Vol.11 No.2

Complexation constant 값을 고정한 후, pK_(a) of N-H acids와 bases의 log K 간의 Bronsted relationship을 이용하여, 2-Pyridone의 dimerization constant 값 k_(d)를 계산한 결과 1.2×10^(5) M^(-1)로 나왔다. Hydrogen bonding association of 2-pyridone to N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone in carbon tetrachloride at 25° was measured( 94N^(-l)). After fixing the complaxation constant, the dunerization constant of 2-pyridone was also calculated from the relationship between the pK_(a), of N-H acids and log K for bases and got the value of kd as 12x10^(5) with the standard deviation of 0.002. it seems that the hydrogen bonding equilibrium constant for 2-pyridone to the oxygen bases is larger than the expected from the other N-H acid to the same base.

The Game Samuel Beckett Plays in Endgame

Vol.35 No.1

Samuel Beckett’s Endgame (1957) was originally published and performed in French, entitled Fin de Partie, and translated to English by Beckett himself. It is a one-act play with four characters: Hamm, Clov, Nagg, and Nell confined to a shelter, where there is nothing to eat except the last few biscuits in the cupboard in the off-stage kitchen. “Endgame” is a term in chess that refers to the final stages of the game where only a few pieces remain on the board, and Beckett himself stated that he entitled his play “Endgame as in chess” and Hamm is like a king who desperately delays the end. Naturally, the analogy of the play with chess has dominated the reading of the play. Identifying Hamm as king, Clov as knight or pawn, and Negg and Nell as either rooks or pawns, many critics have examined metaphors of chess or a game in the play. Focusing on the link between Endgame and chess game, the current readings, however, have overlooked how Beckett breaks the rules of a game in the play. Applying Johan Huizinga’s theory of the game, I reveal the neglected aspect, re-examine the play’s characteristics of the Theater of the Absurd concerning game theory, and examine what outcomes Beckett intends. I further examine what underlies Beckett’s legal scuffles with directors and theater companies that staged his play.

Vol.18 No.3

Although the working environment is measured at the construction site, only a few noise and vibration that are typically exposed for each process are performed without measuring the working environment by segmenting the exposed harmful factors. Therefore, it is intended to find the harmfulness of silicon oxide dust, which is most exposed at construction sites, and the complementary points of improvement measures currently being implemented at construction sites. The status was analyzed using the actual condition survey report issued by the Korea Occupational Health Corporation and the Korea Occupational Health Association and data from the work environment measurement institution, and compared and analyzed with the rules on work environment measurement of the Occupational Safety and Health Act. The harmfulness of silicon oxide dust was identified and improvement measures were derived. It is expected that occupational diseases against silicon dust can be reduced if the harmfulness of silicon oxide dust at construction sites is derived and improvement measures are actively applied at the site.

“Yanki Occupation” of Haiti in Edwidge Danticat’s The Farming of Bones

Vol.68 No.3

Edwidge Danticat’s The Farming of Bones (1998) depicts a tragic history of the 1937 massacre of Haitians by Dominican military troops, particularly migrant workers, under the dictator Rafael Trujillo’s orders, with the participation of Dominican civilians. Critics have examined the novel’s representation of the traumatic event that has been silenced and omitted from the official narratives. Despite different approaches, the current readings have commonly re-circulated the binary between Haiti/Haitian/victim and Dominican Republic/Trujillo/persecutor and reproduced a popular perception of the massacre as a conflict between the two Caribbean nations, while highlighting the long legacy of French and Spanish colonization on Hispaniola as its root cause. These readings tend to overlook one of the most crucial histories of the 1937 massacre referenced in Danticat’s novel—the US occupation of Haiti from 1915 to 1934. Danticat harshly criticizes the United States in her article, “The Long Legacy of Occupation in Haiti,” published in 2015 on the hundred-year-anniversary of the US invasion of Haiti. Explaining how America affected and propelled the development of sugar plantations in the Dominican Republic, the Haitian eastward movement, and exploitation of Haitian migrant workers as cheap labor force, this article sheds new light on important aspects of the 1937 massacre that have been relatively neglected in discussions of The Farming of Bones. Based on Danticat’s article, I examine how she represents the history of the US occupation of Haiti as an underlying cause of the 1937 massacre and portrays its continuing effects on Hispaniola in the novel.

