高麗時代 騈儷文 硏究 : 『東人之文四六』과 『東文選』을 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본고는 『東人之文四六』과 『東文選』을 통하여 高麗時代 騈儷文의 형식적 특징과 내용적 특징을 유기적으로 분석하고 한문 글쓰기에서의 역할과 글쓰기로서의 특징 등을 밝히는 데에 목적이 있다.
고려시대는 변려문에 있어 최고의 전성기라 할 수 있다. 많은 名賢들이 변려문을 작성하였고, 고려 후기에는 崔滋가 『補閑集』 내에서 문인들의 변려문에 대하여 評을 달기도 하였다. 또한 고려 말에는 崔瀣가 변려문집인 『東人之文四六』을 편찬하였는데, 그 안에 수록된 변려문의 종류는 17종에 달한다. 고려 때 전성기를 맞았던 변려문은 중국의 고문부흥운동에 영향을 받아 점차 쇠퇴하였지만, 朝鮮時代에도 공문서를 제작할 때에는 여전히 변려문을 활용하였다. 그러므로 고려시대 변려문은 조선의 대표 詩文選集인 『東文選』에도 수록되어 조선의 文人들에게 변려문의 典範으로서 영향을 끼쳤다.
변려문은 對偶가 기본 요건이며, 4자 또는 6자의 구절들이 주로 나열된다. 또한 다양한 典故가 활용되며 평측의 규칙이 있다. 문인들은 대우로 이루어진 4자나 6자의 구절들을 통하여 독자에게 자신의 심정을 완곡하게 전달할 수 있었다. 또한 전고의 활용은 상황을 객관화시켜 이해를 촉진시키고 설득력을 높였다. 추가로 평측의 규칙까지 따르게 되면 문장에 리듬감을 한층 더해주어 무엇보다 글을 용이하게 읽도록 할 수가 있었다. 이러한 장점을 지닌 변려문은 고려시대에 국내와 외교에서 활발히 활용되었다. 국왕에게는 통치 수단이 되어 태자나 신하들을 엄숙히 敎諭하는 데에 사용되었고, 신하들에게는 국왕을 향한 言路로써 국왕과의 원활한 소통을 가능하게 하였다. 또한 연회의 장에서 흥취를 돋우는 용도로도 화려한 변려문이 쓰였다. 뿐만 아니라, 윗사람에게 절실히 自薦을 하거나 벗들과 돈독히 우호를 다지는 등 사적인 교류를 할 때에도 변려문을 지었다. 한편, 고려는 혼란스러운 동북아시아의 형국 속에 있었기 때문에 국가를 존속하기 위해서는 외교가 중요하였다. 외교문서를 변려문으로 지어가면서 외국의 황제에게 축하나 감사의 뜻을 온전히 전하였고 외국의 불합리한 요구에 맞서 자국의 이익을 굳건히 관철시키기도 하였다.
일각에서는 변려문의 형식적 특징 때문에 변려문이 자신의 의견을 온전히 전달하는 데에 알맞지 않다는 비판이 있어 왔다. 또한 실용문으로 활용되었던 변려문은 다른 장르에 비해 문예미가 드러나지 않는다는 점에서 가치가 떨어지는 것으로도 여겨져 왔다.
그러나 오히려 변려문만의 형식적 특징 덕분에 자신의 의견을 더욱 완곡하게 개진할 수 있었던 면이 분명히 있다. 더불어 고려시대 변려문을 개별적으로 분석해보면 문인들은 변려문의 형식을 따르면서도 자유롭게 저마다의 문예미와 지식을 한껏 드러내고 있다. 나아가 고려의 내로라하는 문인들이 심혈을 기울여가며 지은 변려문은 궁극적으로 국내의 상황을 안정시켰으며 외세로부터 국가를 보전하고 자국의 위상을 드높이기도 하였다. 뿐만 아니라 고려시대 변려문은 구체적인 역사적 사실을 담고 있으며, 그 저변에는 고려 문인들의 자아의식과 대외인식이 깔려있고 다양한 종교·사상이 융화되어 있다. 이렇게 정치·사회적으로 중요한 기능을 하였고 다양한 가치를 지니고 있는 고려시대의 변려문을 개성적 글쓰기라는 하나의 잣대만을 가지고 홀시할 수는 없다. 고려시대 변려문은 진지한 탐구의 대상이 되기에 충분하며, 본고를 통하여 변려문과 고려시대에 관한 연구가 활성화되기를 기대한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper is a research of parallel prose style, or “Byeonryeomun” in Goryeo Dynasty, especially from Donginjimunsaryuk and Dongmunseon. Purpose of this paper is to analyse byeonryeomun by its formal features or content characteristics, and define its role in Chinese literacy.
It can be said that Goryeo Dynasty was a golden age of byeonryeomun, as a lot of famous scholars composed it. In late Goryeo period, Choi Ja left criticism about those byeonryeomuns in his Bohanjip, and Choi Hae compiled those and wrote Donginjimunsaryuk, which contains 17 kinds of byeonryeomuns. This style of writing had prospered in Goryeo Dynasty, but since after Classical Prose Movement from China influenced Goryeo scholars it gradually decreased. However official documents in Joseon Dynasty still used byeonryeomun, and scholar officials too wrote various byeonryeomuns. The representative anthology of Joseon Dynasty, Dongmunseon includes many byeonryeomuns from Goryeo and Early Joseon writers, and this affected scholars throughout Joseon in writing byeonryeomun.
The fundamental condition of byeonryeomun is having contraposition. Mostly four-letter or six-letter are arranged in one line, a variety of classical allusions are used, and tonal pattern is essential. Writers use four or six letter in formational rule to deliver a message more gently. Classical allusions make readers to have objective sight, which let them understand better and sympathize better. Additionally, tonal pattern adds a rhythm between lines which makes it easier to read.
Byeonryeomuns with these characteristic strength are used in domestic politics and foreign diplomacy. Kings used byeonryeomun as a government tool to edify royal family or courtiers, and courtiers used it as communication tool to deliver their voice to the king. In social moments too byeonryeomuns are used, such as in banquets for adding amusements, and in between friends or toward elder to share relationship and sometimes appealing for recommendation.
Especially for Goryeo Dynasty, which were placed in the middle of chaotic state in Northeast Asia, diplomacy was highly essential for survival. Diplomatic letters or literary works are written in byeonryeomun to show gratitude or congratulation, or resist against foreign diplomatic threats.
Some voices raise criticism about byeonryeomun for its formal features disturb its meanings to be fully delivered. Also byeonryeomun is written mostly on practical situations, which lowers its worth as one of literary genre.
However, byeonryeomun’s formal feature rather enable one’s opinion to be delivered more gently. Also, it is found that each byeonryeomun follows the formal features but also expresses its literary aesthetics and abundant knowledge freely. Moreover, byeonryeomuns written by the most famous and best writers in Goryeo eventually settled domestic anxieties, protected foreign diplomatic risks, and raised the country’s status over Northeast Asia. Add to this, byeonryeomun from Goryeo Dynasty contains very detailed historical facts, which is based on self-acknowledgement and foreign perception of Goryeo scholars with confluence of various ideological or religious philosophies.
Byeonryeomun should not be treated just as unique writing only, for it has served major role in political and social situations and is containing numerous values from Goryeo scholars. Thus byeonryeomun in Goryeo Dynasty is worthy enough to be a subject of serious research, and vigorous researches of byeonryeomun and Goryeo literacy is highly anticipated.
