이 글은 한국 청년 세대 담론이 가진 남성중심적 한계를 극복하고 오늘 /여기 청년기 인구집단이 가진 다층성과 이질성을 포착하기 위해, 남성성 연구의 성과를 활용하여 청년 세대 담론의 젠더화를 시도한다. 최근의 청년 세대 담론은 청년층을 몰젠더적인 남성인 것처럼 표상하고, 그들의 위기와 좌절을 젊은 남성들이 표준화된 근대적 남성 생애주기 과제를 달성하기 어려워진 것에서 찾는 경향이 있다. 그러나 한국사회에서 정상가족의 표준이나 근대적 성별분업은 상당부분 이미 해체, 변형되고 있으며, 따라서 청년 세대에 대한 담론이 여전히 이것을 전제로 하고 있는 것은 불합리하다. 생애가족임금을 전제로 하는 ‘1인 생계부양자’와 근대적 핵가족이 약화되는 가운데 일상문화의 소비주의는 지속되고 있는 상황에서, 기존의 헤게모니적 남성성을 대체할 대안적 남성성은 등장하지 않고 있다. 최근 젊은 남성들 사이에 좌절과 불안, 분노를 더욱 증폭시키고 있는 요인을 여기서 발견할 수 있다고 본다. This paper aims to provide theoretical tools for gendering the discourse on the ‘young generation’ in Korea, using the language of masculinity studies. Most of the existing ‘young generation’ discourse tends to represent this generation as young men who are failing to achieve the tasks set for them in the standard male life-cycle script of the modern family. Difficulties in securing a stable income and employment and the subsequent impossibility of holding the position of ‘the sole breadwinner’ in the family are considered as the main causes of young people’s frustrations and crises. However, the standards of the normal family and modern division of labor by gender have been weakening in Korea since the Asian financial crisis of 1997, necessitating new visions for young people’s lives. However, as long as modern gender relations are reconstructed along the lines of the modern stereotype, while consumerist culture continues unchecked, no alternative masculinities that can replace the old hegemonic masculinity will appear. It is proposed that this is the main reason for the amplification of frustration and anxiety among young men in Korea today.