Place and Displacement in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man

Vol.14 No.2

Young Stephen identifies himself with a list of signifiers given to him by his Irish geographical and social space. Yet, thinking about something beyond the listed signifiers, he feels a headache, which can be read as a symptom of the reality omitted from the list, the reality of Ireland’s colonization. His headache ensues as a response to the discordance between his list and his geography lesson, and above all, to the dissonance between the political and social reality of Ireland and the ‘Ireland’ on his flyleaf list. He turns over the flyleaf, but later, realizes his displacement and his colonial otherness through his engagement with the Irish English language, which dissolves his previous sense of a unified identity. He inevitably feels anxiety about the space of colonized Ireland and his identity as an Irishman. However, such uneasiness doesn’t lead him to join the contemporary rebellion against colonialism. He resists the insidious reproduction of the colonial situation by intentionally refusing to be categorized or established as an Irish subject who unknowingly and unconsciously colludes with the British colonization of Ireland. Searching for the possibility of and space for resistance, Stephen defines his race’s consciousness as “uncreated” and through exile, attempts to differentiate himself from the traditional net which compels him to fix his identity to a social or national space. Offering an anti-Bildung narrative, an account of anxiety caused by place and displacement, and the suggestion of an undiscovered Irish consciousness and identity, A Portrait draws attention to the reality of the displacement of the Ireland that exists beyond the text and demands that readers react.

Vol.20 No.3

Folowing its suces in the U. S. music market that has so far ben unfulfiled by Korean idols, BTS syndrome has won positive reviews worldwide. This study analyzed how idol groups, entertainment companies, and fandoms interacted and used cros-media strategies from the perspective of information management until BTS became a globaly influential human brand. BTS' suces was posible because of the strong global fandom and cros-media strategy of entertainment companies that actively utilized not only excelent musical elements but also the rapidly changing media environment. BTS's record-breaking news from abroad, including Bilboard, was reported through domestic media, which in turn formed a mechanism for the continued spread of isues through online portals and strengthening of awarenes. Also, the BTS Worldview, organicaly conected to various media, has built up the image of young people as an idol group with god influence, and fandom ARMY has created a strategic human brand as an information watcher who manages the star crisis while showing loyalty to reproduce and share more content in various media spaces based on content provided by entertainment companies. As such, the cros-media strategy of utilizing traditional media and social media in the entertainment industry, partnership communication with fandom has become a model for K-pop, which has shown the potential of a global human brand. K-pop, the wel-known music brand of the Korean Wave, has now become an actively managed information industry and a genre of entertainment culture. In result, BTS as the human brand wil play significant roles in the global cultural environment.

Writing about the Holocaust Using Deliberate Obscurity in W. G. Sebald's Austerlitz

Vol.113 No.-

Realistic representation has been regarded as the most adequate and valid approach in Holocaust literature, however, its problems have been also fiercely debated and criticized. Written in a mix of various genres, German writer W. G. Sebald’s Austerlitz (2001) rejects realistic representation. In the novel, an anonymous German narrator tells the story of Jacques Austerlitz, who tries to trace his forgotten memory of his parents, victims of the Holocaust. Despite the extensive inclusion of memoirs, historical documents, and photographs, the novel only offers an abstract, obscure, and incomplete view of Austerlitz’s past and the Holocaust in a non-linear narrative. This unique representation of the Holocaust is, however, largely neglected in current scholarship that has focused on the novel’s hybrid form and Sebald’s use of photography. Examining how Sebald intentionally creates and increases the uncertainty of the narrator’s and protagonist’s accounts, I explore how his synoptic representation reflects changing shapes and paradigms of Holocaust literature.
