for a long time, it might be apparent.

The physicochemical, safety and antimicrobial properties of Phyllanthus amarus herbal cream and ointment

        Tolulope O. Ajala,Mbang N. Femi-Oyewo,Oluwatoyin A. Odeku,Oluwasanmi O. Aina,Adebowale B. Saba,Olayinka O. Oridupa 한국약제학회 2016 Journal of Pharmaceutical Investigation Vol.46 No.2

The ethanol extract of Phyllanthus amarus (Schum and Thonn), a plant of ethnomedicinal importance, was formulated into herbal cream and ointment and evaluated using physicochemical, safety and antimicrobial properties. The extract was obtained by maceration and the antimicrobial properties tested on clinically isolated pathogenic bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and dermatophytes (Trichophyton rubrum and Candida albicans) using established methods. Cream and ointment formulations containing 1–10 % w/w extract was prepared and 4 % w/w humectant (glycerin) was incorporated into the cream while 5 % w/w surfactant (cetomacrogol 1000) was incorporated to the ointment. The results showed that the pH of the formulations was acidic and the viscosity ranged from 1250 to 4950 cP for ointments and 570–1233 cP for creams. The presence of humectant and surfactant significantly (p\0.05) reduced the viscosities of the formulations. The results of dermal irritation showed negligible irritation index while subchronic toxicity tests showed that the formulations did not cause any visible lesions in the skin of the animals after application for twenty-one days. The in vitro antimicrobial properties of formulations were concentration-dependent with the creams showing higher activity. Furthermore, the in vivo activity of the cream on S. aureus showed increased antibacterial activity with increase in extract concentration and humectant presence. The herbal cream and ointment of Phyllanthus amarus extract had acceptable physicochemical and safety profiles with significant (p\0.05) in vitro and in vivo antimicrobial activity. Thus, the formulations could be useful in the treatment of skin infections instead of using the extract for bathing and rubbing.

Influence of Acetylation on the Antimicrobial Properties of Chitosan Non-Woven Fabrics

        Shin, Hye Kyoung,Park, Mira,Kim, Hak-Yong,Jin, Fan-Long,Choi, Heung Soap,Kim, Keziah H.,Kim, David S.,Park, Soo-Jin Korean Chemical Society 2013 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.34 No.8

Chitosan non-woven fabrics were acetylated to improve their antimicrobial properties. The active chlorine content, antimicrobial properties, storage stability, and surface properties of acetylated chitosan non-woven fabrics were investigated. The active chlorine content of the fabrics increased upon reduction of the degree of the acetylation or increase in sodium hypochlorite concentration. Acetylated chitosan non-woven fabrics showed powerful antimicrobial activity by efficiently killing Escherichia coli and forming a growth inhibition zone for Staphylococcus aureus. Furthermore, scanning electron microscopy observations demonstrated that the acetylated chitosan non-woven fabrics were not damaged in sodium hypochlorite solution.

Effect of nano-clay type on the physical and antimicrobial properties of whey protein isolate/clay composite films

Sothornvit, R.,Rhim, J.W.,Hong, S.I. Applied Science Publishers ; Elsevier Science Ltd 2009 Journal of food engineering Vol.91 No.3

Whey protein isolate (WPI)-based composite films with three different types of nano-clays, Cloisite Na+, Cloisite 20A, and Cloisite 30B, were prepared using a solution casting method, and their physical and antimicrobial properties were determined in order to better understand the effect of nano-clay type on film properties. The resulting films exhibited an opaque appearance and haze, and the degree of this effect depended on type of nano-clays added. However, these films displayed a similar gloss and slightly lower transparency relative to transparent neat WPI film. The type of nano-clay used significantly influenced the tensile and the water vapor barrier properties of the composite films with the exception of Cloisite 30B, which had no negative effect. In addition, the WPI/Cloisite 30B composite films showed a beneficially bacteriostatic effect against Gram-positive bacteria, Listeria monocytogenes.

