Objectives: This study was conducted to investigate dental hygienists’ knowledge of smoking, attitudes toward tobacco cessation, and tobacco cessation education activities, which will serve as fundamental data for developing an effective tobacco cessation education program for dental hygienists. Methods: From 2020-08-17 to 2020-09-05, 184 dental hygienists working at dental clinics and hospitals in Gwangju and Jeollanam-do were surveyed. We performed t-tests, ANOVA, Pearson’s correlation analysis, and multiple regression analyses. Results: Dental hygienists’ smoking-related knowledge, expert attitudes toward tobacco cessation, and tobacco cessation education activities were all high in tobacco cessation education (p<0.05). According to the analysis of the dental hygienists’ knowledge of smoking, attitude toward smoking, and correlation of tobacco cessation education activities, there was a significant amount of correlation (p<0.01). According to the analysis of factors affecting dental hygienists’ tobacco cessation education activities, expert attitudes towards tobacco cessation (β=0.434, p<0.001), tobacco cessation materials (β=0.160, p=0.009), experience in tobacco cessation education while attending school (β=0.152, p=0.010), and attitudes toward tobacco cessation (p<0.05) were statistically significant. Conclusions: The results of this study are utilized as fundamental data to develop an effective tobacco cessation education program, factoring in dental hygienists’ attitudes toward tobacco cessation.
치위생학 전공 대학생의 임상실습 전환충격, 회복탄력성이 학업소진에 미치는 영향

Objectives: This study aimed to verify the degree of clinical practice transition shock, resilience, and academic burnout of dental hygiene students, and analyze factors affecting academic burnout. Methods: From September 1 to September 20, 2022, this study collected data from 201 dental hygiene students who experienced clinical practice, and subsequently conducted a t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis using the SPSS Statistics 22. Results: The transition shock and resilience showed a significantly negative correlation (r=-0.211), transition shock and academic burnout showed a significantly positive correlation (r=0.484), and resilience and academic burnout showed a significantly negative correlation (r=-0.568). Regarding factors affecting academic burnout, academic burnout increased when the transition shock was greater (β=0.263, p <0.001), major satisfaction after clinical practice was lower (β=0.180, p <0.05), and the average grades were lower (β=0.169, p <0.01). Academic burnout decreased when resilience was greater (β=-0.435, p <0.001). Conclusions: To prevent clinical practice transition shock and academic burnout, and to increase the resilience of dental hygiene students, it would be necessary to establish learning strategies, change the educational environment, and establish a systematic clinical practice management program.
복막투석 복막염의 원인균 검출을 위한 16S rRNA 유전자 표적 차세대 염기분석법의 적용

Background: 16S rRNA gene-targeted next-generation sequencing (NGS) can detect microorganisms in a comprehensive reference database. To date, NGS has been successfully applied to samples such as urine, blood, and synovial fluid. However, there is no data for continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) fluid. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical usefulness of microbiome analysis of CAPD fluids for the diagnosis of CAPD peritonitis. Methods: We included 21 patients with high suspicion of CAPD peritonitis. Routine CAPD fluid culture was performed using a pellet of 50 mL CAPD fluid onto the chocolate and blood agar for two days, and thioglycollate broth for one week. 16S rRNA gene-targeted NGS of pellets, stored at -70°C was performed with MiSeq (Illumina, USA). Results: Many colonized or pathogenic bacteria were detected from CAPD fluids using NGS and the microbiomes were composed of 1 to 29 genera with a cut-off 1.0. Compared to the culture results, NGS detected the same pathogens in 6 of 18 valid results (three samples failed with low read count). Additionally, using NGS, anaerobes such as Bacteroides spp. and Prevotella spp. were detected in six patients. In two of five samples in which no bacterial growth was detected, possible pathogens were detected by NGS. Conclusion: To our knowledge, this is the first report about the application of 16S rRNA genetargeted NGS for diagnosis of CAPD peritonitis. Etiology of culture-negative CAPD peritonitis can be better defined in NGS. Furthermore, it also helped the detection of anaerobic bacteria.
