The purpose of this research is to compare and examine the music, costume, and movement of the two most representative dance forms using costumes with long sleeves in Northeast Asia: the Buddhist dance of Korea, and the Water sleeve dance of China. First, this research suggests that each form of two dances has a different way of musical inscription and a different formation, and that each country's traditional features has been reflected on the music. The most distinguishing feature of the Buddhist dance's music is that the dancer takes a part of the music by beating the drums. Also, the fact that the music starts with the Buddhist invocation beat and that the dancer makes the beats reflect the incantational power and religious marks of Buddhism. In contrast, the Water sleeve dance's music appears as a form of accompaniment depending on a lineup of movements. All of its' music is inscribed with Western musical score, therefore its' composition and rhythm follows the Western style. However, the Water sleeve dance's music doesn't have an indistinct form like Western music; it doesn't have repeating melody lines but different melody lines with similar impression. Second, the Buddhist dance and the Water sleeve dance both uses the costumes with long sleeves, and both dances names are related to long sleeves. It's resonable to assume that today's Buddhist dance costume has been developed little by little from monk's clothes. Water sleeve dance's costume "Susu" was named after its' display of the water's movement. At first, Water sleeve dance was performed with nothing on hands. However, as it appeared on the stage, the length of the sleeves had brought into relief resulting in today's long sleeve form. Upon this change, new movements dealing with long sleeves have been developed and systematized. Even though, they both use the costumes with long sleeves, sleeves are different in several ways, such as color, length and shape. Examining the movemental characteristics, Buddhist dance's movement is attended by the directions. Dancer throws the sleeves in one breath, and this movement contains the emotion and grief of our people. Dissimilarly, Water sleeve dance is more technical compare to Buddhist dance, and movements using wrists appears variously. Also, throwing the sleeves is extension of hands meaning that it only functions as an assistant of gestures. This research was conducted to examine the stylistic features of Buddhist dance and Water sleeve dance and to help the understanding of distinctive stylistic features of two different countries in the same cultural area. Such reciprocal understanding is essential to the aesthetic improvements of Oriental dances; more extended researches are requested for development of Oriental dances.
Sensory Characteristics and Consumer Acceptability of Perilla Porridges
2012 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.21 No.3
This study was conducted to understand the factors that affect the acceptance of various perilla porridges and compare the sensory characteristics that drive consumer acceptance of perilla porridges across Korean and Chinese cultures. A descriptive analysis was performed on 8 samples, which were made with 2 types of perilla oils, 3 types of perilla powders, 1 type of roasted perilla seeds, and 2 types of ground perilla porridges, by 10 Korean and 9 Chinese panelists. The Korean panelists generated more descriptors than the Chinese panel, and the Korean panelists used descriptors that were related to their individual experiences or cultural backgrounds. According to the results of consumer test, attributes such as glossy surface, salty flavor, and savory flavor determined positive preferences in the Korean panel, and attributes such as glossy surface, sesame oil odor, sesame oil flavor, porridge with milk, whiteness, light flavor, salty odor, and mouthfeel of porridge determined preference in the Chinese panel.
Microbial production of value-added material via metabolic engineering and fermentation
Vol.2019 No.1
Due to the increasing concerns on climate change and global environmental problems, development of eco-friendly and sustainable microbial fermentative process for the production of chemicals and compounds substituting currently in use petro-based one has been attracting much attention. Aromatic polyesters are of great interest due to its unique properties including thermal stability and high toughness, which are superior to aliphatic polyesters in many aspects. In this talk, I will introduce the development of microbial fermentative production of such value-added materials from renewable feedstock.
