Purpose: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has led to significant global casualties. This study examines the postoperative impact of COVID-19 on patients who underwent gastrointestinal surgery, considering their heightened vulnerability to infections and increased morbidity and mortality risk. Methods: This retrospective observational study was conducted at a tertiary center and patients who underwent gastrointestinal surgery between January 2022 and February 2023 were included. Postoperative COVID-19 infection was defined as the detection of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 RNA by RT-PCR within 14 days after surgery. Propensity score matching was performed including age, sex, American Society of Anesthesiology physical status classification, and emergency operation between the COVID-19-negative (–) and -positive (+) groups. Results: Following 1:2 propensity score matching, 21 COVID-19(+) and 42 COVID-19(–) patients were included in the study. In the COVID-19(+) group, the postoperative complication rate was significantly higher (52.4% vs . 23.8%, P = 0.023). Mechanical ventilator requirement, intensive care unit (ICU) admission, and readmission rate did not significantly differ between the 2 groups. The median length of ICU (19 days vs . 4 days, P < 0.001) and hospital stay (18 vs . 8 days, P = 0.015) were significantly longer in the COVID-19(+) group. Patients with COVID-19 had a 2.4 times higher relative risk (RR) of major complications than patients without COVID-19 (RR, 2.37; 95% confidence interval, 1.254–4.467; P = 0.015). Conclusion: COVID-19 infection during the postoperative period in gastrointestinal surgery may have adverse outcomes which may increase the risk of major complications. Preoperative COVID-19 screening and protocols for COVID-19 prevention in surgical patients should be maintained.
Synergistic antioxidative activities of hydroxycinnamoyl-peptides

<P>Antioxidants have become an important subject of study as an active ingredient for cosmetics and preservatives for food. We synthesized antioxidative peptide conjugates of hydroxycinnamic acids (HCAs) such as ferulic acid (FA), caffeic acid (CA), and sinapic acid (SA) by SPPS method. We measured their potential antioxidant properties by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH) scavenging test and lipid autoxidation inhibition test. When the antioxidative peptides, such as glutathione analogue (GS(Bzl)H) and carnosine (CAR), were conjugated to HCAs, their antioxidative activities were enhanced significantly. CA-peptides exhibited the highest free radical scavenging activity by the DPPH test, and showed good antioxidative activity in the lipid autoxidation test. FA- and SA-peptides showed excellent antioxidative activity in the lipid autoxidation test. Furthermore, we demonstrated a synergistic antioxidative activity of HCA-peptide conjugates by comparing their antioxidative activity with that of a simple mixture of HCAs and the antioxidant peptides. Microstructural properties at the interfaces of ZnO nanorods and ZnO homo-buffer layers.

<P>Uniformly and vertically well-aligned ZnO nanorods were fabricated in-situ and ex-situ on ZnO films using a catalyst-free metal-organic chemical vapor process. Microstructural properties of the initial growth of ZnO nanorods on ZnO films with different surface roughnesses were investigated. We observed that the ZnO nanorods grown on ZnO films with surface roughness of less than 1.0 nm were well-aligned along the c-axis and in the ab-plane. When the nanorods grew on ZnO films with a large surface roughness, they had three different growth directions of 28 degrees, 62 degrees, and 90 degrees to the film surface. The slant angle of 62 degrees corresponds to the angle between the ZnO(001) and (101) planes. The initial growth direction difference caused structural disorder at the interface of the ZnO nanorod and film, and prevented epitaxial growth and the alignment of the nanorods.</P>
이기종 네트워크 가상환경에서의 3D 게임 설계 및 구현

본 논문에서는 서로 다른 곳에 구축되어 있는 이기종 가상환경을 네트워크로 연동하고 이러한 환경에서 3D 게임을 지원하기 위한 시스템 설계 및 구현 결과를 제시한다. 각각의 가상환경은 수평-수직-정방형 디스플레이 장비 및 마그네틱-하이브리드 방식의 트랙킹 장비를 이용하여 구축되었다. 제안 시스템에서는 서로 다른 형태의 디스플레이, 트래킹 및 인터랙션 도구로 이루어진 개별 가상환경을 연동함으로써 발생하는 데이터 간의 이질성을 해결하기 위한 뷰 동기화, 인터랙션 동기화 기법 및 사용자 인식 모듈을 제공한다. 또한 별도의 컨트롤 서버를 구축하여 개별 노드간의 동기화를 제공하고 공유 데이터를 효과적으로 관리할 수 있도록 하였다. 개발된 환경 및 시스템에서 “Alice in Virtual World” 라는 1 인칭 슈팅 게임을 수행하여 그 활용 가능성을 입증하였다.

