Field experiments were conducted to investigate rice - Echinochloa crus-galli and rice - Eleocharis kuroguwai competition under transplanted rice cultivation in four major rice production areas; Suwon, Daejeon, Iksan, and Naju in Korea. Rice yield data were used to predict rice yield as a function of plant densities of E. crus-galli and E. kuroguwai using a rectangular hyperbola and to determine economic threshold (ET) levels of the weeds. Both weed species significantly reduced number of tillers at early rice growth stage, resulting in significant reduction in number of spikes, and the other yield components such as number of grains, maturity and 1,000-grain weight at later growth stage. The weed competitivity represented by parameter βranged from 0.0145 to 0.0346 for E. crus-galli and from 0.0037 to 0.0187 for E. kuroguwai, indicating that the competition effect of E. crus-galli on rice yield was slightly greater than that of E. kuroguwai. The ET values of E. crus-galli were between 0.298 and 1.078 plants m-², while those of E. kuroguwai were between 0.848 and 5.298 plants m-², depending on weed competitivity and herbicide price. Therefore, our results can be used to support decision-making on herbicide application for E. crus-galli and E. kuroguwai management in transplanted rice cultivation.

Compared with the first North Korean nuclear crisis in the mid-1990s, the second North Korean nuclear crisis of the early 2000s reveals very different features. The second crisis led to dialogues on how to manage a regional security issue. Moreover, the crisis underwent three diverse phases that can be used to test the assumptions behind three models of security studies: hegemony, concert of powers, and collective security. This analysis of the North Korean case demonstrates ways of organizing regional security in Northeast Asia in the post–Cold War era and thus examines whether certain historical phases of the second North Korean nuclear crisis can be categorized into and explained by these different security models.

Akebiae Caulis, ‘Mu`to¯ng’ in Chinese, refers tothe stem of Akebia quinata in the Korean modern pharmacopoeia. The stems of Aristolochia manshuriensis andClematis armandii have also been traditionally used forclinical purposes, and are often marketed as ‘Mu`to¯ng’under the names ‘Gua¯n-Mu`to¯ng and Chua¯n-Mu`to¯ng’,respectively. Furthermore, due to the morphological similarityof the herbal medicines, their correct identification bytraditional subjective methods is difficult. Therefore, todevelop a reliable method for discriminating these threeherbal medicines, we applied the tools of moleculargenetics, including random amplified polymorphic DNA(RAPD) and sequence characterized amplified region(SCAR) marker development using samples of Akebiaquinata, Akebia trifoliata, Aristolochia manshuriensis, andClematis armandii. By comparative analysis of RAPDpolymorphisms, we identified several potential PCR productsthat can be used to distinguish the herbal materials ofeach species. Using these RAPD products, we developedunique sequence characterized amplified region (SCAR)markers for determination of the species of plant materials;the products were 590 bp for A. quinata, 300 bp for A. trifoliata, 373 bp for A. manshuriensis, and 432 bp for C. armandii. Furthermore, we optimized SCAR markers forsimultaneous discrimination of the four species by multiplex-PCR. These markers allow efficient identification ofclosely related herbal medicines originating from Akebia,Aristolochia, and Clematis species, and have potential usesin preventing the distribution of adulterants, as they can beused to identify each species and distinguish them frominauthentic substitutes.

The authors analyzed 52 patients with traumatic cervical fracture and distocation admitted to the department of neurosurgery, Gyeongsang National university Hospital between July, 1989 and December, 1993. The most common age group was 21-30 years old, and 46 were male. The most frequent cause of injury was motor vehicle accident. High cervical injuries were 11 cases and mid-low cervical injuries were 41 cases. 34 cases had surgical intervention by anterior approach with bone graft only(5), anterior approach with bone graft and instrumentation(9), posterior approach with wiring and bone graft(18) and total laminectomy(2). The others had conservative treatment and immobilized by traction(9), Halo-vest(8) or neck collar(1) The average period of immobilization of conservatively treated patients was 9.7 weeks , anterior approach without instrumentation was 9 weeks and posterior approach was 5.4 weeks, but patients who treated by anterior approach with instrumentation keep soft collar only. At final follow-up, no significant differences were noted between surgically and conservatively treated group but initial neurologic state correlates with prognosis, independent of modality of treatment. Thus the surgical intervention does not significantly influence the prognosis of the patient but shortens the duration of postoperative immobilization.
DNA 바코드 및 유전자은행 정보 분석을 통한 환제(丸劑)의 구성약재 감별

The herbal pill is usually made into several kinds of herbal medicines and supplementary excipients, such as starch, wheat flour, and honey. However, the verification of correct constituents of herbal pill is very difficult because it is composed of powders mixed with diverse herbal medicines. To determine the material composition of an unknown herbal pill, we analyzed DNA barcode sequences and NCBI GenBank nucleotide database on trial. Among the several DNA barcodes, nuclear ribosomal RNA gene internal transcribed spacer 2 region (ITS2) amplified sufficient PCR products to analyze the nucleotide sequences and provided valuable informations to determine the constituents of herbal pill on GenBank blast search. These valuable information is enough to estimate approximately the main herbal medicines as well as excipients. Therefore, we suggest DNA barcode sequence analysis depending on the GenBank database as a tool of quality control method with chemical analysis for herbal pills.
