        It is difficult to combine oriental and western medicine. Each medicine has a different academic background, perspective on the world, and studying methodology. The claim that two paradigms can not be combined is not obtained from an actual verification, but this means it is so hard to combine two medicines having different backgrounds. The amalgamation of oriental and western medicine should be phased in on the basis of the continuous reciprocal understanding and commitment. First, the strength and weakness of each medicine over the treatment and research are required to be identified. Then, a few complementary areas can be chosen enabling a trial of fusion on a small scale. A cycle of problem solving and a new research can be set by analyzing research results obtained through the implementation over a period of time. In other words, the researchers of oriental and western medicine should repeat a continuous and gradual complementary research process by identifying issues to be improved and complemented through a consensus. Once the methodology obtained through the process of problem solving and proficient implementation is established in a stable condition, a method to widen the fusion area by expanding the operating area and implementation method can be chosen. However, the integral system of oriental medicine shouldn't be substituted by mechanical idea or reductionism. What should be done primarily for oriental medicine is to objectify things through quantification. In particular, the oriental treatment should accept the microscopic diagnosis to determine the structure and observe the biochemical change.

      • 흰쥐의 중대뇌동맥 결찰로 유발된 뇌허혈에서 양격산화탕(凉膈散火湯)이 신경세포에 미치는 효과

        Objectives : Yanggyuksanhwa-tang is a prescription used for cerebral infarction clinically. Methods : According to previous research data, the effect of Yanggyuksanhwa-tang on cerebral infarction, we induced cerebral infarction by middle cerebral artery occlusion(MCAO) in rats, and the rats were administered Yanggyuksanhwa-tang. Results: Infarct area, infarct volume were measured, and the level of elements such as c-Fos, Bax and caspase-3 in penumbra of infarct were expressed by immunohistochemical staining. Conclusion : Yanggyuksanhwa-tang showed neuroprotective effect through preventing neuronal cell apoptosis.

        Ataxia and vertigo are frequent clinical findings in cerebellar infarction patients. In severe cases, they cannot achieve normal activity in daily life. A 65-year-old man was admitted with ataxia and vertigo diagnosed as acute cerebellar infarction. We prescribed for Chukdam-tang to treat the phlegm disease. After this treatment, ataxia and vertigo improved. We suggest Chukdam-tang is significantly effective on the treatment of cerebellar infarction.

        오미자(五味子)(Fructus Schisandrae)가 흰쥐 해마신경세포의 저산소증 모델에서 세포사에 미치는 영향

        Objectives : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of FS for the modulation of ROS and MMP in a hypoxic model of cultured rat cortical cells. Methods : For the effect of FS on the viability, FS was added to culture media (neurobasal supplemented with B27) and cell viability was measured by LDH assay. To investigate the effects of FS on ROS generation and MMP preservation, cells grown in FS-containing media were given a hypoxic shock(2% $O_2/5%$ $CO_2$, $37^{\circ}C$, 3 hrs) on DIV 10, stained with $H_2DCF-DA$(10 nM) and JC-1, respectively, and observed by fluorescent microscope. Results : 1. FS has a protective effect of cortical cells in both normoxia and hypoxia. 2. FS reduced the generation of ROS and this reduction was especially significant at 3 days after hypoxia. 3. FS was effective for the maintenance of MMP in hypoxia, and this efficacy was especially significant at 3 days after hypoxia. Conclusions : Taken together, these results indicate that FS attenuates ROS generation and MMP dissipation, which eventually protects from neuronal cell death in hypoxia.

        고혈압(高血壓) 및 고지혈증(高脂血症)에 대(對)한 청열도담탕(淸熱導痰湯)의 실험적(實驗的) 연구(硏究)

        Mahwangsan is used in the treatment of asthma due to wind and cold(風寒喘). This is study was carried out to investigate the effect of Mahwangsan extract and In order to investigate the effects of Chungyeuldodamtang experimental studies were performed in hyperlipidemia Rats induced by cholesterol and Spontaneusly hypertension rats. The contents of serum total cholesterol, triglyceride, phospholipid and FFA and the changes of blood pressure and heart beat were measured. The results were summarized as follows ; 1. The content of Total-Cholesterol in the serum compared with control group tended to be decreased in Chungyeuldodamtang group, but did not show a significance. 2. The content of Triglyceride in the serum was significantly decreased in Chungyeuldodamtang group. 3. The content of Phospholipid in the serum was significantly decreased in Chungyeuldodamtang group. 4. The content of FFA in the serum tended to decreased in Chungyeuldodamtang group, but did not show a significance. 5. The S.H.R's blood pressure was significantly decreased in Chungyeuldodamtang group. 6. The S.H.R.'s Heart beat compared with control group tended to be decreased in Chungyeuldodamtang group, but did not show a significance. According to the above results, it is assumed that Chungyeuldodamtang has a valid effect on Hypertension and Hyperlipidemia.

        Objectives : This cliniclal study was to evaluate the effect of Cheongsangsahwatang (淸上瀉火湯) treatment on the headache after subdural hemorrhage. Methods : We treated two patients who have headache after subdural hemorrhage by oriental medical therapy, specially Cheongsangsahwatang (淸上瀉火湯). We used VAS(Visual Analog Scale) to investigate the effect of oriental medical therapy, specially Cheongsangsahwatang (淸上瀉火湯). Reasults : After prescription of Cheongsangsahwatang (淸上瀉火湯), VAS scores on headache and accompanying symptoms decreased. Conclusions : This study suggests that Cheongsangsahwatang (淸上瀉火湯) is effective in the treatment of headache after subdural hemorrhage.

