Objective To develop a set of reference standards for tibial motor, common peroneal motor, sural sensory, and superficial peroneal sensory nerve conduction studies (NCSs) with expanded uncertainty in a healthy Korean population.Methods Standardized procedures were conducted for individual lower extremity NCSs of 199 healthy participants in their 20s (n=100) and 50s (n=99). Mean values and expanded uncertainties for parameters were analyzed with thorough consideration of multiple uncertainty factors under the International Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement. In addition, side-to-side differences in onset latency, amplitude, and nerve conduction velocity (NCV) were analyzed.Results Mean (reference range) for distal onset latency, baseline to negative peak amplitude, NCV of tibial motor nerve in males in their 20s were 4.3 ms (3.1–5.4 ms), 7.1 mV (3.4–10.9 mV), and 50.7 m/s (42.2–59.3 m/s), respectively; sural sensory nerve baseline to negative peak amplitude in males in their 20s was 21.7 μV (8.3–35.2 μV). Including the aforementioned data, we present a vast dataset of normative mean values and expanded uncertainties for NCSs of the leg in a healthy Korean population. Furthermore, upper limits for normal side-to-side differences for onset latency, amplitude, and NCV of each nerve are suggested.Conclusion To our knowledge, this is the first study to present the reference standards of leg NCSs with consideration for multifactorial uncertainties in an Asian population. We expect these results to help practitioners make reliable and reproducible clinical decisions.

‘옥매(Okmae)’는 ‘도요노까(Toyonoka)’를 모본으로 하고 ‘매향(Maehyang)’을 부본으로 하여 교배하여 과실품질이 우수하고 화방당 화수가 적당하여 적과노력이 절감되는 특성에 근거하여 선발한 촉성재배용 품종이다. 2006년 초세가 왕성하며 당도와 경도가 높고 대과형인 96-2번 개체를 선발, 2007-2009년에 촉성재배작형으로 특성검정과 생산력 검정을 수행하여 ‘경남 1호’로 계통명을 부여하고 농가실증 시험을 거쳐 ‘옥매’로 명명하였다. ‘옥매’의 주요 특성은 초세가 왕성하고 초형은 직립형으로 엽수는 적으며 엽형은 타원형이다. 화경장은 길고 화방당 화수는 9-10개로 적어 적과 노력이 적게 든다. 과형은 원추형이며 과색은 선홍색으로 광택이 있다. 주당 수확과수는 21.9개로 적지만 대과의 비율이 높고 평균과중이 26.0g으로 무거워 다수확이 가능하다. 당도가 11.6°Brix로 높고 산도는 0.37%로 낮으며, 경도는 14.5g·mm<SUP>-2</SUP>로 ‘아끼히메’에 비해 우수하여 저장성이 뛰어나다. 탄저병에 저항성이 없으며, 흰가루병도 다소 약하지만, 방제에 유의하면 고품질의 딸기를 생산할 수 있다. A new strawberry cultivar (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.) ‘Okmae’ was developed from a cross between ‘Toyonoka’ and ‘Maehyang’. This cultivar has a good fruit quality and suitable number of flowers per cluster for labor saving in fruit thinning. ‘Gyoengnam No. 1’ was selected as an elite line with vigorous plant growth, higher soluble solids content and fruit firmness after examining its characteristics and productivity in forcing cultures from 2007 to 2009. Farmer’s field trial of ‘Gyoengnam No. 1’ was conducted in 2010 and it was registered as ‘Okmae’ thereafter. The general characteristics of ‘Okmae’ are vigorous growth habit, erect plant type, less number of leaf and elliptic leaf shape. ‘Okmae’ has long peduncle and 9-10 flowers per flower cluster which need less labor for fruit thinning. Fruits of ‘Okmae’ are conical having a bright red and glossy skin color. Although ‘Okmae’ has a smaller average fruit number per plant of 21.9 than that of the control cultivars, it’s possible to produce high yield because of greater fruit weight of 26.0 g. ‘Okmae’ showed a high soluble solids content of 11.6 °Brix, low acidity of 0.37%, and high firmness of 14.5 g·mm<SUP>-2</SUP>. It is sensitive to anthracnose and powery mildews, but high-quality strawberry can be harvested by using effective control measure.

Germinoma arising in the basal ganglia is a rare, well-documented entity representing 5% to 10% of all intracranial germinomas. And it has been known that the germinoma of the basal ganglia is usually associated with cystic formation on brain CT and MRI findings. We report a case of cystic germinoma in the basal ganglia. Although pure germinoma in the basal ganglia is generally radiosensitive and potentially curable, we have chosen chemotherapy alone in order to prevent late sequelae of radiotherapy. The patient began to receive chemotherapy without radiotherapy. After eight cycles of treatment every 4 weeks, the patient displayed a nearly complete response and was improved. No neurologic sequelae was seen at discharge. Follow-up brain CT showed no residual enhancing lesion. The patient was asymptomatic for 2 years follow-up.

Crohn's disease is one of the chronic inflammatory disorders of unknown cause involving the gastrointestinal tract. The inflammation may occur in the colon, either alone or with small intestine. Crohn's disease has been associated with increased risk for coloretal carcinoma in patients with long-standing colitis, strictures and fistulae. Recently, we experienced a case of Crohn's disease complicating carcinoma in a 85 year old male. Ten years ago, he compained severe abdominal pain and diarrhea. and was detected colon obstruction and enteric fistula. But, he spontaneously improved. Recently, the patient was admitted complaining abdominal pain. He complaind abdominal pain and indigestion chronically and aggravated recently. He was examined with colonofibroscopy, and computered tomography, and carcinoma was detected at the site of Crohn's disease. (Korean J Med 59:80-84, 2000)
Development of Ergonomic Balance Seat(e-BASE) Chair

Objective: The aim of this study is to develop an ergonomic office chair that has an alarm function for the unbalanced sitting postures. Background: Contrary to expectation, it is reported that office workers sit on their chairs much more in unbalanced postures during daily work. Even though an office worker uses an ergonomically good-designed chair and begins their work in a good sitting posture, his/her posture is likely to shift to the unbalanced bad posture. Therefore, a posture alarm system would be very helpful in keeping office workers" good postures. Method: We developed a prototype chair with four load cells under a seat pan and one load cell beneath a backrest. Through some experiments, we set the criteria for unbalanced bad postures then implemented the criteria into the alarm system of the prototype chair. The chair called e-BASE chair could detect unbalance postures and show alarms for chair users. We also enhanced back support by developing a step-wised folding backrest. Results: The e-BASE chair showed better performance in interface pressure distributions and balanced posture ratio in VDT work. Conclusion: The ergonomic chair with posture alarm function(e-BASE chair) was developed. It showed better performance in seat pressure distribution and in keeping good posture during office work. Application: The posture alarm system and folding backrest can be applied to the new models of office chair.
