      • Valorization of pikliz: a spicy meal garnishment in Haitian cuisine

        James Louis-Jean,Debbie Sanon,Kevin Louis-Jean,Nicole Sanon,Ruthonce Stvil Louis-Jean,Michelle Luvy Thomas 한국식품연구원 2021 Journal of Ethnic Foods Vol.8 No.-

The biochemical process of fermentation (zymology) is widely practical for foods and beverages. This metabolic process involves microorganisms (bacteria) and their enzymes in the preparation and preservation of foods. Many studies have shown that fermented foods and beverages have various documented health benefits to humans, such as being high in vitamin b, and, among other benefits, having atherogenic and anticarcinogenic properties. This communication discusses the significance of fermentation in Haitian cuisine by focusing on pikliz—a spicy fermented meal garnishment that is widely popular among Haitian dishes. This analysis provides relevant information on Haitian cuisine while examining the underlying mechanisms, compositions, properties, nutritional values, and potential health benefits of pikliz. This spicy meal garnishment represents the regional, ethnic, and national identity of Haitians living in Haiti and abroad.

Indirect influence, lobbies interdependence and ecological protectionism

2015 JOURNAL OF ECONOMIC RESEARCH Vol.20 No.2

This paper analyzes the setting of sustainability standards, such as those recently implemented in Europe and in the United States, as a political compromise pressured by the lobbying of competing industries and under the indirect influence of ecologists. Using a common agency model of lobbying, we extend Yandle``s theory of `Bootleggers and Baptists`` of interdependence between interest groups. Paradoxically, the indirect and information-based influence of ecologists can lead to a less constraining standard. We show, in a context of trade liberalization, that this influence leads nonetheless to a tightening of standards in large countries.

Labor Market versus FDI Policies in GCC Countries: a Political Economy Approach

2019 JOURNAL OF ECONOMIC RESEARCH Vol.24 No.1

Labor market policies and FDI policy liberalization do not exhibit thesame pattern across GCC countries. For instance, according to datafrom the Fraser Institute, FDI policy liberalization tends to go hand inhand with labor market deregulation in Bahrain and Oman. This is notnecessarily the case for UAE, however. This paper develops a politicaleconomy model based on a common agency model of lobbying(Grossman and Helpman, 1994) and addresses these policy developmentsin GCC countries. It analyzes the setting of a reform towardsderegulating labor markets (ease of hiring and firing rules) as apolitical compromise pressured by the political influence of amultinational firm and national citizens. Adapting the commonagency model of lobbying to an autocratic setting, we show that groups’influence is not distortive for a specific number of national citizens. Our political economy framework also suggests that the sponsorshipsystem and its amendment helps explain the different patterns ofregulation across GCC countries.

Mental Health Interventions for Disaster Relief

Louis Downs 한국상담학회 2011 Journal of Asia Pacific counseling Vol.1 No.2

With increasingly devastating disasters occurring across the planet, it is imperative that a wider population of counselors be prepared for the eventuality of cataclysmic events happening within their region. It is also an avenue of service to be capable of volunteering whenever a disaster calls for an influx of counselors from foreign environs. However, this work requires specialized training. This article is intended to brief counselors on the basic skills required for disaster mental health relief. These skills include the ability to assess the five emotional reactions to traumatic situations – resilience, avoidance, underactivation, overactivation and psychosis - and the four skill sets that are needed for an effective response - active listening and assessment, motivational interviewing, activating, and grounding skills.

Suppression of Aluminum Corrosion in Lithium Bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide-based Electrolytes by the Addition of Fumed Silica

Louis, Hamenu,Lee, Young-Gi,Kim, Kwang Man,Cho, Won Il,Ko, Jang Myoun Korean Chemical Society 2013 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.34 No.6

The corrosion property of aluminum by lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) salt is investigated in liquid and gel electrolytes consisting of ethylene carbonate/propylene carbonate/ethylmethyl carbonate/diethyl carbonate (20:5:55:20, vol %) with vinylene carbonate (2 wt %) and fluoroethylene carbonate (5 wt %) using conductivity measurement, cyclic voltammetry, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. All corrosion behaviors are attenuated remarkably by using three gel electrolytes containing 3 wt % of hydrophilic and hydrophobic fumed silica. The addition of silica particles contributes to the increase in the ionic conductivity of the electrolyte, indicating temporarily formed physical crosslinking among the silica particles to produce a gel state. Cyclic voltammetry also gives lower anodic current responses at higher potentials for repeating cycles, confirming further corrosion attenuation or electrochemical stability. In addition, the degree of corrosion attenuation can be affected mainly by the electrolytic constituents, not by the hydrophilicity or hydrophobicity of silica particles.

Do Failure of Posterior Tibial Nerve Stimulation Precludes to Use Sacral Neuromodulation in Patient With Overactive Bladder?

        Louis-Paul Berthelot,Benoit Peyronnet,Jean-Nicolas Cornu,Annabelle Aublé,Elena Brassart,Pierre Bigot,Julie Carrouget 대한배뇨장애요실금학회 2019 International Neurourology Journal Vol.23 No.4

Purpose: To evaluate the outcomes of sacral neuromodulation (SNM) after failure of transcutaneous posterior tibial nerve stimulation (TPTNS) in patients with overactive bladder (OAB). Methods: A retrospective study was conducted in 3 university hospitals and included all patients with OAB and treated with SNM after TPTNS had been tried between October 2008 and May 2018. The primary endpoint was the proportion of definitive SNM device implantation in patients with 50% objective and/or subjective improvement after a test period (stage 1). The secondary outcomes of interest were changes of the number of diurnal voids and nocturia episodes per 24 hours between the end of TPTNS and the end of stage 1. Results: Overall, 28 of the 43 patients included achieved at least 50% objective and/or subjective improvement during stage 1 and underwent an Interstim II implantation (65.1%). The mean daytime frequency decreased significantly from 10.3/day at the end of TPTNS to 7.8 diurnal voids/day at the end of SNM stage 1 (P=0.01). The mean number of nocturia episodes decreased from 2.5/night at the end of TPTNS to 2.1/night at the end of stage 1, but this did not reach statistical significance (P=0.18). There was no other parameter significantly associated with response to SNM Conclusions: SNM might improve OAB symptoms in most patients who experienced no or poor efficacy with TPTNS. History of failed TPTNS should not preclude the use of SNM in OAB patients.

Benzotriazole as an electrolyte additive on lithium-ion batteries performance

2017 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.53 No.-

Liquid electrolyte consisting of 1 M LiPF6 in ethylene carbonate (EC)/dimethyl carbonate (DMC) and 0.1 wt% benzotriazole (BzTz) is studied in LiCoO2//graphite battery system at room temperature. Benzotriazole addition introduces excellent electrochemical stability (5.6 V vs Li) and good ionic conductivity properties at room temperature. Also, this electrolyte shows good cycling performance and better discharge capacities at high C-rates relative to the pristine electrolyte. Furthermore, the additive allows the formation of a good solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) per cyclic voltammetry (CV) examination. These specialized properties make this liquid electrolyte ideal for high power and high voltage applications.

Determinants of Cocoa Export and its Effects on Local Prices in Cameroon

Vol.30 No.3

Co-integration and Error Correction Model (ECM) was used to provide the evidence that the GDP, Export price and the Competitive Advantage could be the main determinants of Cameroon Cocoa export. The fluctuation in cocoa export price (exchange rate) plays a key role in deciding domestic price in that the cocoa product not exported has been supplied to domestic market and the excessive supply has made the domestic price drop significantly.
