Activation of invariant natural killer T cells stimulates adipose tissue remodeling via adipocyte death and birth in obesity

Park, Jeu,Huh, Jin Young,Oh, Jiyoung,Kim, Jong In,Han, Sang Mun,Shin, Kyung Cheul,Jeon, Yong Geun,Choe, Sung Sik,Park, Jiyoung,Kim, Jae Bum Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press 2019 Genes & development Vol. No.

In this study, Park et al. set out to elucidate the mechanism by which adipose-resident invariant natural killer T cells (iNKT) cells impact adipose tissue remodeling in obesity. Using in vitro and ex vivo approaches, the authors found that, in obesity, adipose iNKT cells can kill hypertrophic and pro-inflammatory adipocytes via FasL-Fas-dependent apoptosis, thus providing new insight into the role adipose iNKT cells play in promoting healthy adipose tissue remodeling.

In obesity, adipose tissue undergoes dynamic remodeling processes such as adipocyte hypertrophy, hypoxia, immune responses, and adipocyte death. However, whether and how invariant natural killer T (iNKT) cells contribute to adipose tissue remodeling are elusive. In this study, we demonstrate that iNKT cells remove unhealthy adipocytes and stimulate the differentiation of healthy adipocytes. In obese adipose tissue, iNKT cells were abundantly found nearby dead adipocytes. FasL-positive adipose iNKT cells exerted cytotoxic effects to eliminate hypertrophic and pro-inflammatory Fas-positive adipocytes. Furthermore, in vivo adipocyte-lineage tracing mice model showed that activation of iNKT cells by alpha-galactosylceramide promoted adipocyte turnover, eventually leading to potentiation of the insulin-dependent glucose uptake ability in adipose tissue. Collectively, our data propose a novel role of adipose iNKT cells in the regulation of adipocyte turnover in obesity.

      • Prebiotic Food Starch Characteristics and Materialization for “Dodamssal”

        Jiyoung Park,Sea-Kwan Oh,Hyun-Jung Chung,Hyun-Jin Park,Hye Young Park,Hye-Sun Choi,Hong-Sig Kim 한국식품영양과학회 2021 한국식품영양과학회 학술대회발표집 Vol.2021 No.10

Resistant starch (RS), a type of prebiotic, presents various functions, such as increasing satiety, improving colon environment, blood sugar and insulin response, and reducing and maintaining weight. Most rice cultivars comprise less than 1% of RS, whereas “Dodamssal” (DDS) contains about 10% in white rice. In this study, we aimed to elucidate the starch characteristics in various rice cultivars with different amylose contents developed by the National Institute of Crop Science and enhance use of RS-containing DDS brown rice as a health-promoting low-glycemic-index (GI) food. Non-digestible starches (NDS) and native starches (NS) were isolated from four rice cultivars: Baegokchal (BOC), Ilmi (IM), Mimyeon (MM), and DDS. MM- and DDS-derived NS showed high amylose and low rapidly digestible starch contents as well as high slowly digestible starch and RS proportions. The BOC, IM, and MM starch crystals showed A-type X-ray diffractometry patterns. However, the DDS granules displayed a C-type crystallinity pattern with a predominant B-type and convex spherical shape. All the IM and BOC starches were hydrolyzed, with no remaining NDS residues. MM and DDS NDS showed longer average amylopectin chain length but lower molecular weight and viscosity than the NS. The DDS starch had the lowest digestibility and highest RS content, showing its potential to prevent obesity and hyperglycemia. Roasting conditions, which increase the RS content in DDS, were explored in the 180∼300°C and 10∼30 min ranges. We compared the intermediate-amylose ‘IM’ and high-amylose ‘Goami4’ and ‘DDS’ cultivars. The IM RS content was not significantly different before and after roasting. The Goami4 RS content was significantly higher before roasting and significantly lower at temperatures above 210°C than that of DDS (P<0.05). The starch hydrolysis index and expected GI (eGI) were higher in the following order: IM, Goami4, and DDS, regardless of the roasting treatment. The sensory evaluation for color, flavor, bitter taste, and sweetness yielded high scores for DDS at 240°C for 10 min and 210°C for 30 min. The results indicate that DDS is a suitable cultivar for low-GI powder meal preparation. Upon analyzing the roasted DDS and 60∼200 mesh-passed brown rice flour (BRF) quality characteristics, the average particle size, hydrolysis index, and eGI showed significantly lower values for DDS than for Ilpumbyeo (P<0.05). The DDS RS content was 13% regardless of standard sieve or particle size. Therefore, we concluded that DDS is a valuable health food, as it is easily ground evenly when processed into BRF, contains RS, and has a low eGI. To improve the DDS BRF quality and establish the processing protocol, we steamed rough rice (SRRD) and brown rice (SBRD) for 30 min, then dried and roasted them at 240°C for 10 min. The particle size, crystallinity, thermal properties, RS content, and BRF digestion rate were compared with those of similarly treated IM (SRRI) and single-roasted DDS (RD). In the case of SRRI and SBRD, exhibiting a high order of gelatinization degree, significant differences with large average particle size, high digestion rate, and eGI, as well as low RS content were observed (P<0.05). SRRD showed significant differences in the fine powder particle distribution range with the highest proportion, RS content, and low eGI, although the gelatinization degree increased compared with RD (P<0.05). Therefore, SRRD, with improved BRF quality, could be potentially used as a carbohydrate source for developing functional powdered food for health improvement.

