        IMPROVING SOCIOLINGUISTIC COMPETENCE (SC) THROUGH FEMINIST STYLISTICS (FS)

        Feminist stylistics (FS), like any other stylistics practice, draws basic assumptions from linguistics. Yet unlike other traditional stylistics practices, FS opens its doors to ideology and extra-textual factors in the analysis of a text. Unlike the formalist stylistics, for example, it renders less importance to linguistic form and linguistic elegance. Drawing relevant linguistic tools like passivisation, transitivity, agency and fragmentation from functional stylistics, FS can be applied to analyse power structures. In line with these assumptions, the ultimate aim of this research was to study the significance of FS in enhancing the sociolinguistic competence (SC) of students through teaching local poetry in English in the Ethiopian higher education context. A feminist stylistics model of teaching poetry was integrated with communicative language teaching (CLT) tasks so that an intriguing environment was recreated in the classroom for the students to develop their sociolinguistic competence. This project was an integral part of five other stylistics research projects. It was carried out on the basis of an experimental research design following a mixed method research. A total of 190 students (63.3%) were selected from the population of 300 students in various programmes of the Department of English and Other Languages at Adama University, Ethiopia, through a systematic sampling procedure. These students were again classified into experimental groups (95) and control groups (95) following a systematic sampling method. The students in the experimental group took FS module through the stylistics course which included FS and other modules in stylistics. A summary of the total mean gain score out of 20 showed an interesting result. Both the control and experimental groups performed almost similarly in their feminist stylistics pre-test which was calculated out of 20%. The experimental mean score was 9.8842 and a little bigger than the control mean score of 7.2316. Consequently, the t-test result showed that the existence of a mean difference of 1.33684 was not statistically significant. Therefore, there was no statistically significant difference between the mean test scores of the two groups. On the other hand, the t-test results for both pre and post tests for the feminist stylistics module were also observed. The t-value of the feminist stylistics post-test was 8.651. And, the table value of t-critical was 1.96 with 188 degree of freedom and at a significance level of 0.05. Because the t-value of 8.651 exceeded the t-critical value of 1.96 for a two tailed test at 0.05 level of significance for 188 degree of freedom, the null hypothesis was rejected. Therefore, the feminist stylistic method of teaching indigenous poetry does contribute to the improvement of the sociolinguistic competence of students in the English as a foreign language (EFL) context.

        북한문학사의 문체론 연구

        The purpose of this study was to analyze the stylistics of North Korea in the history of its literature. In particular, the focus was placed on the wide-range discussions about stylistics in the early years of North Korea's system formation in order to investigate the relations between North Korea's political system and its literature. The commentaries on stylistics published in the early Chosun Literature were analyzed. There is no doubt that the literary works made useful tools for the regime's authority to promote its political communication as an ideological mechanism In the works, the authors presented the system ideology from the former Soviet Union as the theme or created such main characters as could help the readers internalize the ideology in the sense of 'unity', which was an implicative psychological strategy. It was stylistics that was adopted as a major tactics tool in the psychological strategy of internalization. Employed by the regime as a means to control the public, stylistics was originated from the changes across the literary circles called bourgeois criticism of aesthetics. Later it worked itself to bring out 'Juche(the subject)' through another major change across the literary circles centered around the existing authors' conflicts with new faces. It's when it's expanded to embrace the tradition and language. Thus its huge contribution was made to deepening the regime's only system of the subject ideas more from a structural aspect. At a closer look, the internal disputes within the circles over the issue of rooting out bourgeois reactionary aesthetics brought about the anti-sectarian strife in cooperation with political arguments. The accomplishments of the anti-sectarian strife include a wide range of consensus about increasing the literature quality through strengthening styles. That is, the pursuit of formal aesthetics through styles was suggested for all the literary members. As the newly rising writers increased in numbers and confronted the old groups in the power game, the new faces argued that record-orientedness and mysticism should be overcome. To their criticism, the old generation authors borrowed the defense of political power from stylistics, which was the formal feature where they could be distinguished from the new faces. In addition to the rhetoric control for increasing literature quality, the issue of stylistics over 'Juche(the subject)' around the revisionist criticism began to put limits onto language in a wide range, which gave stylistics even more power. Having started with the authors, the discussion over stylistics made its final stop at the language control over the people' and 'Juche(the subject)' by the authority and thus became generalized. Around the Seoul Olympic games in 1988, there was another round of detailed control over styles in North Korea, which implies that 'appearance of stylistics' happens during the political changes in the literary history of North Korea. In other words, in the nation, literature has been a useful tool to control and regulate the psychological morale of the people as one of the major media. stylistics would exercise certain regulatory power in making people internalizing the system ideology and suppressing them through literature.