Antidiarrheal, Antimicrobial, and Antioxidant Properties of the Aqueous Extract of Tunisian Persimmon (Diospyros kaki Thunb.) Fruits

        Nourhène Dhawefi,Saber Jedidi,Kais Rtibi,Mourad Jridi,Houcem Sammeri,Chaima Abidi,Nacim Zouari,Hichem Sebai 한국식품영양과학회 2021 Journal of medicinal food Vol.24 No.10

Medicinal plants were used to prevent and treat numerous gastrointestinal disorders owing, in part, to their antioxidant capacity. The protective effects of Diospyros kaki fruit aqueous extract (DKFAE) against castor oil (CO)-induced diarrhea was studied. The in vitro antioxidant and antibacterial properties were investigated using colorimetric and biochemical analyses. In vivo, 60 male rats were divided into 6 groups of 10 animals each (n = 10): control (C), CO, CO+various doses of DKFAE (100, 200, and 400 mg/kg, b.w., p.o.), and CO+loperamide (LOP, 10 mg/kg, b.w., p.o.).The DKFAE was rich in tannins and showed interesting antioxidant and antibacterial activities. The liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS) analysis resulted in the identification of 16 phenolic compounds, among which quinic acid was the main one. The in vivo study showed that diarrhea was accompanied by an oxidative stress status as measured by an increase of lipid peroxidation, a decrease of glutathione and thiol group levels, as well as antioxidant enzyme activity depletion, such as glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, and catalase. The DKFAE administration significantly decreased the gastrointestinal transit in a dose-dependent manner. Besides, DKFAE protected against CO-induced diarrhea and intestinal fluid accumulation. Interestingly, DKFAE pretreatment counteracted all the oxidative stress status deregulation induced by CO intoxication. D. kaki fruit could be suggested for its strong protective effect against CO-induced acute diarrhea, which could be explained, in part, to its antimicrobial and antioxidant properties.

      • Antimicrobial effects of vetiver oil and its application on packaging material applied by dip coating method

Vol.2015 No.0

Paper and boards are the most widely materials used in food and drinks packaging. Recently, the paper and boards are usually coated by other polymer to increase the shelf-life or enhance safety while maintaining the quality of products, and it is known as active packaging. Active packaging has become one of the major topic of food packaging research areas. Using natural essential oils as coating materials could be considered, it more friendly and do not have any significant effect to environment. In this work, hand-sheets was treated with antimicrobial coating solution based on vetiver oil-hydrophobic starch and applied by dip coating method. This work was aimed to investigate the antimicrobial activity on that hand-sheets and physical properties.

양현주 ( Hyun Ju Yang ),이지현 ( Ji Hyun Lee ),이지현 ( Ji Hyeon Lee ),송경빈 ( Kyung Bin Song ) 한국응용생명화학회(구 한국농화학회) 2015 Journal of Applied Biological Chemistry (J. Appl. Vol.58 No.2

Corn fiber protein (CFP) was extracted from corn wetmilling by-product, corn fiber. CFP films containing various plasticizers and cross-linking agents were prepared and their mechanical properties were determined. Among the plasticizers and cross-linking agents used in this study, the CFP film containing 2 g fructose and 0.03% cinnamaldehyde had the most appropriate physical property. In addition, the CFP films containing green tea extract (GTE) were prepared by incorporating different amounts (0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5%) of GTE into the film-forming solution. Tensile strength, film solubility, and opacity of the CFP films increased with the addition of GTE, whereas elongation and water vapor permeability of the CFP/GTE films decreased compared to those of the control. The antioxidant activity of the CFP/GTE film was determined in terms of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging activity. As a result, antioxidant activity of the films increased with increasing GTE concentration. Furthermore, antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli O157:H7, Listeria monocytogenes, and Staphylococcus aureus increased with increasing GTE concentration. These results indicate that the incorporation of GTE could enhance antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of the CFP films.

Vol.20 No.2

Evidence shows there are flavonoid and polyphenol compounds in Ulmus cortex which has excellent antioxidant, anticancer and antimicrobial properties. This study summarizes our findings on effects of Ulmus cortex extracts(UDE) on quality characteristics of bread and the changes of microbial counts during storage. Dough yield and specific loaf volume of bread decreased significantly because the amount of UDE increased. Lightness of bread surface, redness of crumb and yellowness of crust were significantly increased. Texture evaluation showed that hardness was the highest in the bread prepared with 30% UDE. Sensory evaluation showed that odor, taste, texture, and overall acceptability were the best in bread which was with 10% UDE. At the beginning of the period of storage, there were not significant differences of microbial cell count as increasing UDE, but significant decreasing was observed after passing 6 days. A negative correlation was generally observed between the sensory and mechanical properties. The results of total microbial count show that adding UDE in processing bread extend bread's storage time.
