It was reported that hepatic aldehyde dehydrogenase(ALDH) activity was depressed in alcoholic liver diseases, however there was few report that explain the reason of depressed ALDH activity. We have attempted to correlate the decrease of hepatic ALDH activity with the active oxygen species which generated at elevated rates in the proliferated microsomes by chronic ethanol feeding. The susceptibilities of the hepatic ALDH activity to active oxygen generated by xanthine-xanthine oxidase system and FeSO₄-H₂O₂ system were studied. Incubation of ALDH with 2×10³ xanthine oxidase for 30 min at 25℃ resulted in the decrease of enzyme activity to 60%, and 55% of ALDH activity was retained after exposure to FeSO₄4-H₂O₂ system for 20 min. Alteration in the ALDH activity after administration of ethanol in rat liver was investigated. Whereas the mitochodrial ALDH activity was increased, the microsomal activity was depressed in ethanol-treated rat. Induced microsomal ALDH activity was observed by treatment of phenobarbital or 3-methylcholanthrene in the liver of rats chronically fed alcohol. Since the ALDH catalyses the oxidation of a wide variety of aliphatic and aromatic aldehydes, it is suggested that the alteration in the ALDH activity by various factors including the active oxygen affects the physiological states of liver administrated ethanol chronically, which may in turn to lead to liver disease.

We have compared the anti-proliferative effects of ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA), chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA) and their derivatives, HS-1183, HS-1199 and HS-1200, on MCF-7 (wild-type p53) and MDA-MB-231 (mutant p53) cells. While UDCA and CDCA exhibited no significant effect, their novel derivatives inhibited the proliferation of both cell lines in a concentration-dependent manner, concomitant with apoptotic unclear changes and the increase of a sub-G1 population and DNA fragmentation. Furthermore, we also observed an increase in the ratio of pro-apoptotic protein Bax to anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-2 and cleavages of lamin B and poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) in MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 cells. Cell cycle related proteins, cyclin D1 and D3, as well as retinoblastoma protein (pRb) were down-regulated, while the level of cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor p21^WAFI/CIPI was increased in both cancer cells after treatment with novel bile acids. These findings suggest that these cytotoxic effects of novel bile acid derivatives on human breast carcinoma cells were mediated via apoptosis through a p53-independent pathway. ⓒ 2001 Elsevier Science Ireland Ltd. Familial adenomatious polyposis (FAP) includes early development of up to thousands of colorectal adenoma and of coloaic adenocarcinoma in all untreated cases. Moreover, a variety of extracolonic manifestation are seen. Several reports have demonstrated a high incidence of gastroduodenal polyps in FAP patient. Fundic gland polypois is found in half of polyposis patient, It is an non-geoplastic condition with hundreds of sessile polyps in the gastric fundus consisting of cystic dilated fundic glands without epithelial dyeplasia, In western countries, gastric adenoma and carcinoma are rare findings in FAP patients. Until present time, only 2 cases in western countries and 8 cases in Japanese series were reported in literature. So it is generally suggested that the development of gastric carcinoma is related not only to racial and environmental factors, but also to a genetic effect, this may be the first case-report in Korea. Here we report the case with familial adenomatous polyposis, presenting with gastric and colonic adenocarcinoma.

The most common sites of pyogenic granuloma are the gingiva, finger, lips, face, and tongue. Gastrointestinal involvement is very rare and there were only 2 reported cases in world literature which showed involvement of the esophagus and ilem with each other. However, there was no reported case involving the lower gastrointestinal mucosa and showing resurrence in the gastrointestinal mucosa after local excision. We experienced a case of recurrent pyogenic granuloma of the rectum in a 36-year-old woman who had tenesmus and intermittent rectal bleeding. We report this case with a review of the literature.

개별차원의 긍정적 행동지원이 특수학교 유치부 청각장애 유아의 과제이탈 행동에 미치는 영향

이 연구에서는 개별차원의 긍정적 행동지원이 청각장애 유아의 과제이탈 행동에 미치는 영향에 대해 살펴보았다. 이를 위해 1명의 청각장애 유아를 선정하였으며, 미술 활동, 주제 활동, 방과후 활동 총 세 개의 교실 상황을 관찰하는 상황간 중다 기초선 설계(multiple baseline design across settings)를 실시하였다. 본 연구는 기능적 행동평가를 통해 유아의 활동지 훼손하기, 물건 던지기, 입에 물건 넣기를 과제이탈 행동으로 정의하고, 개별차원의 긍정적 행동지원을 적용하였을 때 과제이탈 행동이 어떻게 변화하는지를 관찰하였다, 연구 결과, 청각장애 유아에게 개별차원의 긍정적 행동지원이 과제이탈 행동이 감소하는 효과가 있는 것으로 나타났으며, 중재 종료 후에도 과제이탈 행동이 감소하는 효과가 유지되었다. 본 연구에서는 개별차원의 긍정적 행동지원의 중재효과와 후속 연구에 관한 방향을 제시하였다. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the individualized positive behavior support on off-task behavior of a kindergarten child with hearing impairment. The participant was a kindergaten child with hearing impairment in a special school. The study utilized multiple baseline design across settings: art activities, theme activities, and after-school activities. Through the functional behavior assessment, the problem behavior was identified as off-task behavior: damaging work sheets, throwing things away, and putting things into the mouth. The findings from the study indicated that individualized positive behavior support was helpful reducing off-task behaviors of a kindergarten child with hearing impairment during both intervention and maintenance phase. The implication included the effects of individualized behavior support and the guidelines for future research.

Previous studies indicate that BF-7 enhances learning and memory in normal and elderly individuals. Here, we evaluated whether milk containing BF-7 (BF-7 milk) could improve the brain function, with thirty normal university students $(21{\pm}1.2 years)$. Two versions of the Paced Auditory Serial Addition Test were used under double-blinded conditions to measure the efficacy of BF-7 milk on learning and memory, especially working memory and attention, and on mathematical ability. As a result, BF-7 milk improved the accuracy of the task more than 3-fold. Furthermore, BF-7 milk protected cultured neuronal cells from 3-hydroxykynurenine, a normal endogenous brain stress agent. These results indicate that BF-7 milk enhances memory, attention and mathematical ability in normal persons.