        근대 일본의 미디어 리터러시와 야노 류케이

        In this article, we analyse the stylistics of Ryukei Yano by examining Nihon Buntai Moji Shinron. Our analysis suggests that he presented the so-called “double stylistics” as an ideal stylistics to convey to a number of people what he learned in modern Japan. His stylistics stands out among the contemporaneous intellectuals in that it was not affected by the illusion of verbal- written unity, a sound-centred principle, and that it surpassed the mere idealism of the scholars of kana-stylistics and roman- alphabet-stylistics. He was also aware of the inefficiency of the existing kambun-stylistics and the difficulty of learning kanji, but he objected to the kango-abolishing movement, paying attention to the advantages of kango; it complements the phonetic aspects of Japanese native words, it is visually easily recognisable, and it is economical in terms of the printing media. Yano proposed the double stylistics as an intermediate semiotic system by properly resolving the following dichotomic factors: (i) language and sentence, (ii) voice and characters, and (iii) kanji (ideogram) and kana (phonogram). The double stylistics supported the publishing capitalism most effectively in modern Japan. In the history of the Japanese literature, compared with the analyses of modern novels based on verbal-written unity, Yano’s stylistics analysed official documents and it may be viewed as a sideline of the modern stylistics. Still, his stylistics should be re-evaluated as a critical alternative to the analysis based on verbal-written unity.

        Culture,Literature : A Style-based Approach to Translating Literary Texts from Arabic into English

        In this paper, a style-based approach to translating literary texts is introduced and used. The aim of the study is to work out a stylistic approach to translating literary text from Arabic into English. The approach proposed in the current study is a combination of four major stylistic approaches, namely linguistic stylistics, literary stylistics, affective stylistics and cognitive stylistics. It has been show from data analysis that by adopting a style-based approach that can draw from the four stylistic approaches, translators, as special text readers, can easily derive a batter understanding and appreciation of texts, in particular literary texts. Further, it has been shown that stylistics as an approach is objective in terms of drawing evidence from the text to support the argument for the important stylistic features and their functions. However, it loses of its objectivity and becomes dependent and subjective.

Giving reality of poetic circumstance through practical use of these dialect, is maximizing fidelity the circumstance enemy. In this way, dialect in Park mok-wol poetry has been filling self-consciousness for border of yearning life for origin, and limitedness self-satisfaction solitude that feel in old age.<BR>  Third, it is various the ending termination of a word"s variation. 《Dead leaves of Kyongsang Province》 expresses change branch of Book of Songs direction because there is Park mok-wol"s poetry. A noun style the ending termination of a word who speak for primitive compendiousness and resection beauty diminishes, and the ending termination of a word of Gusuljeok description style is used frequently relatively.         고석규 비평의 수사학적 연구 : 문체론(stylistics)을 중심으로

