Family Origin Names and Haplotypes of Y - DNA in Korean Population

The use of restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) has been proposed for the construction of a human genetic linkage map and also become a powerful tool in human population genetics. Human Y-chromosome which is haploid and paternally inherited is valuable for investigating male-mediated gene flow and for complement maternally based studies of mtDNA. We have studied 166 samples from 4 kinds of family origin names such as Kyungju Kim, Kimhae Kim, Chunju Lee and Milyang Park based on the 49aTaq 1 polymorphisms, and a total of 25 haplotypes were observed. The B, F, and I bands is observed in all haplotypes and haplotype showing A3, B, D2, D3, F, and I bands is common haplotype except for Chunju Lee. The result obtained are summarized as follows.

Objectives : To see if there were any differences in waist circumference reduction when certain variable such as age, sex, BFR(BFR; Body Fat Rate), PIBW(PIBW; Percent Ideal Body Weight), WHR(WHR; Waist Hip Ratio) and BMI(BMI; Body Mass Index) were given. Methods : Among outpatients who admitted to department of Oriental Rehabilitation Medicine, Jeon-Ju Oriental Medicine Hospital, Won-kwang University from August 2003 to september 2004, 89 obese patients were chosen and electroacupunture was practiced to these groups in order to treat abdominal obesity and waist circumference reduction. Results : There were no significant correlation between sex, age and waist circumference reduction. Compared to groups who had shown lower BMI, higher BMI groups have shown greater change in waist circumference reduction. As BFR increase waist circumference reduction tended to increase as well. Conclusions : From the above results, higher BMI groups had shown greater change in waist circumference reduction compared to lower BMI groups.
Comparative Studies on the Toxicity of Neoasozine in the Drosophila melanogaster subgroup

유기인제 살균제인 Neoasozine이 D. melanogaster에 미치는 독성과 돌연변이원성을 조사 하였다. Neoasozine은 D. melanogaster 발육단게상에 발육속도의 지연 및 생존율의 저하현상을 보여 강한 독성을 나타내었으나 attached-X법에 의한 반성치사 돌연변이는 검출되지 않았다. 그리고 D. melanogaster의 동포종들에 대한 독성검사에서는 D. simulans. D. sechellia, D. mauritiana가 비교적 낮은 Neoasozine 저항성을 가졌으며 D. melanogaster가 중정도, D. yakuba와 D. erecta가 비교적 높은 저항성을 나타내었는데 이는 D. melanogaster동포종들의 분화과정과 다소 연관성이 있는 결과였다. It is the purpose to investigate the toxic effects and mutagenicity by neoasozine, the organoarsenous fungicide, on D. melanogaster. Neoasozine was highly toxic on developmental stages of D. melanogaster, resulting in prolongation of the developmental time and lowering of the viability. However, neoasozine gave no significant mutagenic effects on the sex-linked lethal mutagenesis by the attached-X method. Then, neoasozine was orally fed to D. melanogaster subgroup in order to compare its toxic capacity. D. simulans, D. mauritiana and D. sechellia belong to a relatively low resistant-degree group. D. melanogaster belongs to middle group, and D. yakuba and D. erecta belong to a high group. These results are more or less connected with the differentiational processes of the D. melanogaster subgroup.

Tyrosine kinases, Src and spleen tyrosine kinase (Syk), play crucial roles in cell responses to platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) and may have their functional interactions. In this study, we focused on investigating the roles of Syk in the regulation of Src signaling in PDGF-mediated vascular cell responses. Migration, proliferation, and activity of kinases were determined in rat aortic smooth muscle cells (RASMCs). PDGF-BB (10ng/mL) induced the migration and proliferation of RASMCs, which were significantly inhibited by PP2 (10 ${\mu}$M) and piceatannol(30 ${\mu}$M), inhibitors of Src and Syk, respectively. The phosphorylation of Syk induced by PDGF-BB was abolished by PP2. PDGF-BB increased the co-association of the PDGF${\beta}$-receptor and the kinases, Src or Syk, and its maximal binding to Src was achieved in a shorter time than that to Syk. PDGF-BB stimulated the phosphorylation of p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase(MAPK) and extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) 1/2, which was inhibited by PP2 and piceatannol. PDGF-BB-induced proliferation and migration were inhibited by SB203580 (30${\mu}$M) and PD98059 (30 ${\mu}$M), inhibitors of p38 MAPK and ERK1/2, respectively. These result simply that Syk is regulated by Src kinase, which participates in migration and proliferation in response to PDGF-BB in RASMCs.

N-methyl-N′-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine(MNNG) and Ethidium Bromide(EtBr) were fed to Drosophila melanogaster in order to investigate their toxic capacity at developmental and adult stage, and potency for the induction of X-linked lethal mutation during the spermatogenesis. Both MNNG and EtBr were highly toxic at developmental and adult stage resulting in prolongation of the developmental time and lowering of the viability, and high mortality of adults as the dose increased. The toxic capacity of MNNG was fairly higher than EtBr in developmental stage but an reverse aspect in adult stage. In the induction of X-linked lethal mutation during the spermatogenesis, MNNG had more pronounced effect in the sperm and spermatid, and EtBr did in the spermatid and spermatocyte stage, respectively.

We investigated fecundities in egg capsules and sizes at 50% of group sexual maturities in female Rapana venosa in three different salinity concentration regions (S-1, S-2, and S-3). In three different salinities, egg capsule heights, the number of egg capsules and the number of eggs and embryos were remarkably increased with the increase of female shell heights (or ages) and also increased with the increase of salinity concentrations. Heights of egg capsules, the number of egg capsules and fecundities (the number of eggs and embryos) were the maximum at S-1 (Gwangyang Bay (average 31.5 psu)) and the minimum at S-3 (the upper reaches of Seomjin River (average 15.5 psu)). Total numbers of fecundities of R. venosa $individual^{-1}year^{-1}$ were about $1{\times}10^6$ at S-1 region, about $8{\times}10^5$ at S-2 region, and about $2{\times}10^5$ at S-3 region. Rates (50%) of individuals reaching first sexual maturities in three different salinity regions (S-1, S-2 and S-3) were over 50% in females measuring 7.1-8.0 cm in shell height (considered to be two years old), and 100% in those > 10.1 cm (considered to be five years old). Biological minimum sizes ($RM_{50}$) in females in three different regions are 72.0 mm SH at S-1 region, 70.9 mm SH at S-2 region, and 74.6 mm SH at S-3 region, respectively. Exceptionally, smaller individuals (considered to be one year old) were participated in reproduction.

The synthesis and characterization of carbon-supported PtRu nanoparticles were carried out by Impregnation and colloidal methods and products were compared with commercial carbon-supported PtRu. To confirm the characteristics of the synthesized PtRu nanoparticles, TEM (and EDX), XRD, and electrochemical analysis were performed to evaluate alloy formation, surface structure, chemical composition of the nanoparticles, and the electrocatalytic activity for methanol oxidation. The impregnation method was relatively easy and straightforward but the average particle size was in excess of 3 nm and the size distribution was broad. However, colloidal methods involved more complicated procedures and required a heat treatment to increase activity, resulting in an average particle size of up to 2.2~2.3 nm, The heating conditions used, to achieve a higher catalytic activity, were investigated. A simpler nanoparticle synthetic method that results in a small particle size and high activity without a heat treatment would be desirable.
