Assessing the Habitat Potential of Eurasian Otter (Lutra lutra) in Cheonggye Stream Utilizing the Habitat Suitability Index

Vol.37 No.2

The Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) is an apex predator of the riparian ecosystem. It is a keystone and an indicator species; consequently, its presence suggests a sustainable water environment. Otter is a keystone species as a predator at the top of the food web in the aquatic environment and an indicator species representing the health of the aquatic environment. Although Eurasian otters disappeared from the Han River urban water system because of anthropogenic activities like habitat destruction, poaching, and environmental pollution in the1980s, the species were sighted in the Cheonggye Stream, Jungrang Stream, and Seongnae Stream, which are urban sections of the Han River, in 2016 and 2021. Therefore, it is pertinent to assess the habitat potential in the area for conservation and management measures to ensure its permanent presence. However, existing studies on otter habitats focused on natural rivers and reservoirs, and there is a limit to applying them to habitats artificially confined habitats in narrow spaces such as tributaries in urban areas of the Han River. This study selected the Cheonggye Stream, an artificially restored urban stream, to evaluate its potential as a habitat for Eurasian otters in urban water environments using the habitat suitability index (HSI). The HSI was calculatedwith selected environment attributes, such as the cover, food, and threat, that best describe the L. lutra habitat. According to the results, the confluence area of Seongbuk Stream and Cheonggye Stream and the confluence area of Cheonggye Stream and Jungnang Stream were suitable otter habitats, requiring appropriate conservation efforts. The HSI model suggests a valuable method to assess the habitat quality of Eurasian otters in urban waterenvironments. The study is crucial as it can help rehabilitate the species’ populations by identifying and managing potential Eurasian otter habitats in highly urbanized areas of the Han River basin and its tributaries.

Ecosystem engineering influence of Mongolian marmots (Marmota sibirica) on small mammal communities in Mongolia

        Buyandelger Suuri,Otgonbayar Baatargal,Badamdorj Bayartogtokh,Richard P. Reading 국립중앙과학관 2022 Journal of Asia-Pacific Biodiversity Vol.15 No.2

Mongolian marmots (Marmota sibirica) live in colonies that consist of numerous burrows and are considered ecosystem engineers. Although once a common steppe species, marmots are now endangered due to overharvesting, which has led to concerns over the impacts of their loss on other species. The decline of marmots likely affected other species given their importance to the ecosystems they inhabit. To examine the role of marmots on small mammal, we established Sherman traps and drift fence arrays with associated pitfall and funnel traps on active marmot colonies, inactive colonies, and control sites in the forest-steppe and semi-desert zones of Mongolia. Overall, we identified 385 individuals representing 11 species of rodents and 1 species of bat in Ikh Nart and 149 individuals representing 2 species of rodents and 1 species of insectivore from Hustai. We found mixed results between diversity indices and abundance of small mammals on treatment and control sites, complicating the picture. During periods of greater precipitation and resulting higher vegetation cover, species abundance and the Shannon-Wiener, Simpson's, and evenness indices all changed significantly, suggesting that the effect of marmots on other species varies based on environmental conditions.

Vol.22 No.7

Since the early 1990s, the Korean government has induced cooperation between universities, research institutes, and companies within the same region for regional innovation and economic vitalization through small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). This industry-academic cooperation ecosystem, which has been running for over 25 years, has helped strengthen the technological competitiveness of early SMEs and revitalize the national economy. This ecosystem was built under the leadership of the Small and Medium Business Industry-Academic-Research Cooperation Center, and Startup Incubator established at universities and research institutes led by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups. These two organizations are key species in the ecosystem. On the other hand, the recent weakening of key species has negatively affected the ecosystem. This study suggests a strategy for the evolution of key species to sustain the industry-academic cooperation ecosystem. In conclusion, it is necessary to lead a new leap forward in core species by converting the pipeline strategy of single ministries into platform support projects of multi ministries.

      • How to Assess the Success of Restoration Planting

2005 Forest Science And Technology Vol.1 No.1

To investigate the assessment of restoration success, we reviewed assessment program design, attributes to be restored, indicators for success assessment and criteria for determining success. Assessing the success of a restoration project is needed to advance both restoration management itself and the development of the science of restoration ecology. The assessment is performed by measuring the attributes correlated with the ecosystem structure and function. The success or failure of a project can be determined by examining the similarity of the plantings to naturally regenerating forests and the resilience of the restored sites. However, determining the success or failure within a short-term frame is extremely difficult due to the absence of any standard criteria for judging the success of the project. When the success of a restoration planting project needs to be assessed within a short-term time frame, only the success potential can be predicted, not the future success of the restoration itself. Nevertheless, restoration planting practices still include many arbitrary decisions in areas such as the selection of keystone species and the improvement of survival rates. In addition, after the assessment process is completed the restoration still proceeds with a high degree of uncertainty. Thus, continual monitoring of the restoration planting and hypothesis testing of the plantings are recommended.

        김재훈(Jaehoon Kim),김범준(Beomjun Kim),박승철(Seungchul Park),김희갑(Hekap Kim),최재석(Jaeseok Choi) 국립공원연구원 2022 국립공원연구지 Vol.13 No.1

This research was conducted three times at 17 sites from May to October 2021 to determine the degree of restoration of the fish community. A total 4,624 of individuals were collected into 19 species belonging to 9 families. As a result of clustering of each site, the fish species of the Amur river stream system(Youngdong region) and the Yellow river stream system(Youngseo region) were grouped into a mixed group, indicating that the fish community was very disturbed. Especially, Brachymystax lenok tsinlingensis was regionally extinct in the past. But it regained its reputation in the past by habitat expanded from 14%(2004) to 86%(2021). Brachymystax lenok tsinlingensis is keystone species in the upper stream. Therefore it is expected to play an important role in the restoration of the upper stream fish community.

Vol.13 No.2

The purpose of this study is to present an evolutionary strategy for the survival of organizational groups within the changing environment of the Daejeon startup ecosystem. Organizational ecology and the theory of startup ecosystems are used to approach the startup ecosystem of Daejeon. As the research method focuses on selection by the environment in organizational ecology, the environmental variability of the Daejeon startup ecosystem is analyzed through various literature and data based on Isenberg's (2010) six elements of a startup ecosystem. In addition, the characteristics and commonalities of the "niche" and "variation" processes for survival in the ecosystem are derived through interviews with successful startups. The research results show that despite having the six elements necessary to create a healthy ecosystem, the Daejeon startup ecosystem has negative effects on organizational groups within the ecosystem due to a lack of human capital resulting from changes in government policy and continuous population outflow, as well as some inadequate support factors. Nevertheless, through successful startup cases, factors that can be niched, varied, selected, and conserved within the ecosystem have been discovered. In conclusion, a strategy for the evolutionary development of the ecosystem that can make organizational groups more robust, such as discovering successful startups that can create quality jobs and decentralized policies that can revitalize the region, is needed.
