Chronic ethanol consumption leads to memory impairment and also induces brain damage. The hippocampus has been particularly regarded as a possible target organ of alcoholic intoxication, since this structure plays a prominent function in memory processes. Cordyceps has been used as a traditional medicine in Asian countries for a long time. Different types of Cordyceps extract were reported to have various pharmacological activities including anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, and immune modulatory effects. Guem Chung Cho is an artificial cultivated Cordyceps, and was supplied from GCordy (Seoul, Korea). Ethanol extract of Cordycep (50 g) was made by rotary evaporate, and resulting powder 8.29 g was obtained (yield 17%). In the present study, we investigated the effects of ethanol extract of Geum Chung Cho on short-term memory, cell proliferation and apoptosis in the hippocampus of ethanol-treated gerbils. The gerbils were divided into 5 groups (n = 10 in each group): Control group, alcohol-treated group, alcohol-treated and 0.001 mg/kg Geum Chung Cho-applied group, alcohol-treated and 0.01 mg/kg Geum Chung Cho-applied group, and alcohol-treated and 0.1 mg/kg Geum Chung Cho-applied group. Gerbils in the alcohol-treated groups were orally administered ethanol (1 g/kg) once a day for 2 weeks. Gerbils in the Guem Chung Cho-applied groups were orally administered Guem Chung Cho extract at each dosage 1 hour before ethanol consumption. Our results revealed that consumption of alcohol for 2 weeks deteriorated short-term memory, induced apoptosis, and inhibited cell proliferation, and reduced expressions of brain-derived neurotrophic (BDNF) and tyrosine kinase B (TrkB). However, Guem Chung Cho treatment alleviated alcohol-induced short-term memory impairment through enhancing cell proliferation and BDNF expression with inhibiting apoptosis in the hippocampus. Guem Chung Cho showed maximum effects at 0.1 mg/kg. Based on these results, alcohol extract of Guem Chung Cho may provide therapeutic value for the treatment of chronic alcohol-inducted brain injury. This study was supported by GCordy company.

Purpose : Several panoramic indices have been suggested to assess bone quality from the morphology and width of mandibular cortex on panoramic radiography. The purpose of this study was to compare dental implant failure group with control group in panoramic mandibular index (PMI), mandibular cortical index (MCI), and gonion index (GI) and to determine the effect of these panoramic indices on dental implant failure. Materials and Methods : A case-control study was designed. Test group (n = 42) consisted of the patients who had their implants extracted because of peri-implantitis. Control group (n = 139) consisted of the patients who retained their implants over one year without any pathologic changes and had been followed up periodically. They had dental implants installed in their mandibles without bone augmentation surgery from 1991 to 2001. The following measures were collected for each patients: 1) PMI, MCI, and GI were measured twice at one-week interval on preoperative panoramic views; and 2) age, sex, implant length, implant type, installed location, occluding dentition state, and complication were investigated from the chart record. Results : The PMI showed moderate level of repeatability. The intra-observer agreement of MCI and GI were good. There was statistically significant difference in PMI between two groups. There were significant different patterns of distribution of MCI and GI between two groups. Among the panoramic indices, PMI and MCI showed significant correlation with dental implant failure. Conclusion : Panoramic indices can be used as reference data in estimating bone quality of edentulous patients who are to have implants installed in their mandibles.

This study purposes the influence of job stress upon job satisfaction of Sports Centers Employees demonstratively. I set up the employees of sports centers in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province as Population and took 300 employees in 13 sports centers using a stratified cluster random sampling. The actually used data were 278 workers except 22 employees who were judged to respond unfaithfully or to leave out some of the surveyed questions. I made a conclusion as follows through statistical analyses including reliability analysis, frequency analysis, t-test, one-way ANOVA and Scheffe's multiple range test. First, there was a statistical significance according to age, education, position, and working years in the job stress under personal characteristics and personalities of employees in sports centers. Second, there was a statistical significance according to age, education, position, and working years in the job satisfaction under personal characteristics and personalities of employees in sports centers.

Methemoglobinemia is an uncommon but potentially fatal disorder. Most cases have no adverse clinical consequence and require no treatment, but methemoglobinemia is often overlooked as a cause of low oxygen saturation, and often mistaken for the more common causes of hypoxia by anesthesiologists despite simple bedside tests that indicate the presence of this treatable abnormality. We present a 68-year-old female patient who underwent gastrectomy for advanced gastric cancer with bleeding. In the preoperative period, the patient showed cyanosis and oxygen saturation was 85% by pulse oximeter, but oxygen saturation by arterial blood gas analysis was 100%. After tracheal intubation, the methemoglobin level was 18.3%. Ascorbic acid and methylene blue were administered. During preanesthetic evaluation, the patient had not informed the anesthesiologist that she had been taking dapsone. (Korean J Anesthesiol 2010; 59: 340-343)

Cogenital hypothyroidism due to organification defect was first reported by Haddad and Sidbury in 1959. The organification defect is easily proved by perchlorate discharge test. We experienced a patient who had large goiter, growth and mental retardation, and revealed positive reponse to perchlorate discharges test, and the surgical biopsied specimen showed Huerthle cell adenoma, which was probably due to chronic stimulation of thyroid stimulating hormone, or coexisted incidentally. Described here a case of congenital hypothyroidism due to organification defect associated with Huerthle cell adenoma, with review of some literatures.
Gold Nanoparticle-Based Mediatorless Biosensor Prepared on Microporous Electrode
Zhang, Fenghua,Cho, Soon ,Sam,Yang, Soon ,Hye,Seo, Seong ,Suk,Cha, Geun ,Sig,Nam, Hakhyun WILEY-VCH Verlag 2006 Electroanalysis Vol.18 No.3

A mediatorless biosensor was fabricated with a double-sided microporous gold electrode by successively immobilizing a mixed self-assembled monolayer (SAM) comprising carboxylic-acid- and thiol-terminated thiolate (dl-thiorphan and 1,8-octanedithiol), glucose oxidase (GOx) and finally gold nanoparticle (Au NP) on one working side. The double-sided microporous gold electrodes were formed by plasma sputtering of gold on a porous nylon substrate, yielding a face-to-face type two-electrode electrochemical cell. While the straight chain molecule 1,8-octanedithiol forms a dense insulating monolayer, the side armed dl-thiorphan forms a low density layer for the diffusion of redox couples to the electrode surface. The mixed SAM not only provided the linking functional groups for both enzyme and Au NP but also resulted in the appropriately spaced monolayer for direct electron tansfer (ET) process from the center of the redox enzyme to the electrode surface. After covalently immobilizing GOx onto the carboxylic-acid-terminated monolayer, Au NP was easily immobilized to both enzyme and nearby thiols by simple dispensing of the colloidal gold solution. It was observed that the resulting amperometric biosensor exhibited quantitatively the same response to glucose in the presence and in the absence of dissolved oxygen, which evidence that the Au NPs immobilized on and around the GOx promote direct ET from the enzymes to the electrode, assuming the role of a common redox mediator.
