This study was carried out to investigate growth and morphological characteristics of leaf, flower and winter bud of Corylopsis species such as C. coreana, C. spicata, C. sinensis, C. willmottiae, C. willmottiae 'Spring Purple', C. wilsonii, C. spicata 'Yellow Spring', C. gotoana, and C. vechiana. In the Corylopsis species, C. coreana, C. willmottiae, and C. vetchiana had larger flowers, longer flower cluster, and more flowers than other species. C. sinensis and C. veitchiana had fragrant flowers. In addition, species with beautiful leaf color were C. spicata 'Yellow spring' with yellow color and C. willmottiae 'Spring purple' with purple color, which eventually changed to green. The winter bud of C. sinensis, C. willmottiae, C. willmottiae 'Spring Purple', and C. vechiana were oval and different from those of other species. Comparison of the morphological characteristics among C. coreana, C. spicata, and C. sinensis, C. coreana showed they had earlier flowering dates and brighter yellow flowers than those of other species. Flower cluster of C. sinensis was shortest, but it had most number of flowers and fragrance. In addition, the winter buds of C. coreana and C. spicata with elliptical shape were different from that of C. sinensis with oval shape. Therefore, based on these characteristics, the following Corylopsis species were found to be promising as woody landscape plants: C. coreana, C. sinensis, C. willmottiae 'Spring Purple', C. spicata 'Yellow Spring', and C. vechiana.

Fauriei pear(Pyrus fauriei Nakai) potentially useful as pollenizers in single-cultivar `Hwangkuembae' orchard was evaluated for their flowering times and pollen germination(%). Their efficiency in the setting of fruits following controlled pollinations on 'Hwangkuembae' at Fruit Tree Research Institute in Suwon was also examined. The obtained results are as followes ; (1) Flowering times of SKK 1 was from April 21 and that of them corresponded to that of 'Hwangkuembae'. (2) Pollen germination (%) of SKK 1 using as pollenizer of 'Hwangkuembae' was over 90%. Therefore Based on these factors, folwering times and pollen germination, SKK 1 was found to be promising as pollenizer for single-cultivar 'Hwangkuembae' orchard. (3) Percentage of fruit setting in 'Hwangkuembae' pollinated with Fauriei pear showed 71.9%. And there was no statistically significant difference in the fruit diameter(cm), fruit height(cm), fruit index, fruit weight (g), soluble solid(˚BX), acidity(pH), and fruit hardness (kg/㎠) of 'Hwangkuembae' pollinated with Fauriei pear (4) Percentages of fruit setting in 'Hwangkuembae' pollnated with Fauriei pear corresponding to flowering times of 'Hwangkuembae', was 871.9% and no statistically significant difference in fruit quality. On the bases of flowering times, pollen germination(%), efficient fruit set(%), and no statistically significant difference in fruit quality, Fauriei pear(Pyrus fauriei Nakai) is promising as pollenizers for single-cultivar 'Hwangkuembae' orchard.

This study was carried out to breed new cultivars of Lagerstroemia indica by investigation on growth conditions and environments for old-veteran of Lagerstroemia indica in Korea. The old-veteran of Lagerstroemia indica of more than 150 years old was surveied 25 numbers and more than 600 years old was 3 numbers. Growth conditions was relatively good but damaged by blight and noxious insects. In general the seed performance appered beyond 10%. Old-veterans of Lagerstroemia indica at Kumi and Haman have been relatively hardy zone. Therefore, it is anticipated that upon further testing these plants may be extended to another hardiness zone.

This study was carried out to accelarate the growth of rhizome and shoot formation of Cymbidium kanran. Rhizome used as materials were prepared by seed strile culture and rhizome-tips were placed on the basal medium (Murashige & Skoog) which were supplemented with growth substances. The results obtained were summarized as follows: 1. Shoot formation at the rhizome-tips was the best in the media supplemented with 0-0.1mg/l BA. Rhizome growth was stimulated in the media supplemented with 0.1mg/l NAA and 4-8mg/l BA. 2. When organic matters were added to basal medium, a noticeable promotion of rhizome growth was observed in the medium containing activated charcoal. 3. The growth of rhizom was promoted when 4% sucrose, 3g/l pepton, or 4g/l yeast extract were added to basal medium. 4. Incorporation of 1.0mg/l BA and 10^-3M L-arginine, L-aspartic acid stimulated shoot formation remarkably under light condition. 5. Growth of rhizome according to light or dark treatment was better under dark than under 16hr illuminated light condition and the rhizome cultured under dark condition was more effective for shoot formation.

This study was carried out to develop new cultivars of Z. serrata showing red fall leaf as street trees. Z. serrata which had red fall leaves were selected and then examined for contents of leaf anthocyanin and chlorophyll. In addition, for the progeny test, selected trees were grafted. Of 21 trees having red autumn leaves, three individuals, 'S-6', 'S-20', and 'I-24' were finally selected. They contained higher level of anthocyanin in the leaves. Once developed, the red color remained till late autumn. Grafted plants of the selected strains showed high grafting efficiency and red foliage color in autumn. The soil pH of the survey sites ranged from 5.9 to 7.24. However, other soil characteristics did not show much difference among the sites with regard to inorganic nutrients including N(%), $P_2O_5$, CEC(mg/meq), $K^+$, $Ca^{3+}$, and $Mg^{2+}$, 'S-6', 'S-20', and 'I-24', clonal lines with red fall leaf were selected as new cultivars and propagates by grafting.
