Characterization of GaAs/AlGaAs V-groove Quantum Wires by scanning micro-photoluminescence
Cheol-Koo Hahn,Hoon Kim,Mutsuo Ogura 한국물리학회 2004 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.45 No.1
GaAs/AlGaAs V-groove quantum wires (QWRs), constructed by a ow-rate modulated epitaxy (FME) technique using metal-organic vapor-phase epitaxy, are studied using low-temperature scanning -photoluminescence (PL) measurements. Spatially resolved optical signals from the quantum structures, such as QWRs, a sidewall quantum well (SQW), and a top quantum well (TQW), were observed. In addition for the rst time, QWR- or quantum dot (QD)-like signals, which are thought to be the result of step bunching on the facet boundary, were observed at the boundary between the SQW and the TQW. Furthermore, the scanning -photoluminescence (PL) characterization method revealed that an exact alignment of the pre-pattern to the [က 110] direction is a very important factor in suppressing the step-bunching eect on the sidewalls/facet boundary and in realizing high-quality QWRs.

BACKGROUND: We sought to investigate the mechanism of geometric changes after main branch (MB) stent implantation and to identify the predictors of functionally significant 'jailed' side branch (SB) lesions. METHODS AND RESULTS: Seventy-seven patients with bifurcation lesions were prospectively enrolled from 8 centers. MB intravascular ultrasound was performed before and after MB stent implantation, and fractional flow reserve was measured in the jailed SB. The vessel volume index of both the proximal and distal MB was increased after stent implantation. The plaque volume index decreased in the proximal MB (9.1+/-3.0 to 8.4+/-2.4 mm(3)/mm, P=0.001), implicating plaque shift, but not in the distal MB (5.4+/-1.8 to 5.3+/-1.7 mm(3)/mm, P=0.227), implicating carina shifting to account for the change in vessel size (N=56). The mean SB fractional flow reserve was 0.71+/-0.20 (N=68) and 43% of the lesions were functionally significant. Binary logistic-regression analysis revealed that preintervention % diameter stenosis of the SB (odds ratio=1.05; 95% CI, 1.01 to 1.09) and the MB minimum lumen diameter located distal to the SB ostium (odds ratio=3.86; 95% CI, 1.03 to 14.43) were independent predictors of functionally significant SB jailing. In patients with > or =75% stenosis and Thrombolysis In Myocardial Infarction grade 3 flow in the SB, no difference in post-stent angiographic and intravascular ultrasound parameters was found between SB lesions with and without functional significance. CONCLUSIONS: Both plaque shift from the MB and carina shift contribute to the creation/aggravation of an SB ostial lesion after MB stent implantation. Anatomic evaluation does not reliably predict the functional significance of a jailed SB stenosis.

In this study, the authors investigated changes in the non-specific immune states of 35 acute leukemia patients(19 AML; 16 ALL) according to the state of their disease (25 at diagnosis; 10 in complete remission with three off-treatments) and compared them to those of normal controls. The natural killer(NK) cell activity aganist K562 target cells and antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity(ADCC) against L1210 target cells were measured by four-hour chromium release cytotoxic assays. The number of NK cells was estimated by immunofluorescence techniques using monoclonal antibodies of Leu-7a, while Leu-11 and T-cell subpopulations were estimated by monoclonal antibodies ctf CD3, CD4, CD8. Interleukin-2 (IL2) productivity was measured with peripheral mononuclear cells from five patients. The results were as follows; 1) The NK and ADCC activities significantly decreased in the initial state, which might be due to a decreased number of NK cells and also to a diluting effect by the circulating blasts in ADCC. 2) In the complete remission state, patients who had maintenance chemotherapy showed a lower NK cell number, which resulted in decreased NK activity during this period without any effect on ADCC. 3) Compared to the controls, such depression of nonspecific immune state was more pronounced in the AML group than in the ALL group. In conclusion, the non-specific cellular immune states differed between the initial state and the complete remission state, to which maintenance chemotherapy might be attributed. The mechanism and the clinical significance of such an altered immune state according to the diseased state in relation to maintenance treatment remain to be elucidated.