Assessing South Korea's Compliance with Global Norms on Development Cooperation

        Jiyoung Hong(Jiyoung Hong),Heon Joo Jung(Heon Joo Jung),Hyuk-Sang Sohn(Hyuk-Sang Sohn),Geonwoo Park(Geonwoo Park) 한국학술연구원 2022 Korea Observer Vol.53 No.4

Over the last f ive decades, the UN and OECD/DAC have strongly urged member states to comply with global aid norms to improve aid effectiveness. To what extent are the global aid norms actually put in practice in countries that have pledged themselves to comply with these norms? Norm life cycle theory explains the internalization of global norms as legalization, institution-building, and official policies at the national level. This study supplements the norm lifecycle theory by subdividing the process of norm internalization into the policy formation stage and the post-implementation stage at the national level and empirically examines it by employing five criteria: ODA/GNI ratio; aid to LDCs; the ratio of grant to loan; aid-untying; and fragmentation. The results show that some aid norms are well accepted and implemented at both stages while other norms are neither addressed in official aid policies nor put into practice.

Who are the Assistant Cooks at the Community Child Centers in South Korea? Focus Group Interviews with Workfare Program Participants

        Jiyoung Park,Chongwon Park,Sanghee Kim,Gill A. Ten Hoor,Gahui Hwang,Youn Sun Hwang 한국아동간호학회 2020 Child Health Nursing Research Vol.26 No.4

Purpose: Community child centers (CCCs) were introduced to provide after-school activities and care, including meal services to children from low-income families. The assistant cooks, who have the main responsibility for making and serving food at CCCs, are a major factor influencing the eating habits of children using CCCs. In this study, we tried to identify and understand who the assistant cooks are, what their job responsibilities are, and what they need in order to be able to provide children with healthy meals. Methods: Three focus group interviews were held with 17 workfare program participants who worked as assistant cooks at CCCs, and content analysis methods were applied using the NVivo 12 qualitative data analysis software. Results: The assistant cooks reflected on their perceptions of the children's health at the CCCs, their own cooking style, and their role at the CCCs. Additionally, barriers to the optimal provision of their services were pointed out, and improvements were suggested. Conclusion: The results of this study can be used as a fundamental resource for the development of tailored interventions that consider a child's unique environment to address health disparities, specifically with respect to childhood obesity.

      • A Study on Appropriate Correlated Color Temperature and Illuminance in Reading according to Different Paper Characteristics

        Jiyoung Park,Jinsook Lee,Eunji Seo,Chanung Jeong 대한인간공학회 2014 대한인간공학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2014 No.5

This study assessed ‘appropriate for the act’, ‘comfortable’ and ‘preferred’ for reading in order to get optimum temperature and illuminance range by quality of paper (i.e. whether or not the paper is glossy) and paper color. The work space was presented with the seven color temperatures of 3,000 K, 3,500 K, 4,000 K, 4,500 K, 5,000 K, 5,500 K, and 6,000 K. And seven illumanance of 100 lx, 150 lx, 200 lx, 300 lx, 400 lx, 600 lx, and 800 lx were presented on the work space. Target papers are white glossy A4 paper, white matte A4 paper, and yellowish matte A4 paper, with 10pt black letters equally printed on all of the three. The study has shown that for glossy paper, 5000 to 5500 K at 400 lx were evaluated as highest in ‘appropriate for the act, comfortable, and preferred’. For matte paper, regardless of paper color, 5000 to 6000 K at 600 lx was found as highest in all of ‘appropriate for the act, comfortable, and preferred’. Glossy paper seems to be more appropriate with low illuminance compared to matte paper. Also, for both glossy and matte papers, high color temperature of minimum 5,000 K is appropriate for reading.

      • Graphene quantum dots: structural integrity and oxygen functional groups for high sulfur/sulfide utilization in lithium sulfur batteries

        Park, Jungjin,Moon, Joonhee,Kim, Chunjoong,Kang, Jin Hyoun,Lim, Eunhak,Park, Jaesung,Lee, Kyung Jae,Yu, Seung-Ho,Seo, Jung-Hye,Lee, Jouhahn,Heo, Jiyoung,Tanaka, Nobuo,Cho, Sung-Pyo,Pyun, Jeffrey,Caban Nature Publishing Group 2016 NPG Asia Materials Vol.8 No.-

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are expected to overcome the limit of current energy storage devices by delivering high specific energy with low material cost. However, the potential of Li-S batteries has not yet been realized because of several technical barriers. Poor electrochemical performance is mainly attributed to the low electrical conductivity of the fully charged and discharged species, the irreversible loss of polysulfide anions and the decrease in the number of electrochemically active reaction sites during battery operation. Here, we report that the introduction of graphene quantum dots (GQDs) into the sulfur cathode dramatically enhanced sulfur/sulfide utilization, yielding high performance. In addition, the GQDs induced structural integrity of the sulfur-carbon electrode composite by oxygen-rich functional groups. This hierarchical architecture enabled fast charge transfer while minimizing the loss of lithium polysulfides, which is attributed to the physicochemical properties of GQDs. The mechanisms through which excellent cycling and rate performance are achieved were thoroughly studied by analyzing capacity versus voltage profiles. Furthermore, experimental observations and theoretical calculations further clarified the role played by GQDs by proving that C-S bonding occurs. Thus, the introduction of GQDs into Li-S batteries will provide an important breakthrough allowing their use as high-performance and low-cost batteries for next-generation energy storage systems.
