Based on Ichidai Otoko
Vol.24 No.2
Saikaku and his work, Ichidai Otoko is valued highly today. It seems to be true that he had a great. interest in sex when he 'wrote the work, but the description of sex was not the intention of the work and his original motive was different. The gay quarters he describes in the work, is both the place of enjoyment and that of culture for Chonin where he pursues his desire for sex and money. Yonosuke, the hero of the work, travels about all country indulging himself in sex when he receives large inheritance on his father's death. After that, he begins to associate with so many geishas who are well-known for their beauty and culture. But through this process, the importance of Yonosuke as a character is lessened and the glorifof geishas increases instead. In this respect it is judged that the intention of Saikaku was not to criticize the world of geishas, but to picture a aesthetic aspect of it through such a life. And the fact that Yonosuke leaves for Nyogogashima by boat is a symbol that he is looking for an utopia where he can find humanity and eternal youth. And also his idealization of geishas and yearning for the beauty of gay quarters is found here in the journey.
In view of the preceding works
Vol.28 No.2
In overall view, Ichidai Otoko has a close similarity to Genji Monogatari. Ichidai Otoko was not, however, intended to parody classics with to associate with classical works for more realistic effect. In another classic, Ukiyo Monogatari, are found much characteristic features of evaluating geishas. In view of all these, Saikaku can be said to have assimilated the characteristic features of the preceding works and combined his humour found in Haikai so that he might maximize the effect of making a round picture of the contemporary world.
Vol.26 No.2
Not until Meiji's era did Saikaku's novels begin to be re-evaluated. It was found by this study that modern Japanese novelists, such as Ozaki Koyo and Koda Rohan, in the form of their novels, adopted the style and the method of description, the origin of which could be found in Saikaku's novels. And it was also found that other naturalistic novelists, who came later, such as Tayam Katai adn Masamune Hakucho, imitated Saikaku's techniques, from the standpoint of naturalism.
