        Korean English Teacher's Disempowerment in English-only Classes

The Sociolinguistic journal of Korea 18(1). In this case study, we have focused on the disempowerment of a Korean English teacher (KET) in English-only classrooms. Six English as a foreign language (EFL) classrooms in a Korean high school were observed and analyzed by using interpretive discourse analysis. Out of the six classes, three representative classrooms were both video- and audio-taped. The results show that the English-only classes could weaken the KETs' power via three mechanisms: (a) calling the KETs' last name for choral greetings at the beginning of the class, (b) students' group solidarity and peer pressure between classmates, and (c) the students' excessively collaborative approach to peer assistance. It is argued that the exclusive English-only instruction disempowers the KETs' status and dismantles their vocational identity. In order to remedy the current situation, within a scaffolding supported by the eclectic use of first language where necessary for effective class management, KETs are empowered and overcome constraints imposed by the limited L2 oral competence of some non-native English teachers.

        Background : In recent years, gonorrhea has been panedemic and remains one of the most commom STDs in the world, especially in developing countries. Objective & Methods: For the detection of a more effective therapeutic regimen and assessing the prevalence of PPNG, we have been trying to study the patients who have visited the VD Clinic of Choong-Ku Public Health Center in Seoul since 1980 by means of the chromogenic cephalosporin method. Results: In 1996, 139 strains of N. gonorrhoeae were isolated, among which 53(39.0%) were PPNG. Conclusion: Our results suggests that after a peak of 74.3% in 1993, the prevalence of PPNG in Seoul is gradually declining.

        In recent years, gonorrhea has been pandemic and remains one of the most common STDs in the world, especially in developing countries. For the detection of a more effective therapeutic regimen and assessing the prevalence of Penicillinase Producing Neisseria gonorrhoeae(PPNG), we have been trying to study the patients who have visited the Venereal Disease Clinic of Choong-Ku Public Health Center in Seoul since 1980 by menas of the chromogenic cephalosporin method. In 1998, 93 strians of N. genorrhoeae were isolated, among which 60(64.5%) were PPNG. The prevalence of PPNG in Seoul, which had been decreased to 39% in 1996 after a peak of 74.3% in 1993, is increased to 64.5% in 1998.

        The purpose of this paper is to redesign, compare, and study using bi-directional shape memory alloy spring to compensate for the shortcomings of the existing fire damper performance. Through the spring constant measurement experiment, using the difference in force between the coil spring and the shape memory alloy spring, the damper closes when the set temperature is reached, and opens again when the temperature is lowered. In addition, the internal structure was redesigned through smoke leakage experiments. As a result, semi-permanent usable dampers were modeled.

      • 유산양 유방염에 대한 Chitosan 약침의 치료 효과

        To improve the therapeutic method for mastitis, treatment effect of chitosan pharmacopuncture was examined in three milking goats(A,B and C). Mastitis was artificially induced in two milking goats(A and B) and one goat(C) was naturally infected case with mastitis. The acupoint used was Yang-Ming and chitosan suspensions(provided from Tottory University, Japan: 30㎎ of chitosan/㎖)were injected to the acupoint with 5㎖/time for 3 days, respectively. As for the change of somatic cells in milk along with chitosan pharmacopuncture, they showed a decreasing tendency after increase on the 3rd day in all udders of B. In addition, as for the change of total leukocyte counts of peripheral blood with chitosan pharmacopuncture, they showed a decreasing tendency after increase on the 3rd day in B and C except A which showed a increasing tendency until on the 7th day. In the change of neutrophil/lymphocyte(N/L) ratio, increasing tendency was seen in A and C but increasing tendency after slight decrease was observed in B. Further, in the change of serum total protein and A/G ratio, serum total protein content was decreased after slightly increase on the 3rd day in A, and they were decreased after increase until on the 7th day in B and C, respectively. As for the change of A/G ratio, different pattern increasing tendency was shown in A, B and C.