Objectives: This study identified problems and improvements in projects targeted to dental workers in a child-adolescent dental care service. Methods: The subjects were 40 dentists, 43 dental hygienists, and 51 others who participated in service in Seoul. A self-administered questionnaire was used to address the problems and improvements in the project. Descriptive statistics, chi- square test, and one-way analysis of variance were performed using SPSS 23.0. Results: Oral examination was performed by 99.2% of dentists, and some service items such as professional tooth cleaning, fluoride application, and scaling were performed by dental auxiliary personnel regardless of legal duties. The problem was that the subjects took a lot of time in providing services, and students or guardians participating in the project refused to receive preventive dental services. As regards improvements, the insurance fee was the highest (48.1%), followed by the provision of regular services (38.8%), and system improvement and administrative support (35.7%). Conclusions: To activate a child-adolescent dental care service, it is thought that continuous efforts such as providing financial support by the government, education to increase participants’ understanding, and social consensus for the participation of service providers and beneficiaries are required.

<P>We report high-performance of ambipolar organic field-effect transistors (FETs) based on the low band gap copolymers of pDPPT2NAP-HD and pDPPT2NAP-OD. The polymers are composed of electron-rich 2,6-di(thienyl)naphthalene (T2NAP) and electron-deficient diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) units with branched alkyl chains of 2-hexyldecyl (HD) or 2-octyldodecyl (OD). The polymers were polymerized via Suzuki coupling, yielding optical band gaps of ∼1.4 eV. In the transistor performance test, we observed good ambipolar transport behavior in both polymer films, and pDPPT2NAP-OD displayed hole and electron mobilities 1 order of magnitude higher than the corresponding properties of pDPPT2NAP-HD. Thermal annealing of the polymer films increased the carrier mobilities. Annealing at 150 °C provided optimal conditions yielding saturated film crystallinity and maximized carrier mobility. The highest hole and electron mobilities achieved in these polymers were 1.3 and 0.1 cm<SUP>2</SUP>/(V s), respectively, obtained from pDPPT2NAP-OD. The polymer structure and thermal annealing affected the carrier mobility, and this effect was investigated by fully characterizing the polymer films by grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) experiments. The GIXD data revealed that both polymers formed highly crystalline films with edge-on orientation. pDPPT2NAP-OD, which included longer alkyl chains, showed a higher tendency to form long-range order among the polymer chains. Thermal annealing up to 150 °C improved the polymer film crystallinity and promoted the formation of longer-range lamellar structures. AFM and TEM images of the films were consistent with the GI-XD data. Theoretical calculations of the polymer structures provided a rationale for the relationship between the torsional angle between aromatic rings and the carrier mobility. Pneumocystis jiroveci (이전의 carinii) 폐렴은 면역력이 저하되어 있는 환자에게 심각하고 잠재적으로는 생명을 위협할 수 있는 감염으로, 조혈모세포 이식을 시행받은 환자에게서 주요한 감염원이 되고 있다. 중요한 위험 인자로는 광범위 이식 편대 숙주병, 지속적인 코티코 스테로이드의 사용, 악성 질환의 재발 등이 있다. 기흉은 에이즈와 연관된 Pneumocystis jiroveci 의 합병증으로 알려져 있음에도 불구하고, 조혈 모세포 이식을 시행받은 환자에게서는 좀처럼 보고된 자가 없다. 이에 본 저자들은 동종 조혈 모세포 이식후에 합병증으로 발생한 Pneumocystis jiroveci 폐렴에 속발하여, 양측의 난치성 자발성 기흉을 보인 27세 남자 환자의 증례를 보고하는 바이다.