Background: There are limited data on the relative efficacy of 1st-vs. 2nd-generation limus-eluting stents in bifurcation lesions. Methods and Results: Our analysis of a Korean multicenter registry for bifurcated coronary lesions enrolled 1,762 patients treated with 2nd-generation everolimus-eluting stent (EES, n=348) or 1st-generation sirolimus-eluting stents (SES, n=1,414). In the overall population, EES was comparable to SES regarding major adverse cardiac events (MACE: composite of cardiac death, nonfatal myocardial infarction, and target vessel revascularization (TVR)), cardiac death, and TVR rates within a 2-year follow-up. In 1: 3 propensity score-matched populations, EES showed a significantly lower MACE rate compared with SES (HR [95% CI], 0.53 [0.29-0.97]; P=0.039), mainly through a reduction in repeat revascularization (HR [95% CI], 0.47 [0.24-0.92]; P=0.027). EES was superior to SES in reducing TVR in patients with left main (LM) lesions (HR [95% CI], 0.21 [0.06-0.67]; P=0.008) or in patients treated with 2-stent technique PCI (HR [95% CI], 0.28 [0.09-0.91]; P=0.035). There was no difference in clinical outcomes between 2 stents in a non-LM bifurcation lesion or in patients treated with a 1-stent technique. Conclusions: At 2-year follow-up, 1st- and 2nd-generation limus-eluting stents showed comparable clinical outcomes in general bifurcation lesions. EES was superior to SES after matching by propensity score, especially in patients with LM bifurcation or in those treated by a 2-stent technique.

Introduction: Congenital anomalies of coronary artery have various symptoms, depending on the adjacent or surrounded structure with its origin and pathway. Anomalous left coronary artery (LCA) arising from right coronary valsalva sinus is one of coronary artery anomalies can lead to ischemia, but most of patients with anomalous LCA from opposite sinus have no symptoms and diagnosed by autopsy in young age. About 18-30% of patients with anomalous coronary artery have symptoms, who could have early diagnosis and undergoing CABG surgery for risk reduction. Case report: A 62-year-old patient came to hospital by syncope. He had underlying disease as hypertension, diabetes mellitus and dyslipidemia. In coronary angiography, LCA originated from right sinus of valsalva without stenosis. Following coronary CT angiogram showed Left main was originated from right sinus of valsalva and its pathway was interarterial type. This patient keeps doing well with medical treatment without any fatal events until now. Conclusion: Anomalous coronary artery is rare case, so it is easily missed until fatal symptoms occur. Congenital anomalies of coronary artery have various symptoms depending on the adjacent surrounded structure with origin and pathway of coronary artery. We report a male patient with anomalous LCA arising from right coronary valsalva sinus presenting syncope. This patient does not have exertional coronary symptoms, and keeps 1 year follow up with medications without undergoing CABG surgery or any of fatal events.
Optical Properties of Europium-Silicate Thin Films Fabricated on Different SiOx Intermediate Layer
Young Chul Shin,김태근,Cheol Koo Hahn,Eun Hong Kim,Shi Jong Leem 한국물리학회 2007 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.50 No.6
We report the effect of SiO$_x$ intermediate layers on the photoluminescence properties of europium-silicate thin films. Layer structures of Eu$_2$O$_3$/SiO$_x$/Si (100) were deposited by using an rf-sputtering method and were annealed at 1100 $^{\circ}\mathrm{C}$ by rapid thermal annealing (RTA). Two methods were used for the deposition of the SiO$_x$ layer: sputtering using a SiO$_2$ target (Ar gas at a rate of 50 sccm) and reactive sputtering using a Si target (Ar gas at a rate of 45 sccm with O$_2$ gas at a rate of 5 sccm). The photoluminescence peak at 430 nm was observed in the sample with a SiO$_x$ interlayer sputtered from a SiO$_2$ target. In comparison, a PL peak at 570 nm was observed in the sample where SiO$_x$ layer had been deposited by reactive sputtering from a Si target.
