        Pretreatment with Lycopene Attenuates Oxidative Stress-Induced Apoptosis in Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells

        Human mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been used in cell-based therapy to promote revascularization after peripheral or myocardial ischemia. High levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) are involved in the senescence and apoptosis of MSCs, causing defective neovascularization. Here, we examined the effect of the natural antioxidant lycopene on oxidative stress-induced apoptosis in MSCs. Although H2O2 (200 mM) increased intracellular ROS levels in human MSCs, lycopene (10 μmM) pretreatment suppressed H2O2-induced ROS generation and increased survival. H2O2-induced ROS increased the levels of phosphorylated p38 mitogen activated protein kinase (MAPK), Jun-N-terminal kinase (JNK), ataxia telangiectasia mutated (ATM), and p53, which were inhibited by lycopene pretreatment. Furthermore, lycopene pretreatment decreased the expression of cleaved poly (ADP ribose) polymerase-1 (PARP-1) and caspase-3 and increased the expression of B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2) and Bcl-2-associated X protein (Bax), which were induced by H2O2 treatment. Moreover, lycopene significantly increased manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) expression and decreased cellular ROS levels via the PI3K-Akt pathway. Our findings show that lycopene pretreatment prevents ischemic injury by suppressing apoptosis-associated signal pathway and enhancing anti-oxidant protein, suggesting that lycopene could be developed as a beneficial broad-spectrum agent for the successful MSC transplantation in ischemic diseases.

        The present paper is part of a larger case study of a 5 1/2 year old Korean boy, Colwyn, with his mother, Dr. Bae. Dr. Bae interviewed Colwyn twice, about 2 months apart; the first interview was audiotaped, the second videotaped. The present paper is based primarily on the second interview where Colwyn tells several wildly imaginative stories of himself like a superhero “protecting mom and dad.” Our aim is to communicate a sense of Colwyn’s “feeling, consciousness, state” when he is telling these “stories”, using the portraiture philosophy of Lawrence-Lightfoot and Davis and the “Participant-as-ally - Essentialist portraiture” approach of Witz and his students. The paper suggests that Colwyn’s “telling stories” in that Interview involves a highly self-actualized way of “being involved with his ‘I’”, which was apparently prompted by Interview 1 and is expressed in the drawing in Fig. 1. (In Interview 2 he constantly comes back to this drawing and uses it as a jumping off point for ideas in the stories). In addition, when he is telling a story, his whole being (feeling and mind) is “as if flowing in a direct channel,” manifesting as a constant stream of inspiration (creativity), ideas and diverse kinds of energy which is coming from within him, and that is carried on a powerful undercurrent of moral feeling of “being good.” At the same time telling the story represents a state of “subjectively being in a unity with” his mother’s feelings of appreciation and love. These things represent intense genuine spiritual engagement that at the same time manifests itself as creative expression in painting and in verbal interaction, already at this young age. This conclusion is supported by various additional data available.

