영화작가로서 이창동은 장르적 자장 안에서 영화를 만들고 있는 한국영화계의 대다수 감독들과 구별된다. 그동안 그의 영화는 관객과의 소통을 위해 느와르, 멜로 등의 장르를 차용해왔지만 최근작 〈시〉에 이르러서는 장르적 외피를 벗어던진 것처럼 보인다. 〈초록물고기〉부터 〈시〉에 이르기까지 일관되게 남은 것은 관객의 참여를 요하는 깊은 심도와 시간의 연속을 암시하는 길게 찍은 숏들의 몽타주, 현실성을 강조한 연기 등 리얼리즘적 표현방식이다. 또한 이창동의 영화들은 환영적 동일시를 깨는 방식으로 관객들에게 성찰의 자리를 돌려준다는 측면에서 장르영화의 카운터 시네마로 파악할 수 있다. 이창동의 영화에서 볼 수 있는 ‘낯설게 하기’는 핸드헬드, 판타지, 미장아빔, 응시 되돌려 보내기 등의 영화적 장치로 구현된다. 이 장치들은 텍스트의 재현양식을 폭로함으로써 관객들이 역사적, 정치적 컨텍스트를 성찰하게 한다. 본 연구에서는 〈시〉,〈오아시스〉,〈밀양〉 등의 분석을 통해 이창동의 영화 만들기 행위는 결국 보이지 않는 ‘실재’를 상징화함으로써 ‘윤리를 창조하는 반복충동’이라고 주장할 것이다. As a film maker, Lee Chang Dong stands out from most Korean film makers who work within the trappings of genre films. To be sure, Lee has also used the trappings of genre films, such as noire and melodrama, but primarily as a tool to communicate with film audience. In his most recent film “Poetry”, Lee seems to have even stripped even the minimal trappings of genre film. Lee commands the audience to self-reflect and work towards their own conclusions by denying them the illusory identification on screen. In this way, Lee’s works are counter cinema. Lee achieves a distancing effect using such filmic apparatuses as hand-held camera, fantasy, mise en abyme, and returned gaze. Through these filmic apparatuses, Lee exposes the re-presentation of text and compels his audience to see the historical and political contexts of the text. In this study, I make the case that Lee Chang Dong’s film making is an act of repetition compulsion that cultivates ethical reflection, through symbolization of the invisible realities.

영화 〈공동경비구역 JSA〉의 공간재현 방식과 그 상징적 의미에 대한 일 고찰

오늘날 한국전쟁과 관련해 한국인들의 기억에서 고착된 의미를 가진 역사적 공간인 공동경비구역은 1950년 한국전쟁이 발발하고 1953년 휴전하기 까지 2년여 동안 그리고 60여년이 지난 현재까지 한반도의 전쟁과 분단으로 생성된 공간이다. 본 연구는 영화 〈공동경비구역JSA〉(2000)사례연구를 통해 이러한 한국 전쟁의 역사적 공간이 영화 미학적 장치를 통해서 어떻게 영화적인 공간으로 구성되고 어떠한 상징적 함의를 가지는지 고찰한다. 본 연구는 특히 영화 〈공동경비구역JSA〉에서 드러나는 주요 세 공간인 비무장지대와 공동경비구역, 그리고 북한군 초소를 각각 과거, 현재, 그리고 미래적 공간으로 개념화하고 이들이 제시하는 상징적 의미들이 한국 전쟁과 분단에 관한 우리의 집단 기억과 관련해서 어떻게 이해될 수 있는지 논의하였다. 사례 분석에 앞서 우선 판옵티콘과 헤테로토피아 등을 중심으로 하는 푸코의 공간 담론 논의와 영화적 공간 구성 관련 논의를 검토하였다. 구체적인 분석을 위한 방법론적인 개념으로는 영화적 장치들을 활용하였다. 분석 결과, 본 논문은 영화 〈공동경비구역〉에서 구성된 ‘과거’ 및 ‘현재’적 공간이 전쟁 후 고착화된 남북간의 이데올로기적 대립을 재확인하는 상징적 의미를 드러낸 반면, ‘미래’적 공간은 그러한 이데올로기적 대립을 초월해서 ‘공동경비구역’을 탈이념화하고 탈정치화시켜 우리 사회에 고착된 공적인 기억을 변형시켜 대항기억의 단초를 제시함을 논의하였다. As an ideologically loaded space, JSA(Joint Security Area) within DMZ(De-Militarized Zone), not only symbolizes the suspension of Korean War, but also reminds of us the tragedy caused by the country’s de facto partition for over sixty years. This study analyzes Chan Wook Park’s South Korean division film, Joint Security Area JSA(2000), arguing that the film put it into practice that the context of specific ideological determination is constructed with the cinematic apparatus through spatialization. This article categorizes spatial representations of the historical space in the film into three major symbolic implications; Past(Korean War, DMZ), Present(Suspension of War, JSA), and Future(unification, North Korean Guard Point). Textual analysis and Michel Foucault’s spatial discourse (Panopticon and Heterotopia) are thus implied in the discussion. We suggests that Joint Security Area JSA discerns the spatial discourse to transgress the collective memory of the space; formation of Heterotopia to evoke emerging discourses of new Korean identity, opening up the possibility of counter-memory.