        The purpose of this study is to identify the thoughts on gymnastics in the Enlightening Period in the light of beginning and development of modern gymnastics of Korea with the conflict between traditional thoughts and the western thoughts. Therefore, I tried to clarify the process of the formation and development of Korean gymnastics in the fluctuation of the end of the Korean Empire by examining the thoughts on gymnastics of the pioneers in the Enlightening Period. As a method of study, Literature approach, the analysis of the newspapers of those days and academic journals was taken as a method of this study. the Ul-Sa Compulsory, Treaty necessitated the safety and restoration of Korea through the human resource development. So the education was focused on the balance of the wisdom, virtue and body, especially on the body by the Ui-Sun Kim, Chang-Yol Choi, Dong-jak Rew, and Il-Pyung Moon. And the term 'scientific gymnastics' was first used in the letter on purposes of the establishment of Korean Gymnastics Club. The learned discussed the gymnastics as the study or learning of the action and motion of human body. Il-Pyung Moon and Dong-Cho Lee introduced the eastern system of gymnastics with criticism on the lack of thoughts on gymnastics of Korea. Gun-Su Rew took the gymnastics as an individual science in the argument of Dae-Dong Department of Gymnastics. The conditions of the Korean Empire made the human resource development of Koreans urgent through the balanced development of head, heart and health and especially the health was focused on because the restoration of Korea was to be achieved through it.

Therefore, torque is increased because improve small size(1200rpm) Low-speed High torque type Air pressure Vane motor's quality of the material and special quality and do so that decelerate output and conclusion that consider and manufacture number of rotations and efficiency etc. Obtained results are summarized as follows: 1. Dust and corrosion can be reduced and 20% bulk of casing housing decreased by optimizing of alternated casing site. 2. Vane's wing optimum number is composed of 5 by Vane type wing and Gear Ratio's design choice and torque raised by eccentricity 28mm of rotor and cylinder and reduction of rpm (gear ratio 1/2.6). 3. Air pressure Vane motor's research and development connected with various output is judged that it is serious as for counter measure late.

      • 자동차 차체조립공정설계를 위한 시뮬레이션

        본 연구에서는 자동차의 차체조립공정설계를 위하여 FACTOR/AIM 및 자체 개발한 생산시스템 성능평가를 위한 시뮬레이션 프로그램을 이용하여 비교 연구하였다. 이를 위하여 먼저 자체에서 개발한 시스템성능 산정 방법으로 초기 해를 구하고 세부 생산라인의 고장 Data와 조립라인의 구성, 운반장비 등의 의 다양한 여건을 고려하기 위하여 FACTOR/AIM을 사용하였다. Data의 분석을 위하여 ExpertFit를 사용하였으며 초기 시스템 모델링 및 Data로 부터 목표 생산시스템을 만족하는 시스템을 단계별로 찾아가는 과정을 사용하여 최적 해를 구하였다. 본 연구에서 분석한 K회사의 경우 목표 생산량 70대/시간을 만족하기 위하여 4 차의 개선을 통하여 71.57대/시간의 생산라인을 구하였다. 본 연구에서 생산조립라인의 공정설계를 위한 시뮬레이션 과정을 실 예를 들어 제시하였으며 다른 제품의 생산공정분서에도 활용 가능하리라 생각된다.

      • 배기가스 재순환에 의한 실린더 및 피스톤 마모에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구

        The effects of recirculated exhaust gas on the wear of cylinder liner, piston and piston rings have been investigated by the experiment with a two-cylinder, four cycle, indirect injection disel engine operating at 75% load and 1600 rpm spped. For the purpose of comparison between the wear rates of two cylinders with and without EGR, the recirculated exhaust gas is sucked into one of two cylinders after the soot among exhaust emissions is removed by an intentionally designed cylinder-type scrubber equipped with 6 water injectors(A water injector has 144 nozzles of 1.0 mm diameter), while only the fresh air into another cylinder. These experiments are carried out on the fuel injection at a fixed 15.3˚BTDC timing. It is found that firstly the mean wear amount of cylinder liner with EGR is more increased in the measurement positions of the second half than of the first and the mean wear amoount without EGR is almost uniform regardless of measurement positions, secondly the wear rates of the first and second piston ring(compression ring) thickness with EGR are more than twice, but the wear rate of oil ring thickness without EGR is more increased than that with EGR, and finally the wear rate of piston skirt with EGR is a little bit increased, but the piston head diameter is rather increased owing to soot adhesion and corrosion wear, and especially larger with EGR.