        백하수오(白何首烏)의 항산화활성(抗酸化活性)과 amino acid의 분포(分布)에 관한 실험적(實驗的) 연구(硏究)

        The aim of the presents study is to investigate and compare the antioxidative effects and qualities of the cultivating root of Cynanchum Wilfori, which is increasingly used in recent days, with those of the wilding root, which has mainly been used in the past in oriental medicine for a tonic and also for prevention and treatment of various geriatric diseases including aging progress. For comparison of their antioxidative effects, the activities of the total extracts on lipid peroxidation and the activity of aldehyde oxidase(EC 1.2.3.1) as well as xanthine oxidase(EC 1.2.3.2) were investigated in vitro. In addition, their inhibitory effects on the activity of 5-lipoxygenase, which is known to induce inflammation and concerned with free radicals, were also determined in vitro. Furthermore, the amino acid contents of both roots were analyzed in order to compare their qualities. The results are as follows: 1. The wilding root inhibited significantly the activity of 5-lipoxygenase, showing five times more portent than the cultivating root. 2. Both of the wilding root and the cultivating root inhibited aldehyde oxidase activity in a dose-dependant manner. The wilding root was more effective than the other. 3. Both of the wilding root and the cultivating root dose-dependently suppressed lipid peroxidation in rat brain, kidney, and liver. 4. The anti-peroxidative effects of both roots appeared to be most strong in brain and least in liver. In particular, the cultivating root exhibited a significant inhibition on brain lipid peroxidation. 5. The cultivating root contained 15 amino acids including five essential amino acids in contrast with the less contents in the wilding root.

        치매(痴呆)에 관(關)한 동서의학적(東西醫學的) 비교(比較) 고찰(考察)

        This study was done in order to investigate the etiology and pathology of dementia in the variety literature. Dementia in elderly persons(above the age of 60) mainly classfied Alzheimer disease and Cerebral vascular dementia. The results were as follows: 1. Dementia patients have abnormal mental function, who have no mental weakness but defects of memory, verbal disturbance, behavior disturbance and loss of intellectual function. 2. Dementia regard as 'me-beng(?病)', 'jeon-gwang(癲狂)', and 'heo-ro(虛勞)' in oriental medicine and the symptom is a silence with no response, mixing, a crying or a laugh, a stranger behavior and a amnesia; disturbances of speech, emotion, behavior. 3. Dementia caused by Alzheimer disease, Multi infarct dementia, Parkinson's disease, sequelae of acute CO poisoning, head injury and alcoholism(occidental medically) and the 'Dam(痰) and Damhwa(痰火), weakness of heart and spleen(心脾虛) caused by pent up anger of seven emotions(七情鬱結), the weakness of liver and kidney(肝腎不足)(oriental medically). 4. The causes of Alzheimer disease are various; a heredity factor, a morphological factor of brain tissues, a psychological factor and a biochemical factor (occidental medically) ; the 'Dam(痰) and Damhwa(痰火) caused by weakness of the internal organs and disturbance of the emotions(oriental medically). 5. Cerebral vascular dementia caused by loss of the certain cerebral neurons and oriental medically caused by obstruction of 'dam(痰)' or 'eo heul(瘀血)'. It is recommended that further study of many sided investigations, specially against a weakness of spiritual functions and a certain neurotoxin in the future.

        배양한 흰쥐 대뇌세포의 저산소증 모델에서 황금(黃芩)이 유전자 표현에 미치는 영향

        Objectives : The purpose of this investigation is to evaluate the effects of Scutellaria baicalensis GEORGI on alteration in gene expression in a hypoxia model using cultured rat cortical cells. Methods : E18 rat cortical cells were grown in a Neurobasal medium containing B27 supplement. On 12 DIV, Scutellaria baicalensis GEORGI(20 ug/ml) was added to the culture media and left for 24 hrs. On 11 DIV, cells were given a hypoxic insult $(2%\;O_2/5%\;CO_2,\;37^{\circ}C,\;3\;hrs)$, returned to normoxia and cultured for another 24 hrs. Total RNA was prepared from Scutellaria baicalensis GEORGI-untreated (control) and -treated cultures and alteration in gene expression was analysed by microarray using rat 5K-TwinChips. Results : For most of the genes altered in expression, the Global M values were between -0.5 to +0.5. Among these, 1143 genes increased in their expression by more than Global M +0.1, while 1161 genes decreased by more than Global M -0.1. Effects on some of the genes whose functions are implicated in neural viability are as follows: 1) The expression of apoptosis-related genes such as Bad (Global M = 0.39), programmed cell death-2(Pdcd2) (Global M = 0.20) increased, while Purinergic receptor P2X(P2rxl) Global M = -0.22), Bc12-like1(Bc1211)(Global M = -0.19) decreased. 2) The expression of 'response to stress-related genes such as antioxidation-related AMP-activated protein kinase subunit gamma 1 gene (Prkag1) (Global M = 0.14), catalase gene (Global M = 0.14) and Heme Oxygenase(Hmoxl) increased. 3) The expression of Fos like antigen 2 (Fos12) expressed in neurons that survive ischemic insult increased (Global M = 0.97). Conclusions : these data suggest that Scutellaria baicalensis GEORGI increases the expression of antiapoptosis- and antioxidation- related genes in a way that can not yet be explained.