      • 동종 반월상 연골 이식술의 임상적 결과 - 내측과 외측 및 동반 손상의 유무에 따른 비교 -

        목적: 동종 반월상 연골 이식술의 결과를 내측과 외측 및 동반손상 유무에 따라 비교하고자 하였다. 대상 및 방법: 1999년 12월부터 2007년 6월까지 동종 반월상 연골 이식술을 시행하고 1년이상 추시가 가능했던 52례를 대상으로 하였다. 내측 이식군은 19례, 외측 이식군은 33례였고, 단독 손상군은 18례 동반 손상군은 34례였다. 평균나이는 34.2세(18세~51세) 평균 추시기간은 42.2개월(12개월~90개월)이었다. 임상적 결과의 판정을 위하여 슬관절 운동범위, VAS 점수, IKDC 주관적 평가 점수, Lysholm 점수, Tegner 점수, 환자 만족도 및 이차 관절경 또는 추시 MRI를 시행하였다. 결과: 수술 후 평균 관절운동 범위는 130.3도 였다. VAS 점수는 수술 전 5.96점에서 3.05점으로, IKDC 주관적 평가 점수 46.5점에서 64.52점으로(p<0.001), Lysholm 점수는 61.94점에서 79.58점으로(p=0.0019) Tegner점수는 수술 전 2.97에서 3.62점으로 향상되었으며 수술의 만족도는 '매우만족', '대체로 만족'이라고 대답한경우가 61.5% 였다. 수술 후임상적 점수의 향상이 있었지만 내측과 외측 이식술 군간 그리고 단독 손상군과 동반 손상군 간의 통계적 유의한 차이는 없었다. 이차 관절경을 시행한 18례중 10례에서 이식된 동종 반월상 연골의 변연부의 치유 소견이 관찰되었고 6례에서 부분파열이 2례에서는 복합 파열이 관찰되었다. 추시 MRI 촬영이 가능하였던 16례에서 아탈구는 12례에서 관찰되었다. 결론: 반월상 연골 이식술 후 내측과 외측 이식군 간의 임상적 결과는 차이가 없었으며 동반된 연골 손상이나 불안정성에 대한 치료를 병행한 경우 동반손상의 유무는 결과에 영향을 미치지 않았다. Purpose: To compare the clinical outcomes after meniscus allograft transplantation between lateral and medial or isolated and combined procedure groups. Materials and Methods: Of the patients who had undergone arthroscopic meniscal allograft transplantation between Dec. 1997 and Jun. 2007, 52 patients were available for retrospective evaluation. Patients were grouped into lateral(33 cases) and medial(19 cases) transplant groups as well as those with isolated(18 cases) and combined(34 cases) procedure. The average age was 34.2 years and the mean follow-up period was 42.2 months. Postoperative range of motion (ROM), visual analog scale (VAS), International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) subjective score, Lysholm score, Tegner score, patient's subjective satisfaction, $2^{nd}$ look arthroscopy and MRI were evaluated retrospectively. Results: Mean postoperative ROM was $130.3^{\circ}$. The VAS showed an improvement from 5.96 to 3.05 at the last follow up. IKDC subjective score and Lysholm score also showed an improvement from 46.5 to 64.5 and from 61.9s to 79.58 respectively. Tegner score was improved from 2.9 to 3.6. Overall, 61.5% of patients reported they were completely or mostly satisfied with procedure. There were no significant differences noted between lateral and medial groups as well as isolated and combined groups. In 2nd look arthroscopy, 10 of 18 cases showed good pheripheal healing and there were 6 cases of partial and 2 of complex tear. We observed graft subluxation or extrusion in 12 of 16 cases who were evaluated with follow-up MRI. Conclusion: Meniscus allograft transplantation alone or in combination with other procedure showed an improvement in knee pain and clinical score. But there were no significant difference between lateral and medial groups or isolated and combined procedure groups.

        Preparation and Luminescence Properties of PDPGreen Phosphors using Polymer Matrix Technique

        The Zn2SiO4:Mn phosphors were prepared using polymer matrix technique in order to improve the performance of green emitting phosphors for plasma display panel(PDP). Zn2SiO4:Mn phosphor exhibits a strong green emission around 520-530 nm. The emission intensity and particle size of powders were controlled by sintering temperature and raw material composition. The zinc silicate Zn2SiO4:Mn single phase were obtained at lower temperature than prepared by solid-state reaction method. PL luminance of Zn2SiO4:Mn phosphor was similar to the commercial material.

        Non-Lithographic Growth of Core–Shell GaAs Nanowires on Si for Optoelectronic Applications

        <P>We demonstrated a nonlithographic method for integrating GaAs nanowire (NW) array-based light-emitting diodes (LEDs) on silicon (Si) substrates. A sub-100 nm hole array on a deposited SiO<SUB>2</SUB> layer was patterned on an entire 2 in. Si wafer based on a sacrificed self-assembled InAs NW array. Then, a core–shell <I>n</I>–<I>p</I> junction GaAs NW array was grown on exposed Si windows via the selective-area growth method. The electrical properties of the core–shell <I>n</I>–<I>p</I> junction GaAs NW has been measured and compared to those of the core–shell junction NWs formed via the self-assembled growth method. Room temperature electroluminescence was successfully observed from the fabricated GaAs NW array-based LEDs. The core–shell junction III–V NW array epitaxially grown on a ubiquitous Si platform could be applied to future low-cost optical devices.</P><P>We demonstrated a nonlithographic method for integrating GaAs nanowire (NW) array-based light-emitting diodes on Si.         Mobile Human Network Management and Recommendation by Probabilistic Social Mining

        <P>Recently, inferring or sharing of mobile contexts has been actively investigated as cell phones have become more than a communication device. However, most of them focused on utilizing the contexts on social network services, while the means in mining or managing the human network itself were barely considered. In this paper, the SmartPhonebook, which mines users' social connections to manage their relationships by reasoning social and personal contexts, is presented. It works like an artificial assistant which recommends the candidate callees whom the users probably would like to contact in a certain situation. Moreover, it visualizes their social contexts like closeness and relationship with others in order to let the users know their social situations. The proposed method infers the social contexts based on the contact patterns, while it extracts the personal contexts such as the users' emotional states and behaviors from the mobile logs. Here, Bayesian networks are exploited to handle the uncertainties in the mobile environment. The proposed system has been implemented with the MS Windows Mobile 2003 SE Platform on Samsung SPH-M4650 smartphone and has been tested on real-world data. The experimental results showed that the system provides an efficient and informative way for mobile social networking.</P>