      • Edward Hitchcock의 체육사상이 19C 미국 대학 체육에 미친 영향에 관한 연구

        본 논문은 최초로 미국 대학에서 체육 교수로 임명되어 19세기 미국 초기 대학체육에 선구자적 역할을 수행한 히치코크(Edward Hitchcock)의 체육사상과 업적을 중심으로 당시 미국 학교체육에 미친 영향을 탐구하고자 하였다. 체육에 대한 최초의 중요한 대학 프로그램은 암허스트 대학에서 시작되었으며, 히치코크는 체육학과의 철학에 대하여 "이 학과의 유일한 목적은 정상적 표준까지 신체적 건강을 유지시키는 것" 이라 하였으며, 대학 체육 프로그램에서 체육과 같은 과목을 포함하는데 대한 주된 이유는 학생들의 건강을 증진시키는데 대한 체육의 잠재력이었다. 히치코크는 체육수업에서 가벼운 체조, 행진, 달리기, 속보 들을 행하였으며, 이런 운동들은 처음 15분에서 20분으로 변경되었으며, 나머지 30분은 자발적인 운동으로 이루어졌다. 어떤 학생들은 무거운 기구를 사용했으며, 오래달리기, 댄스, 곤봉, 노래, 줄다리기, 공중돌기, 운동, 스포츠 또는 레크레이션을 위한 적당한 운동을 그들 자신이 하였다. 히치코크는 오늘날까지 사용하고 있는 두가지 수업방법을 발달시켰다. 하나는 체육수업에 참가할 학생들이 유니폼을 입는 것이며, 다른 하나는 수업에 반장의 이용이다. 하트웰과 세비지와 같은 반장들은 후에 유명한 체육가가 되었다. 대학 체육 프로그램에서 실내운동과 야외운동과 스포츠를 비교하면서 야외운동, 특히 스포츠의 중요성을 강조하였다. 이런 사상을 바탕으로 히치코크는 교내경기 형태의 경쟁을 위한 운동경기를 장려하였으며, 운동경기를 정규 체육수업에서 실시하여 발달시켰다. 19세기 후반기 체육방법상의 가장 중요한 발달은 체력 측정과 테스트의 방법이었다. 인체측정은 최초로 영국 체육가인 맥크라렌이 가슴둘레를 측정함으로써 시작되었으며, 히치코크는 체육과 관련하여 인체측정을 실시한 최초의 미국인이었다. 그가 행한 가장 당면한 혁신적 과제는 인간성장의 종단적 연구였다. 그가 인체측정학을 사용한 주된 목정은 평균 또는 이상적 대학생을 찾기 위해서였으며, 궁극적 목표는 학생들의 건강과 신체적 발달이었다. 히치코크는 몇 년간에 걸쳐 8개의 최초 측정 시리즈를 만들었다. 측정은 나이, 체중, 신장, 가슴둘레, 팔둘레, 전완둘레, 폐용적과 턱걸이의 8개 항목이었으며, 1861년부터 약 1880년까지 모든 학생들을 대상으로 실시되었다. 이상에서 히치코크의 체육사상과 프로그램은 수업방법과 내용면에서 종래의 체조 중심의 수업보다 진일보 하였음을 알 수 있으며, 특히 인체측정 분야에서의 선구적 역할과 측정항목과 측정방법의 개발에 지대한 공헌을 하였음을 알 수 있다.
