<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The existing deformation-induced martensitic transformation mostly focuses on overcoming the trade-off of cryogenic strength-ductility; however, an enhancement of cryogenic strength further is still challenging. We present a concept to yield a cryogenic strength of 2 GPa in a duplex V<SUB>10</SUB>Cr<SUB>10</SUB>Co<SUB>30</SUB>Fe<SUB>50</SUB> alloy. We adopt a thermodynamic calculation to reduce the stability of metastable face-centered-cubic (FCC) matrix, significantly promoting the martensitic transformation. In conjunction with the chemically driven promotion, the duplex structure including athermal body-centered-cubic (BCC) martensite enables mechanical strain partitioning to accelerate the transformation further. This finding could be an appropriate design strategy to develop new ultrastrong alloys for cryogenic applications.</P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>
Anti-Biofilm Effects of Torilis japonica Ethanol Extracts against Staphylococcus aureus

The spread of antibiotic-resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus, a gram-positive opportunistic pathogen, has increased due to the frequent use of antibiotics. Inhibition of the quorum-sensing systems of biofilm-producing strains using plant extracts represents an efficient approach for controlling infections. Torilis japonica is a medicinal herb showing various bioactivities; however, no studies have reported the anti-biofilm effects of T. japonica extracts against drug-resistant S. aureus. In this study, we evaluated the inhibitory effects of T. japonica ethanol extract (TJE) on biofilm production in methicillin-sensitive S. aureus (MSSA) KCTC 1927, methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) KCCM 40510, and MRSA KCCM 40511. Biofilm assays showed that TJE could inhibit biofilm formation in all strains. Furthermore, the hemolysis of sheep blood was found to be reduced when the strains were treated with TJE. The mRNA expression of agrA, sarA, icaA, hla, and RNAIII was evaluated using reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction to determine the effect of TJE on the regulation of genes encoding quorum sensing-related virulence factors in MSSA and MRSA. The expression of hla reduced in a concentration-dependent manner upon treatment with TJE. Moreover, the expression levels of other genes were significantly reduced compared to those in the control group. In conclusion, TJE can suppress biofilm formation and virulence factor-related gene expression in MSSA and MRSA strains. The extract may therefore be used to develop treatments for infections caused by antibiotic-resistant S. aureus.

Purpose : This study was performed to evaluate changes in Achilles tendon (AT) characteristics of asymptomatic tendons in patients with acute AT ruptures on the contralateral side by using ultrasonography. M ethods: From January 2016 to December 2018, 31 patients were enrolled. The contralateral asymptomatic ATs were assessed: (1) fluid collection of paratenon, (2) echogenicity, and (3) thickness. The ATs were divided into the distal, middle, and proximal thirds for evaluation and were assessed before the surgery, as well as at 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months after the surgery. At each time, pain in the tendons was recorded. Results: In all cases, it was observed that there was a hypoechoic lesion or fluid collection of the paratenon, which did not show a significant change over time. There was no significant difference in tendon thickness according to the period in the distal and proximal areas, and significant differences were observed only in the middle area (p< 0.05). A new pain around the tendon occurred most often at 6 weeks after surgery (eight cases of 31 cases, 25.8%). Eight cases of pain (47.1%) remained at 12 months after surgery. Conclusion: In patients with acute AT rupture, ultrasonographic hypoechoic lesions or fluid collections of the paratenon were initially observed on the contralateral tendon, but this did not show significant changes over time. A significant change in tendon thickness was observed in the middle area, but this did not show a close association with pain
Effect of Korean red ginseng marc fermented by Bacillus subtilis on swine immunity

Red ginseng marc is a by-product of Korean red ginseng (panax ginseng CA Meyer) and contains ginsenoside which has pharmacological effects. The Korean red ginseng marc was fermented with Bacillus subtilis (RGMB). This study was carried out to investigate the RGMB effect on swine immunity. The variation of ginsenoside depending on the RGMB fermentation time was analyzed. Swine (Landrace${\times}$Yorkshire) were divided into control group (basic diet) and RGMB group (RGMB 1% diet). One percent RGMB was fed to the RGMB group for 28 days. The biochemical parameters, cytokine and immunoglobulin were analyzed. For 48 hours of fermentation on RGMB, ginsenoside Rb1 had increased 180.94%, Rg3 235.85%. Rg1 wasn't detected before fermentation, but was detected after 48 hours of fermentation. The RGMB had effect of deceasing initial AST concentration $79.33{\pm}12.85U/L$ to $54.00{\pm}14.46U/L$ in final and was significantly lower (P<0.05) than control in final. In final RGMB had significantly lower (P<0.05) ALT concentration of $48.57{\pm}8.26U/L$ comparing with control group of $65.43{\pm}10.31U/L$. RGMB had the effect of significantly decreasing (P<0.05) $IL-1{\beta}$, IL-6 and $TNF-{\alpha}$ concentration of $2.44{\pm}1.31ng/mL$, $0.71{\pm}0.36ng/mL$ and $0.51{\pm}0.21ng/mL$. The IgA concentration had significantly increased (P<0.05) in RGMB group of $0.56{\pm}0.06mg/mL$ in final. These results demonstrate that RGMB has effect of increasing immunity and practicable to use as feed additives on swine.

화석연료의 점진적인 고갈과 그 사용에 따라 발생하는 환경오염 문제의 해결 및 에너지 안보 차원에서 세계 각국은 수소경제로의 이동을 준비 중이며 현재 기술개발을 통해 상업화의 시기를 앞당기는 노력을 하고 있다. 국내에서는 2003년부터 본격적으로 정부 주도의 기술개발 및 실용화 사업을 추진하고 있으며 민간 부문에서는 국내 대기업들을 위주로 해외 전문업체와의 제휴를 통해 차세대 수종 사업으로 수소 연료전치 기술개발을 추진 중이나, 아직까지 기술력이 세계수준에는 이르지 못하고 있는 실정이다. SK는 산업자원부와 에너지관리공단에서 주관하는 대체에너지 기술개발 사업 중 수소연료전지 분야의 '수소스테이션(Hydrogen Station) 국산화 기술개발' 사업의 주관 기관으로서, 독자 기술로 개발한 수소 발생 장치를 중심으로 하여 2007년 수소스테이션 건설을 목표로 연구를 수행하고 있다. 수소스테이션 국산화 기술 개발은 2004년부터 2009년까지 총 5년간에 걸쳐 진행되며, 주관 연구기관인 SK는 수소 발생 장치의 개발과 이를 중심으로 한 수소스테이션의 건설을 총괄하고 있으며, 3개 국책 연구 기관 및 4개 대학이 위탁연구 기관으로 참여하여, 수소 생산 신공정 개발, 촉매 개발, PSA개발 및 탈항 기술 개발 등에 대한 요소 기술의 국산화를 목표로 연구를 진행하고 있다. 본 고에는 2004년부터 현재까지의 주요 연구 결과 및 수소스테이션 건설 추진 현황을 소개하고자 한다.

<P>Graphene/carbon nanotube (CNT) junction barrier height was investigated using all-carbon field-effect transistor structure with graphene and single-walled CNT (SWCNT) network as source (S)/drain (D)/gate electrodes and as channel, respectively. SWCNT network channel was formed by dielectricphoresis process at the prepatterned graphene S/D electrodes. By analyzing the measured current-voltage characteristics by the diode circuit model, the Schottky barrier height at the graphene and CNT junction was found to be approximately 0.5 eV.</P>
