A Cognitive Account of Asymmetric Conjunction

It has been generally assumed that asymmetric extraction is allowed when the conjuncts can be perceived as expressing a “unitary” event, which renders asymmetric conjunctions systematically immune to Ross’ CSC and the ATB requirement. Yet, the range of semantic relations between the events in asymmetric conjunction is apparently so diverse as to defy a unified semantic account. This paper provides a unique characterization of the event unity along the line of Jo’s (1993, 2007) analysis of serialization: the diverse meaning dependencies (i.e., a causal relation, a causally-involved relation, or a figure-ground relation) that give rise to the perception of unity of the coordinated events are all analyzed as instances of underlyingly the same relation, namely counterfactual dependency. The counterfactual dependency can be safely taken to represent the sense of “inseparable connection” between events that are perceived as forming a complex unitary event. (Sunmoon University)

The Serial Verb Construction and Constructional Polysemy

Studies of the SVC have been plagued by the annoying fact that the interpretations of SVCs are apparently so diverse as to defy a unified semantic account of serialization. Thus, in most studies, the apparent heterogeneity of the interpretations of SVCs has led to fragmentation of serialization into a variety of subtypes, merely in terms of stereotypical examples, with no provision to capture the underling unity of the subtypes. This paper, along with Jo (1993), argues against such fragmentation and provides a unified semantic analysis of serialization. The sense of inseparable connection between the events serialized is attributed to the counterfactual dependency between them. And the variety of meaning dependencies of the SVC are accommodated as particular instances of the counterfactual dependency, arising from the interaction between the unique underspecified semantics of serialization and the semantic and pragmatic aspects of the events serialized. This analysis, in line with the selective generation analysis of lexical polysemy, provides a principled account for the time-honored native speakers’ intuition that SVCs express a single, perhaps complex, event rather than a series of distinct events.

A Pronunciation Analysis of an African American Speaker - A Case Study

  This study is an attempt to make a detailed description of the pronunciation features of an African American speaker from Cleveland, Ohio in the U.S.A. Most of the description is devoted to the pronunciation features of the subject"s speech even though some lexical and grammatical aspects will also be noted. The present study shows that despite some apparent pronunciation differences, the subject"s speech and the Standard American English share essentially the same underlying phonemic inventories. Even though no systematic attempt to associate it with any given social or regional dialect is made, the subject"s speech is assumed to belong to the Great Lakes Dialects. The subject"s speech was observed to exhibit some influence of the Northern Cities Shift, a chain vowel shift observed in the Great Lakes Dialects, yet, the influence was sporadic lexically: the vowel shift was not complete enough to posit an altered phonemic system for his speech. Granting this, even the limited findings of the present study imply that the subject"s speech does indeed exhibit influence of the on-going sound change in the region and makes an excellent material for further study of the gradual sociolinguistic sound change.

EFL 대학 작문 수업에서 기계번역 활용의 학습 효과

This study is an attempt to prove the utility of machine translation(MT) in developing foreign language writing competence of EFL college students. The focus of previous studies was only on the quality of MT itself or the quality of the MT-aided writing, not on whether the systematic use of MT indeed improves the learners’ general English writing ability. In the writing class for this study, 17 students were taught how to effectively utilize MT and asked to actively use MT in English writing practices over 10 weeks. A qualitative comparison of the learners’ direct writings conducted before and after the 10 weeks of training confirmed that the use of MT helped improve learners’ general English writing skills. However, the learner’s improvement in writing skills exhibited no significant correlation with his English proficiency, nor with the increase in his writing confidence. This result implies that the success or failure of the class may depend more on the degree of reflective learning on the part of the student than on such fixed factors as the student’s proficiency and the use of MT.

필리핀 영어연수의 교육적 가치와 개선방안

The micro classes, such as 1:1 and 1:4 classes, in the Philippines are expected to significantly increase the learner’s opportunities to use English, unmatched by the local EFL environment as well as the western ESL environment. However, it was observed that the language gains from the Philippines were insignificant or not as expected, compared to the students’ self-declared confidence. Three reasons were observed why the training in Philippine is not fulfilling expectations. First, Philippine teachers lack expertise in foreign language education. Second, students do not have enough basic language skills to make the most of 1:1 lessons. Third, excessive amount of classes and lack of self-directed learning lower the learning effect. Three improvement plans are suggested. First, On-the-job training should be offered to increase the teaching capacity of the instructors. Second, Pre-departure programs should be strengthened so that students can acquire sufficient basic language skills before starting study abroad. Third, it is necessary to reduce the excessive class hours of Philippine training and to allow self-study time as part of the regular curriculum for students.