        This writing wished to make clear special quality by way of investigating Ko, Seok-Gyu's criticism in rhetorical viewpoint on the basis of important results of former study. This writing analyzed deeply text equivalent to stylistics among Ko, Seok-Gyu's criticism especially for this. Direction of Style is included to 'general theory of style'. Ko, Seok-Gyu's viewpoint about style can be summarized synthesis of epistemology and expression theory. He wishes to make clear style in viewpoint of physiology and psychology, and he discuss about tendency of psychologism of style. And after he discuss about gestalt psychology, correlate style with grammatical dimension of tense, aspect, mood, voice. Modern Poetry and Figure is included to 'poetic stylistics'. Ko, Seok-Gyu divides statement with pseudo-statement, and he points out that pseudostatement helps the similar imagination by analogy. He gives poetic privilege to intuition than analogy as he compares analogy with intuition. Ko, Seok-Gyu explains to dimension of 'statement' correlating 'simile' with 'analogy', while he explains to dimension of 'pseudo-statement' correlating 'metaphor' with 'intuition'. And he connects interest about figure with metaphysical effort. We can summarize that Ko, Seok-Gyu's poetic stylistics is 'pseudo-statement-intuition-metaphor and symbol-metaphysics'. Critic's style, Critic's culture, Critical Moral and Method is included to 'critical stylistics'. Ko, Seok-Gyu requests critic's style that means style that unify 'contents(universality)' and 'form(individual)'. Also he refers that 'self-injection' is requested in critic's style, and presents the power of conception as futuristic 'yearning' through past and present. Ko, Seok-Gyu's critical stylistics shows synthetic viewpoint which consider self-injection and yearning as well as contents and form of literature text. Ko, Seok-Gyu's criticism synthesizes organically two faces, that is poetic truth and poetic beauty, ideological element and emotional element, thought and expression, meaning and language. And his criticism is spreaded to dimension of action and utility exceeding dimension of moral and method.

        앙리 모리에의 심리문체론 원리와 방법 연구 : 『문체심리학』을 중심으로

        Our research aim is to describe, through the lecture of The Psychology of styles of Henri Morier (1959), a particular case of genetic stylistics called ‘psychological stylistics’ in which we can explain the stylistic features of artistic productions that return on writer and can be made of the psychological laws of style. This analysis of text corresponds to a very broad approach which was not uncertain in our study of stylistics. Thus to study stylistics of the person of Henri Morier, we took up the study into the concept of science of characters or characterology in the style, being closely related psychological traits of the individual moral notions of personality, temperament and character types, etc. We also knew that Morier theorized his stylistic method with the technique of rhetoric in opposition to linguistic and literary stylistics dating from early 19th century. He is a real stylistician and linguist who is interested in the style of an author and in the character of pesonnage. Even if we do not share this opinion, we agree that Morier``s works on stylistics of the person deserves special consideration.

        Digital media today requires multiple intelligence that can surpass existing text oriented media. In order to realize new ideal human being, the paradigm of educational academic world is getting changed. In other words, the goal of media education is to develop extensive ability not only related to text but also related to image and sound. This ability can be explained in the form of media literacy. One of the problems in current Korea media education is too much focus on the realization of creative human being in media education so that literacy education can be overlooked. The goal of this paper is to introduce the stylistic's viewpoint to media literacy. Literal text like media can be object of stylistics. In addition praxis of stylistics that consider the way of author's expression ability can understand the artistic form of media.

