The purpose of this study was to explore children's play behavior in playgrounds and it's conditions which stimulate or inhibit play. As a research method, participant observations were used. Six playgrounds were selected and observed focusing on the environment of playgrounds, play equipments and children's play behavior. Five observations were conducted for each playground, each lasting two hours. The results indicated that (1) the general atmosphere of the playground and residential area, and the distance between home and playground influenced children's play. (2) the design and play equipment of all playgrounds were monotonous and uniform. (3) On the playgrounds children engaged in all kinds of play such as motor play, functional play, constructive play, dramatic play, sociodramatic play, and games with rules. (4) Children tended to use complex play equipments more often than simple ones. (5) Empty spaces in playgrounds improved the quality of children's play.