매일 아침 옷 매칭에 어려움을 겪는 사람들에게 지원하기 위한 서비스이다. 본 시스템은 자신이 가지고 있는 옷을 등록하고 등록된 옷을 토대로 상 하의를 추천한다. 옷장 바로 옆에 위치하고 있어 추천과 동시에 옷을 입어볼 수 있다는 장점이 있으며, 앱을 통해서도 추천이 가능하다. 이를 토대로 많은 사람들에게 시간 단축 및 다양한 패션 시도를 유도하는 효과를 기대할 수 있다.

초기 성인의 자기대상경험과 건강한 자기애의 관계에서 공감지각과 자기위로능력의 매개효과

목적 본 연구는 초기 성인을 대상으로 자기대상경험과 건강한 자기애와의 관계에서 공감지각과 자기위로능력의 구조적인 관계를 탐색하고 각 변인들이 어떤 경로를 거쳐 건강한 자기애를 형성하는지 살펴보고자 하였다. 방법 이를 위해 전국의 19세 이상 39세 이하의 성인을 대상으로 온라인 설문을 실시하였으며 총 533명(남 233명, 여 300명)의 자료를 분석하였다. 각 변인들 간의 관계를 추정하기 위해 SPSS 25와 MPLUS 8.6(Muthén & Muthén, 1998-2014)을 활용하여 기술통계분석, 상관분석, 구조방정식 모델링을 사용하여 매개효과를 분석하였다. 결과 본 연구의 주요 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 자기대상경험, 건강한 자기애, 공감지각, 자기위로능력 변인 간에 모두 유의미한 정적상관이 있는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 자기대상경험과 건강한 자기애와의 관계에서 공감지각은 매개효과가 없었다. 셋째, 자기대상경험과 건강한 자기애와의 관계에서 자기위로능력은 부분매개효과가 있었다. 넷째, 자기대상경험과 건강한 자기애와의 관계에서 공감지각의 단일매개효과는 없었으나 자기대상경험이 공감지각과 자기위로능력을 순차적으로 이중매개하여 건강한 자기애에 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 결론 본 연구는 Kohut의 자기심리학 관점에서 볼 때, 자기대상경험과 건강한 자기애와의 관계에서 공감지각 및 자기위로능력이 과정 변인으로서 역할을 한다는 것을 경험적으로 확인하였다. 따라서 건강한 자기애를 형성하기 위해 교육현장, 직장, 상담 등 다양한 장면에서 자기 및 자기대상에게 개입해야 할 방향과 교육자료 및 프로그램 제공의 필요성을 확인하였다. Objectives The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between young adults’ self-object experience and healthy narcissism, the structural relationship between empathy perception and self-soothing that was explored, and which paths each variable formed healthy narcissism through. Methods For this purpose, an online survey was conducted on adults aged 19 to 39 across the country, and data of a total from 533 people (233 men and 300 women) were analyzed. Descriptive statistical analysis, correlation analysis, and mediating effect analysis were conducted using SPSS 25 and MPLUS 8.6 (Muthén & Mutén, 1998-2014) to estimate the relationship between each variable. Results The results of the study are as follows. First, positive correlations between self-empathy, healthy narcissism, empathy perception, and self-soothing ability were all significant. Second, there was no significant mediation effect of empathy perception on the relationship between self-object experience and healthy narcissism. Third, there was a significant mediation effect of self-soothing ability on the relationship between self-object experience and health narcissism. Fourth, the single mediation effect of empathy perception on the relationship between self-object experience and healthy narcissism was found insignificant, however, sequential double mediation of self-object experience through empathy perception and self-soothing ability on healthy narcissism was significant. Conclusions Based on Kohut’s self psychology, these results suggest that empathy perception and self-soothing ability play the role of procedural variables in the relationship between self-object experience and healthy narcissism. Therefore, in order to form healthy narcissism, the direction to intervene in various scenes such as education site, workplace, and counseling, and the need to provide educational materials and programs were confirmed.