        코퍼스를 활용한 신소설 문체 분석 시론 : 『치악산』과 『홍도화』의 작가와 문체를 중심으로

        The objectives of this paper is to confirm 'Sinsosoel' authorship through quantitative approach to stylistics. In 1900s when the new form of novel, Sinsosoel emerged, matter of authorship was so complicated. There were a lot of cases that the author named in publisher's imprint was not a genuine one but other author or a publisher himself. Recent research examined this matter with bibliographical approach, for example looking through biography of the author and the publisher, and their relationship, or publication law and market condition in 1900s around. This research significantly contributed to confirm the authorship and the canon among different editions, however it tended to pay less attention to the internal property of a work. This paper starts from this point to argue stylistics should be considered in order to confirm authorship and canon. It is very important to select works for this purpose. Here works with separate volumes of different authors under one title were considered, because two totally different stories can distract us from tracing one author's typical styles. Under one story line, we can easily trace two different author's distinctive style from another. Chiaksan 1's author is recorded as Yi Injik whereas volume 2 is Kim Gyoje, and Hongdohwa 1's author is Yi Haejo whereas 2 is Min Junho or Namgung Min. This two works will be examined to confirm whether they are really written by two different authors and if yes, which distinctive styles they have. The tool for this examination is Sinsosel Corpus established by AKS(Academy of Korean Studies) 2009-2011. Frequency listed from computational treat to Corpus will play an important role to confirm this two works authorship and each author's style. This approach will lead stylistics study to more scientific level.

        김유정의 문체 실험과 구인회-「두꺼비」, 「생의 반려」에 드러난 박태원과의 유사성을 중심으로

        이 연구는 기존의 김유정 연구가 작가의 개성과 독자성에 집중되어 있어, 공시적인 관점에서 언급된 경향이 적었다는 점에 주목하였다. 이는 김유정이 구인회 활동을 해왔다는 참작하면 더욱 특기할 만하다. 따라서 이 연구는 구인회의 『시와 소설』에 실린 김유정의 「두꺼비」, 동일한 화소를 다루는 「생의 반려」와 구인회 문인들, 특히 박태원과의 문체적 유사성을 검토하는 데 목적을 두었다. 그 결과, 이 연구는 「두꺼비」가 세 가지 측면에서 기존의 문체적 자장을 위반하는 방향으로 작성되었음을 규명하였다. 그리고 이러한 세 가지 측면에서의 문체적 특징이 구인회 문인들의 언어적 실험과 지니는 유사성을 검토하였다. 아울러 「생의 반려」는 대개의 김유정 소설들처럼 양가적인 문체 전략을 채택하여 인물에 대한 가치 평가를 유보하는 방향으로 작성되었지만, 자유간접문체를 적용함으로써 박태원과 유사한 문체적 전략을 선보이고 있다는 점도 분석하였다. 이처럼 김유정의 두 텍스트가 보여주는 문체적 실험은 모더니스트들이 추구한 ‘방해의 미학’과 유사성을 갖는다. 따라서 이 연구는 김유정과 구인회 문인들과의 문학적 유사성을 문체론의 관점에서 접근했다는 데에서 의의를 갖는다. 이를 통해 김유정 문체 연구의 외연을 넓힐 수 있기를 기대한다. This study noted that Kim Yu-jeong's research was less likely to be conducted from a public perspective. This is because prior research has focused on the writer's personality and identity. This is even more special considering that Kim Yu-jeong has been working as a Guinhoe. Therefore, this study analyzes Kim Yoo-jung's 「Toad」 in Guinhoe's 『Poetry and Novel』 and 「Life's companion」dealing with the same motif. In particular, the purpose was to examine the similarities between the linguistic experiments of Kim Yu-jeong and Guinhoe writers. To this end, statistical style theory was used to examine similarities in terms of style. As a result, this study found that 「Toad」 was written in a direction that violated the existing stylistic boundaries in three aspects. In addition, the similarities between these three aspects and the linguistic experiments of the writers of Guinhoe were examined. In addition, it was revealed that 「Life's companion」 was written in the direction of reserving the valuation of characters by adopting an ambivalent style strategy like most Kim Yu-jeong novels. It was also mentioned that it is similar to Park Tae-won's style strategy by applying free indirect style. In this way, the stylistic experiments shown in Kim Yu-jeong's two novels can be named the ‘aesthetics of disruption’ pursued by modernists. Therefore, this study is significant in that it approaches the literary similarities between Kim Yu-jeong and Guinhoe writers from the perspective of statistical stylistics. Through this, we hope to expand the scope of research on Kim Yu-jeong's writing style.
